  • ADOREI!

  • Beautiful, gold and a joy indeed. Great posture too, and his fingering is a performance in itself.

  • i beat gran turismo 3 arcade mode and was so excited. then this song played during the credits..... i almost cried.

  • This was very fine and sensitively played.

  • Imagine this song played when you entered a church where bach performed in the 16th century. It thrills me. How cheap music is made these days but how powerful such a song as this one is. I don't believe in a god but if there is ever to be a spiritual thing in human beings after all, it is all explained in this very song.

  • End of Evangelion (DVD Menu) brought me here. :D

  • Great performance, beautiful layering of the melody, inner voices and bass.

  • My boy bowed three times and then sat back down anyway, true scholar!

  • HIMYM Marshall's and Lily's wedding!

  • Pretty good. Not nearly as good as the Myra Hess performance. Everything about the way Hess plays it is admirable. This performance is just OK.

  • ... what a nice beginning ... but what follows then ?

    - too much sentiment

    - radical tempo changes which are not authorized by the score

    - the melody could be worked out more clearly ...

Sry to say, a little boring and not my taste.

    Listen to Lipatti's version !!

  • @hl2mukkel And what makes you the expert? Huh?

  • Goldstein's a beast.

  • I don't have a phone wooden or not and no t.v. Ilisten to this on the free computers in our public library ( Penzance Cornwall U.K.) and it is beautiful. XXXX

  • The pianist played beautifully. The music warmed our hearts and made us love Jesu Christ even more.

  • very good pianist.

  • Thanks a lot Evangelion, now I'll have nightmares every time I hear this song.

  • this is good.

  • what kind of piano is this?

  • @69nVirgo i am piano illiterate tho i luv it so much

  • @69nVirgo Its a Steinway and Sons Model CD - D is for their 8'11" Model, C stand for Concert Editions.

  • @69nVirgo steinway and sons model D concert grand

  • wonder what he plays next :P

  • truly an amazing performer and the song will always be timeless, I cant imagine playing this from memory this is astounding. So glad youtube has this

  • I played this at a recital (piano) about 30 years ago and I've been trying to polish up since my cable was shut off. All I needed was the first note! Is'nt the internet awesome and music so much better than tv!

  • i never get tired of listening to this.

  • Is there a disco version of this piece?

  • Ah...~

    Music to purify the soul~

  • This is the best I have ever heard this song played by anyone :O Good Job! :D

  • The orchestra members seem under his spell like the youtube viewers.

  • that play is really in bach's way, i feel like that i'm really in church, wonderful!

  • very thoughtfull, almost as good dinu lipatti 's performance of this piece

  • Beautiful.

  • Simply beautiful

  • What's the next piece he played?

  • Fantastic rendition.

  • you can hear that he is loving this piece of music.

    Love it!

  • The performer interprets the work in his own way. The listeners will also appreciate the interpretation to varying degrees. Conductors add their own interpretations to orchestral pieces. The instruments that are played today did not exist centuries ago or have been altered over the years. The music that was written in the time of Bach does not sound the same as it did then. Also there are many more genre than existed years ago. We all don't have to agree on everything. Bravo, Goldstein!

  • @roba12601 well put!!!

  • this is played too slow for my taste...

  • @TheDayne You are so right! I was gonna say the same, then I thought I would have been insulted, but later I saw you thought the same and I agree with you damn, I do

  • @TheDayne I actually like it at this pace. It's soft and gentle, like a lullaby. I like it in the original tempo also, but this one is also nice.

  • "Lady Lynda" by the Beach Boys brought me here.

  • whitest kids you know brought me here

  • Such an inspiring and hypnotic interpretation.

  • his hands move like spiders

  • @nemopanpete

That is what proper finger positioning and technique look like. Getting to the note far before you actually play it...

Not only that but his spider fingers play with such emotion! He's just amazing!

  • This is a beautiful performance. It is especially nice to listen to this performance with 3 to 4 ounces of Belgian chocolate- the kind that is about 50% cocao. Bach is simply incomparable; his work is the epitome of human accomplishment; better than landing on the moon, or even landing on Mars. I was surprised that the applause was so reserved. Maybe those in the audience needed some chocolate.

  • Anyone who even tries to criticize any of Bach's pieces is either a pretentious snob or a madman...

  • Waht a beautiful song, can't stop rewindin' it

  • @sevylines it's not a song... this is called a piece of music. A song is something that has lyrics. And it's usually something modern.,,

  • @Tankgiaco But this piece has lyrics...Anyway i think you're right dude,maybe i should've called it "lullaby"

  • @Tankgiaco

Absolutely ridiculous. Songs are not defined by the presence of lyrics. Nor do they have to be written within the past century. Sure, the "dictionary definition" of a song may say otherwise, but the connotation in today's world is that songs are defined by the musicality of whatever is being played.

