mass buying food can result in food shortage too, the best way is to plant a garden - get rid of your lawn or rent a lot for a garden; a 1/3 of an acre is enough for a family of 4. I've lived thru USSR collapse, so I have seen some harsh times, but the garden really helped.
do you mean drinking water or water for plants?We didn't really have drinking water shortages (fortunately), we only had to deal with a lack of hot water; but during big droughts and insufficient water pressure I had to use well water from a 1/4 mile away to water my plants (I used a canister on a dolly). Same would work for the drinking water.

@POC777 well, it depends on where you live and what you like to eat, so you can find out what actually will grow in your area, get tips from your local farmers. Prepare soil, you can start now by planting garlic, for ex.Make a compost pile - you can use it as an organic fertilizer in a couple of years. Get some basic garden equipment (shovels, tiller, rakes, etc). Plan it. Find out when you plant other veggies in your area (March, May? when it stops to freeze), like potatoes, etc. Good luck!

I live in canada and I am growing vegtables in a spare bedroom that has huge windows. it would suck if the heat in the house went. thats why I have a generator. I also have a mini grocery store stocked with food and two freezers. I grow a garden year round through -40 weather and I make jam and can veg, and meat. I have shown my friend so they can start there own grocery store. water is a huge must! and things to start a fire. also dog food. have dogs.I also have protent drinks and meal replac.

I agree with you also. If people are starving and they find out you have food, that looks pretty bad to them. However, you can sell food on the blackmarket at a reasonable price but that starts the whole mess over again. At first I thought it was that they couldn't keep up with the supply, then when I visited a new just opened Pharmaplus drugstore, it had very little stock...maybe 3 or 4 items of each product. Buy #10 cans of non-hybrid seeds. Hybrid seeds will not produce plants with living seeds. These are GMO terminator seeds, they're dead seed.
Buy a garden tiller.
Store beans, rice wheat & pasta for two years.

Small flowers and strategic roses and such are fine but in an SHTF scenario, a paw paw tree goes farther than a willow. :P
Think long storage nuts like English Walnuts too. Chestnuts and such. Yes, they produce FRUIT. Fruit that you'll have to remove either way.
Should that be too hard for us, then we deserve to go hungry. :P

I agree but,lets think a little bit.If you did store this food up when the bottom does fall out dont you think that there will be people killing one another for food.You would be target #1.Its better to learn gardening skills:soil,harvesting,storingfood,solar advatages and how to get seeds from the vegetables.That way instead of storing food for yourself,you can teach others how to grow food,save seeds,can foods ext,so there is no mass confusion when the time comes. humans will servive.

1 of the rules of 3 = u can survive 3 days w/out H2O, 3 weeks w/out food.
So u need H2O & food storage to tide u over till that garden grows & produces food. Also what happens if the bottom falls out during winter where u cant grow a garden? Again u gotta have H2O & food storage to tide u over.
Of course have seeds & garden too - its a package deal = H2O, food, seeds, etc. If u dont, u have less chance of survival.
BTW if ppl kill for food they have to know u have food to begin w.

I live in canada and I am growing vegtables in a spare bedroom that has huge windows. it would suck if the heat in the house went. thats why I have a generator. I also have a mini grocery store stocked with food and two freezers. I grow a garden year round through -40 weather and I make jam and can veg, and meat. I have shown my friend so they can start there own grocery store. water is a huge must! and things to start a fire. also dog food. have dogs.I also have protent drinks and meal replac.

Congrats, sounds like you have put a lot of thot into your emergency stores. Thats a great way to stay stocked up with the indoor garden & all, but most ppl dont have the luxury of a spare bedroom like you.
As long as you have a plan for the "what if..." scenarios, then you should be good.

I agree with you also. If people are starving and they find out you have food, that looks pretty bad to them. However, you can sell food on the blackmarket at a reasonable price but that starts the whole mess over again. I know many people these days such as divorced or single mothers cannot even afford food for tomorrow, let along stock up for a month or a year. Unfortunately, it will come down to a battle of wills, to either starve and see their kids starve or go to the camps.

every one can afford to save food up. When my husband and I started out we lived in a car. (long storie) but we became knowlageable in shopping. we always bought things that were on sale and when it was on sale we got lots. we learnt how long you can keep frezzer foods what can be frozen what cant. we are still learning gardening (its on going) we can food, dry food and frezze pretty much every thing. pick some thing easy to stock up on. my first stock item was pasta. then canned stuff.

Gold is about 1 to 15 as common as silver, so yes more silver than gold, and copper is a thousand times more common than silver. Gold costs 65 times more than silver. Silver can be used to produce solar electricity, it is the best conductor of all elements, it is the best reflector of all elements, it is the best thermal conductivity (besides diamonds) So in crisis, silver will always be a better element. The thing to do is to link up with local farmers in your area also seek out folks who are in self sustaining households, I moved to Atlanta from Boston to a warmer climate. learn which plants and trees around you are edible and has medicinal properties, stock up on canned goods and water, get yourself a good survival kit with a stove and storm proof matches above all don't panic your great grand parents made it through the depression and you will too, don't fall for the scare tactic just prepare

Perhaps what they are saying is that the cost includes storage also. However, there could be problems down the line with that also. In very extreme economic times some companies, despite their good intentions, just can't stay afloat. Therefore, any advanced purchase of food could be rendered worthless when crisis does eventually hit.

I started noticing a difference in the stocking of shelves almost a year ago. At first I thought it was that they couldn't keep up with the supply, then when I visited a new just opened Pharmaplus drugstore, it had very little stock...maybe 3 or 4 items of each product. I couldn't believe it and the prices seemed up to 25% higher than usual. What companies are also doing is making their packaging smaller with less product and the same or higher price.

Over 40,000 of our 200,000 population is college students, we have several colleges, biggest is Texas Tech, a huge amount of our population is either retired, on disability, or non-working students! We have virtually no industry, almost everything is owned by a rich elite minority, the temp services are over-flowing with people wanting work and not getting work. We have more churches than fast-food joints & most jobs pay $8 or less!!

For everybody that doesn't... have fun in the FEMA food lines. Here in Lubbock Texas (a place where the economy is better than average) there was a line of over 1,000 poor people standing in line at a church to get a box of food, most were turned away. The problem is news channels airing in states like Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, etc are saying Lubbock's economy is booming then they move here and find most of our jobs are in assembling hamburgers for $6.85 an hour!!

I got me a great book on foraging, edible wild plants off amazon. and in it he explains there are edible plants all around us, from nettles to small plants that have roots with bulbs on them that taste better than potatos and most of them are common weeds! better learn how to spot them if your forced to hide and live on the streets. there wont be any bread lines in 2008. You can even eat acorsn if you soak em in water long enough to leech out the acidic tannin lol
