  • I'm a Pleasantville native. I worked at (Roy) Strickland's TV Repair on Main St. in Rye for about a year. Roy was arthritic & lost the ability to really use his hands. Really knew his stuff though. We were an authorized Zenith repair center (I believe).

There was also a glass or hardware store next door. That had to be around '76/'77 maybe?

Wondering if anyone recalls the place. Ol' Roy must've passed away many years ago.

    Great video.

  • @tubengagements Sure, I remember Strickland's. We used to go to Channel One a little further down Rt 1 but I remember seeing Strickland's for years. A green facade. I've been away from Rye long enough to forget exactly where it was but it was part of the "old" Rye, before all the boutiques and chain stores moved in.

  • @tubengagements Cool! I lived in Rye in '77/'78 and was a servant, using the Harrison station. It was an interesting entry to NYC and I liked visiting friends in New Haven. My mother insisted my father not take a job with IBM in the '50s, or I'd have perhaps grown up in Westchester instead of the Rust Belt and Cleveland. Oh, well.

  • im a rye native i grew up on kirby lane in the franzen house and i left rye 6 years ago and im shoked by how much it changed no more a&p the cvs closed now theres cold stone and smotthie king. there are really no more mom and pop buisness its all over priced midtown manhatten style now:( even though it has changed so much i would move back in a heart beat if i could

  • I grew up in Rye on Forest Avenue. Graduated from RHS in 1977 and then moved to California. Fun to watch! Thanks!

  • My mom lived on Oak St. was born there in 1928

  • I lived on Grace Church St from 1985-87...Purchase St. had not yet succumbed to the chain stores...Still a lovely town though

  • I used to be an au pair on 1998, awesome place!

  • @Tati2150 I was a "mother's helper" in Rye from '77-'78. What a fish out of water I was, this Pennsy Dutch gal!

  • I moved from Massachusetts to Rye in October 1988 when I was 20. First time away from home. Great little town. I lived on Florence Ave. A couple rented me a room for $90 bucks a week! That was a steal seeing what a nice neighborhood it was in. I ended up getting homesick and moved back up North. But I will never forget my few short months in Rye!

  • Hello to the guys at carpet trends in rye

  • lipwak-never mind,I looked up your info-you're a lot younger then me.I graduated in 1964.Used to live in the Bradford Park section near the Rye golf course

  • I lived there in the 50's and 60's.The one place I remembered was a dive all the high school kids use to hang out was called "RIPS" which has been gone for some time now.

lipwak-what year did you graduate Rye High from?

  • Do you remember a place called the Five Point? It was a bar on Midland Avenue near the five-way intersection, hence the name. Now it is called Kelly's at Sea Level.

  • I Used to live there in Hix Park

  • rye is beast

  • I Love Rye New York, I lived there back in 88/89 on Orchard ave, loved the town !

  • dude Rye has changed so much in 12 years im serious. Sam Goody Closed down and that CVS near Citibank(which is still standing) has changed to the location whre A&P was. We got a Cold Stone and a Smoothie King and The Imaginarium closed down as well.

  • And has changed even more since I used to live there back in the 60s through the 80s! Only one store of all that you've mentioned, the A&P, was there when I was there. The biggest changes, for me were in the 80s.

I still visit every now and then and it at least SOME of it hasn't changed...

    Cheers,

    Lipwak