  • @Tankgiaco It doesn't have to be modern. I bet if you were born in the time of Bach, you would think of this as a song. Yes, it is a piece of music, but actually if you listen to the original version, there is a choir. This is just a piano arrangement because there was no piano in Bach's time. Also, I do agree with funwes that songs are defined by their musicality. Just feel the music, there is no need for lyrics, so just go with it i guess is what I'm trying to say.

  • Bach's music has the perfection of a crystal. Structured with a mathematical precision but like a crystal its beauty lies in the way it refracts the light.

  • It is as relaxing as Canon in D

  • I better not be listening to this lullaby on the highway.Otherwise i may sleep while driving and have an accident :)

  • @coglione11 Yeah, this IS a pretty slow version. And even the more common (slightly faster) tempos may be slower than Bach intended. From Wikipedia: "Today, it is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, in defiance of the effect suggested by Bach in his original scoring."

  • Same here, I wish I could find a slower version though. : /

  • All I can think of is the End of Evangelion menu...

  • @Shadeskulls haha, me too. That version is a slower version that most. I do prefer it slower though.

  • Delicate but strong! I like this a lot!

  • @notanignoramus

    I think so!

  • I've listened to my fair share of classical music in my days, how can I have missed this one?

  • One of the most touching piece ever written .. I would sure cry when I sit there ans listing .. it is .. just stunning

  • The wooden phone commercial brought me here

  • @ldoug9 check! xD

  • @ldoug9

    ahahahahaha me toooooo :D

  • @ldoug9 meee to! :D

  • @ldoug9 ME TOO!!! :-)

  • @prilstrudel Thats an awful sentiment. You come off as a music snob, rather than a music lover. I think it is because of people like you that classical music is dying. It doesn't matter how one has come across the music, it just matters that we all have the ability too enjoy it.

    Don't be a snob.

  • @martybrodeur111

I guess you're right. Therefore, I removed my 1st comment.

  • @martybrodeur111 Could have just called him a hipster.

  • @martybrodeur111 Thank you!!!!!!! If you love music truly, then you love it all, well maybe not Justin Bieber (LOL). Montavani to Motorhead I always say, love it all. These classical guys are the masters, we all copied them. The rock stars of their day. In fact this piece was used by The Beach Boys as the basis for Lady Linda! Like I said we ALL copied from them.

  • @martybrodeur111 Go easy on me.I'm not a snob and my musical knowledge is not that extensive. I was only admiring Bach.It does have a perfection. I understand that Bach was intersted in the mathematical structure of music and I do love it.I agree that all that matters is that we enjoy it. From your comment "People like you " I suspect you're an inverted snob or have some issues. Don't be an inverted snob. xx

  • @lwalpole my comment was not directed at you...

  • @ldoug9 Hey there, Jay from UK here. I saw your comment, you put a smile on my face, thanks. You never guess what bought me here? The Citizen Band Radio bought me here as someone on the community channel 19 was playing Buddy Green who plays the Harmonica like me. ;) Have a good day there.

  • funny hair

  • Reality is at the end of your dream.

  • @RudojiLape evangelion I'm guessing...?

  • @rehanabey Yeah, though I did take a little liberty with it =w=

  • @RudojiLape I love you for making this reference.

  • I've always preferred performances of this on piano, just like this, to the orchestral versions. There is something so intimate about the way it sounds.

  • Beautiful. This is what music is all about. Own interpretation of the artist in front of the piano. Who says that you have to play it as originally intended?

  • ブーニンのバッハリサイタルに入ってるやつが今まで一番よかったのだけど、

    この演奏の方が好きだ。

  • @irreplaceability no pues si...

  • Exquisite delicacy. I would not have thought that a piano execution could be so enjoyable. Excellent legato in pianissimo, a true caress. Bravo.

  • Bach never meant the song to be played like this sorry

  • @bennyfifty So, how do you know that?

  • @bennyfifty -- who cares?

  • @bennyfifty !!??!

  • He did this song justice. Thank you so much.:'D

  • Slower, but it really speaks to your soul the way he is playing it. Wonderful!!

  • Blest be thy hands!

  • best song!

  • i have his book and can play this song too but not as perfect as this!

but then again i don't have a beautiful grand to play it on either.

  • My mother played this to me on more occasions than i dare to remember. She tried to teach me how to play but unfortunately I was a lost cause !

    Just beautiful !!

  • @snowboardkitten and similars: this is the Myra Hess transcription: not simple like you think... you have to be really skilled to perform it well; There are simplified transcriptions for children, or "one key at time" reductions, because there's a main singing melody, but the full armonic construction, and secondary subjects are omitted. If you played it at the age of 9, for sure there are plenty of yours video performing Rachmaninov concerts... can you link some please? hahahaha

  • BEST VERSION EVER !

  • I think this is played with great reverence to the words of the hymn ??

    Delightful.

    Thank-you for posting.

  • what horrible posture

  • Does anyone know if Alon playing this piece is available on CD...I would love to have a copy of this truly remarkable playing.

  • Absolutely delightful. Thank you for posting it. Regards

  • A masterpiece of Bach, my favorite composer!

