Hagar is a much better singer, but Roth IS Van Halen. To be fair, Hagar joined VH at a time when Eddie's songwriting became generic and his sound was way too processed. A Montrose reunion with the original lineup would be huge.
DLR, Advantages: Better showman, better sense of humor, better vocal quality. Disadvantages: More likely to get drunk, forget lyrics, limited vocal RANGE.
Sammy, Advantages: Great guitar player, broader vocal range, doesn't forget lyrics, more versatile singer i.e., sounds good singing ballads or rockers. Disadvantages: Not as much of a sense of humor as Dave, lesser of a showman--more straightforward, too much falsetto.
Me, I just like Dave better despite the disadvantages.

I've seen both VH with DLR and SH, and personally, I think Sammy took VH to the next level...not just sales wise and concert wise. Because I think Sammy is the better vocalist, especially as age increases. Sammy vs. Dave in Detroit circa 2002-2003 was nothing more than Sammy vs. William Hung (American Idol). Sammy outclassed DLR all the way around.

Vocal battles are better without shitty recordings and a 2 minute lead in. For future reference, try Eagles Fly vs. ummmm, any DLR. DLR is great, but not much range. DLR was a more entertaining frontman for VH, but Van Hagar matured the sound. Hagar is a great entertainer.

His later albums, sounded less and less like VH. But, can you see that for atleast one album, why he would say he was VH?
@newfypearl - Sammy wasn't let go, he left. In 2004 during Van Halen's reunion tour he left because Eddie was drinking himself to death. Sammy left and said that Eddie wasn't the same person anymore. I love both....DLR stuff was great,but come on,by the time we got to the bomb ba dee da crap and then 1984 was ok,but the main songs sold them to even pop fans..Good album,but I will always feel Sammy put them back on the axe kickin track V.H. was meant to do and not that Happy trails stuff that was producing a few hits and I wasn't even digging their whole albums anymore.V.H. from day one was about kickin @ and even a nice touch of pretty woman was far from da chit they should have been kickin!

Vocal battles are better without shitty recordings and a 2 minute lead in. For future reference, try Eagles Fly vs. ummmm, any DLR. DLR is great, but not much range. DLR was a more entertaining frontman for VH, but Van Hagar matured the sound. Hagar is a great entertainer.

But you have to admit listening to Van Halen 5150 (first album without Dave) , and Eat Em' and Smile (Daves first solo LP) ya have to say that the VH sound with Dave was closer to Eat Em' and Smile which only gave Dave more bragging rights at the time. His later albums, sounded less and less like VH. But, can you see that for atleast one album, why he would say he was VH?

@newfypearl - Sammy wasn't let go, he left. In 2004 during Van Halen's reunion tour he left because Eddie was drinking himself to death. Sammy left and said that Eddie wasn't the same person anymore. Of course since then Eddie has cleaned himself up. Just look at the picks from 2004, Eddie looks like Crazy Cat Lady, lol.

Dave had all the swagger and attitude to make Van Halen a legendary band. He injected a lot of humor and fury into those songs, and they are timeless. When I listen to a Van Hagar tune, I think about dozing off from boredom.
