It seems the more I listen to this song the more I want to listen to it. How ironic that such a warm and gentle soul can emote music in such a powerful and humbling fashion.
Wonder is this song about the walking path in Oxford England, or can it be translated as Addison's (son of adam's) Walk (journey) maybe journey of mankind, or something, I don't know.
@sirjackson5 It's titled after the former. Addison's Walk was a favorite place of C.S. Lewis. Phil is a big fan of Lewis. The song Brother Jack is named for him and the album's name, Beyond Nature, was inspired by Lewis.
C.S. Lewis was inspired, in part, by J.R.R. Tolkien. But only with the Chronicles of Narnia. His theological works, his science fictions stories, and his poetry, he wrote of his own accord. Tolkien had little to do with the vast majority of Lewis' writings, although it was through Tolkien that Lewis became a Christian, which obviously inspired his main body of work. The Narnia series is only a small portion of the immense offering that Lewis made to literature.
Phil's getting quite a bit older now (aren't we all).. I remember around this time he said it was a special place in his life, and that a lot of his best music came from that time. Sort of makes you wish we could pick a place in our lives.. and just stay there for a while longer.
this is a great song it has always had a special place in my heart and musical ear beyond nature is one of the many examples of this mans acoustic genius
Wow, I'm a guitarist and whenever I watch Phil go at it on guitar like this, it takes my confidence down a whole level just because of what the man can do on a guitar haha. But I've always admired how he does that slapping technique that I've seen him do before at about 0:52. If there's anybody that could gove me some tips in how to do something like that, that would be great.
DADF#BD tuned a half step down. T I see you commented on Jesse Wall's version of this here - he plays the full version there. This video and Jesse's should help you out a lot. Also phil has a DVD called "Acoustic guitar style" that has a lesson on this.
I'll be seeing Phil tonight in Wheaton, Il. :) It's always a treat to see this guy perform. It's like having the chance to watch a great artist create a painting or sculpture. You don't often get the chance to observe greatness like this.
Yes he has traditionally done solo acoustic shows for a long time - full band/electric guitar/rock and roll shows are harder to come by. But this one guy with one guitar and all his tricks and talent... might as well be a chorus of guitarists with him. They were actually taping the concert we saw for a dvd so perhaps that'll be available soon!
I like the dove inlays on Phil's Olson (Olson is a small plant in St. Paul). I own a Takamine acoustic with a cedar top. But Phil redefines guitar playing big time!
Nobody should feel bad because phil is this good. See, was doing this sort of thing before he was born, having sat in with a few cherubs here and there. in other words, he's got a head start.
i have never, ever, ever, ever, ever been driven to tears by music before i heard this song. i mean, its not like im sobbing or anything <.< maybe i just got some sand in my eye.... -sniff-
OK I think I learned the beautiful harmonic bit. Actually the tuning is slightly different from what I said. I think its C# A# F C# G# C. Which is drop D for both E strings, and tune the G-string down to an F# then tune everything down half a step and you got it. Its a pain to do but its worth it. The lovely harmonics are played:
220100 as the chord with the left hand and
xx12x12 12 as the harmonic played with the right hand slap. Have fun
I know for sure that 'The Reunion' is in double drop D tuning. I.e., both E strings tuned down to D. You might try that, but I haven't got my guitar on me at the moment. Would love to play this to...it looks like one of the more manageable Keaggy tracks.
! Some more videos from the Keaggy Acoustic Style video? Forsooth! This, and 'County Down' are really very good, but The Reunion remains my favourite...an absolutely incredible video. However, these are very welcome here. Thanks.

Easy to see where so many tap-happy guitarists of today got their inspiration from. Keaggy is often imitated but never duplicated.

it would be interesting to hear him make an album with lyle mays. few musicians could accompany this type of guitar without getting in the way

Song inspired by C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien's friendship if I'm not mistaken?
hence the name: a road they walked near oxford many evenings talking about faith.
MADdwarfWorkshop 2 years ago
C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien knew each other?
flimflam0069 2 years ago
they were best friends. they started a club at oxford called the inklings.
Tolkien brought Lewis into understanding & embracing of the Christian faith.
Its a really cool story, search it up. There's a few good documentaries to.

@flimflam0069
Yup, good friends. C.S. Lewis used to be an Atheist, actually.

yah. C.S. Lewis was inspired to write his books from J.R.R. Tolkien ^.^

I think it's the other way around because c.s. lewis was inspired by God and the bible, not the lord of the rings.
