The most unforgiving game of all time. Miscalculate a jump; hit the wrong lever and its game over. SOTB II had amazing graphics for its time and a terrific atmosphere (creepy as hell, even by today’s standards) but the game play was horrendous.
loved this game, grew up with it on the Amiga 500 at a mate's house (as I didn't have one) and played many, many hours back in the late 80's/early 90's
I'm an avid fan of SoTB, having played when I was fairly young, it kind of freaked me out honestly, like when the sorcerer transformed into the bird-creature. I really didn't know what I was seeing or playing, but it was one of the more intense side-scrollers at the time.
I'm glad I got to hear at least another persons thoughts.
@Waxer3929 Same - I remember this from when I was younger and it was one of the first games I ever played. That intro freaked me out and I never really made it past the first screen!
@laffer35 WTF! You make this look so easy. I loved Psygnosis games like Agony for music & gfx but were far too hard so I gave up. Watching SB2 were you point out "if you dont do xyz game is ruined", how did you figure them out ? Did you read magazines 4 tips or play over n over because you didnt have many games or just good at figuring it out ?
I just seen a bit of your Project-X. This game I played lots. I think I only ever got to part 3 about twice ever. You done part 4 ? Thats not human ;)
Retarded. How dare you even think to comment on hard work such as his? His commentary is funny, amazing and it's what makes these videos interesting. It passes on info useful for all of us to know and that couldn't realize back then. I just can't see how such people can go down in the world with their idiotic, awkward requests, like the one from this foolish poor idiot. -.-'
Laffer, on his behalf, I thank you for having bothered to respond to him. I'd have simply deleted him. Huge.
Dude, these videos are just perfection of SOTB :D I watch them all and Wrath of the Demon from start to finish every couple of months. I just love them :D
All this "game is rendered impossible" stuff is quite shocking. Must have been frustrating to play and figure all this out.. But then again, when I was young I was completely absorbed by games like that and invested a huge amount of time to figure them out.
wooops just seen the coments below. Either way poster is a legend in my eyes for being able to master this game! Well done that man, I never stood a chance as a kid
Ah the memories! Never could get more than 10mins into it.. way to damn hard. Wasnt there a cheat where you say something to one of the NPC's and get unlimited lives or something?
Man, I remember playing this with my younger brother on our uncle's amiga. The game was too fucking hard for us, but we always played it because of the intro :)
I completed Beast 1 without cheating or hints, but Beast 2 utterly reduced me to a quivering heap. I couldn't even get past a few minutes of this video WITH an infinite life cheat! Now THAT'S hard :) Games today are so incredibly easy it bores me to tears.
man i remember the cheat to this, you had to walk left and type 'so and so is a fucking legend' or something, the guy i think is the only/first person to complete SOTB1. amazing, so hard
I played this so many hours and finally learned what you did in 9 minutes! I never got further! I remember the dead guy in the net (8:37) and being really creeped out.
omg, i like graphics and music. but i really have to say, the game is way too hard :( I never did it beyond the beginning and the fact that so many little things you omit could render the game impossible is really mean. MAN ! its evil ! You cant save and had to do so many things right. Someone solved this without a solution from a magazine or that cheat leighhobnob mentioned?
Actually, the riddles themselves are great. But trial and error and starting over and over again is evil dude :( :)
Thumbs up, buddy. Q: which version of the game is this? AGA, CD32? I had a 2 disk version, played it on my A600, and I never saw this long version of the intro. This one is so much longer.... Great game, great atmosphere. I often played this one and SotB3 with "7th son of a 7th son" in the background. Screw The Hitman, Doom, MK films, I'd love to see a movie made based on THIS game (and SotB 1&3)....
The reason your intro was shorter might be that you were using a cracked copy... I know they removed parts of the intro to make room for crack intros etc.
Because you need to pay the snail 36 coins in order to be transported back to Karamoon later on in the game... and there are exactly 36 coins in the game.
Oh my....so nostalgic...the music...everything...thx for uploading this...I used to watch my brother playing it,cause I was too small:D I agree with you...it was so cool to play directly from the floppy^^ god I miss those good old days when videogames had this special something....
Also, how did you get the loading times so fast on WinUAE? Because of the great quality of the video that MUST be what you're using, right? Thanks! :)
laffer35, it's me again, I would just like to know how you got the full intro in your copy of Beast 2. The intro video on my copy starts with Aarbron's baby sister crying. :\
Dude, what's your problem? This game is amazing. Of course, that's a matter of opinion, but it is by no means a bad game. The visual styles are eerie, the story is fairly consistent; excluding the kind of bad ending sequence. :P
The music? The music (again, opinion here) is great, especially for an Amiga computer. If you think this game is hard, try other versions of it. The FM Towns Marty version, for example, is much, MUCH easier to complete fairly.
i remember playing this game for the first time when i was 5, my older bro had this as one of his 1st games when he got an amiga 500. the intro of sotb2 would give me nightmares wen i was a kid, especially the lightning and the way the baby wud get snatched lol im grown up now thankfully :-D used get scared i would be snatched while i slept in my bed.........
@retronostalgic There was actually a study done once about how annoying/uncomfortable/unbearable some different sounds were and the cry of babies was at the very top. Above scratching on a blackboard and the sound of someone puking! :D It's human nature.
I remember buying the original Shadow of the Beast for my Amiga back in the day. I had no idea what sort of evil brand of sadistic torture awaited me...
Those games are SOOOOOOO freakin' difficult. I'm impressed with your gamer skillz. Nice job.
damn hard tho i still consider this one of the hardest games ever no lives no save nothing. i sitll got it on genisis bit different tho. ishraun or whatever is easier 2 kill if you rush him. great graphic for the days. awsome skills 2
Some people completed beast 1 quite easily, so the programmers obviously went all out to make this very difficult - they call it value for money and lastability or something. Trouble is they made it way too hard...
How in the flying fuck did anybody even COMPLETE Beast 1, much less QUITE EASILY? My only recollections of that game were a brutal and painfully slow torture from which my tattered psyche will never truly recover, nor translate into images which I can even conjure to my mind's eye at such a late point in my development.
Seriously, if I ever see the developers of that game on the street I'll stab them. In the eyes. With a fountain pen.
I've completed beast 1 although it took a lot of effort and tons of goes but it was still easier than the sequel. Beast 3 finally got the balance right...
Oh my good god. I don't think any youtube video has made me joy quite as hard as this. Do you have a video of the bit which me and my brother called 'attack of the goblins'? (Which is an unfair, since the player was clearly was attacking them, and always during their afternoon nap too.)
I remember my dad playing shadow of the beast, cant remember which one, but he kept getting stuck at a certain part. Running into a trap, and then the character would fall to the bottom of the screen and be stuck forever.
im pretty sure thats the exact bit i always got stuck on, i loved this game, am now looking forward how to over come that part ... and the music .. wow !! :-D
