@iamArtish 'desu' basically means "to be." For example, Hatsune Miku desu means "Hatsune Miku I am" (I am Hatsune Miku). Or: sushi ga totemo oishii desu means "sushi very delicious it is" (Sushi is very delicious). It's almost like Yoda Grammar, sorta.

Found out something very very interesting about this song today that few outside japan probably know. I was practicing some Katakana and decided to do some Kanji but the only ones I know are the two for Miku's sirname "Hatsune". It turns out that the alternate reading for those two kanji characters is Hajimete oto. So this song is essentially her signature song since it can be written using the kanji characters for her name.

@Deadeye313 Yes, because "Hatsune Miku" means 'The First Sound of the Future'. Hatsu means first, Ne means sound but the kanji is also read as song, and Miku means future. Simple, right?

Japanese verbs can also be future tense depending on context. The context in the video though is most deffinitely present.

if you fill in for X in the following sentence: X desu. the sentence becomes It is X. It's one of the simplest sentences in Japanese.