  • Best song by Bach!!

  • very mellow and a good version. Very good!!!

  • AWESOME!

I love how this gives the same feel as the original interpretation, but in a completelly different way.

Makes me think of gentle rain, falling over a new day's morning

  • for me, this it possibly the best version of this piece on youtube

  • By Far My Favorite Version. Alon is the most beautiful in interpretation. So soft. Holds back so sweetly and he's got probably three signature "pushes" of his own for flavor. Superb performance!

What great dynamics compared to other performances. Thank You Alon!

  • Very lyrical with a just-perfect mezzo forte.

  • is this a more complex version or did he play it by ear?

  • @hardcorefan343 This is the Myra Hess transcription.

  • i meant sheet music

  • Elementary peice or not... It's beautiful...

  • elemantary, that is. typo...sorry

  • The reason why everyone is bored is because this is elemtary piano. It's as though he's playing like a maestro but he's playing something I learned when I was 9.

  • @snowboardkitten take a look at the notes....i bet 100$ dollars that you werent able to read those kinds of notes at age nine

  • @snowboardkitten Well, here we have a musical genius.

  • @snowboardkitten hahahahahahaha u learned it when u were 9.... so? u got no talent to be up there. plus, not like you made this so why do u simply considering as this as elementary? what you are saying is very stupid.

  • 0:15

  • I think this its a little weird....He is play too soft, and the way he moves his hands is like he is not completely secure of the thing.....One thing its play like that in purpose, but it does not look like that....I have heard other people play this song, and I believe this gay is not too good......

  • @Jackie00666 soft an flowing but the slowness, ya makes me think he doesnt know it really reallly well. He does bring out the melody notes distinctly tho.

  • it reminds me of End of Evangelion :3

  • Bleurgh, sounds so insipid and boring. The way he minces off at the end fits his 'interpretation' of the piece.

  • woow it's very beautifull

  • nice finger and sound control. peaceful interpretation. that hall has lovely accoustics!

  • Thanks, for upload this.

  • Very nice. Thanks for posting, Yuriy.

    Ron

  • almost any amateur player here does it better.

with more feel and characteristic floating.

this guy is dull as one can be. probably thinks too much of himself

  • Goldstein's playing is an interpretation of the piece. While I agree with you that it sounds better when played slightly faster, his speed isn't drastically slower than Myra Hess's tempo, who wrote this arrangement for piano.

I don't really like how he slows down at certain parts. Sometimes that makes a piece more dramatic, but I think in this one it just drags it out a little. But that's just my opinion. I think Goldstein plays this beautifully.

  • @Oldtinear I did it and I didn't run out of breath. You have to breath right however I personally like it a bit faster.

  • Emi, Well done, though I suspect that you must be a woman - in my experience they have more powerful lungs than men! It is the constant practice!

  • Ha!

  • @Otacon144 Ha!, eh? A cruel accusation! But maybe harsh but fair.

  • @Oldtinear It was a good joke! ._.

  • ScottZirpolo

You stole my comment, the piano is more than just an instrument, it's one of the few inventions capable of transmitting 100% of the feeling behind the play.

  • Bach is my "favorite" composer. This composer has the great musicology, dynamics, and heartfelt spirit. I ghive him an A+. wolfgangpitbullingtonIII!

  • It seems that the piano can hold so much more feeling and emotion than the orchestra behind it. It isn't the greatest instrument in the world. More like one of mankind's greatest achievements.

  • I agree! Although I love this piece done in particular by harpsichord.

  • Really great, soft and with such feeling of peace and deep... Meditation itself...

  • excellent

  • it is the best version that i've ever experienced...he plays as if he were talking to angels right up there...speechless in messages...

  • My wife and I had this piece playing in the church just before our wedding. Listening to it brings back a lot of beautiful memories.

  • @asd36f

    are u faggot

    ?

  • @yurimaria1987

Sit down, close your mouth and don't say anything unless you say it well and respect others.

  • @asd36f I think everyone does. lol

  • This is quietly becoming one of y favorite songs!

  • he is good plays better than me im learning how to play this piece.....he is kinda slow but still great is that a double bass in the background

  • GREAT clear melody in both hands!!

    great great great!!

  • I prefer this wonderful slow version. Very very cool!

  • Incredible performance, I don't care much for the choir version, but this gives me the chills.

  • That piano looks really satisfying to play.

  • whats the motion time for this vid! was it normal or slow when it was recorded! it is so beautiful though!

  • he play not too fast

  • We are spoiled for choice! Jesu joy sounds wonderful whether played in two different interpretations as a piano solo, as here, but also as an organ solo, organ & choir, orchestra & choir, or orchestra & solo singer. I have a CD where the choral part is played as a clarinet solo, and it sounds marvelous. Bach was a clever begger!

  • He definitely doesn't play it like it's exercise. I checked Caroline Hong's interpretation and it's very different. It's more flowing, it's a little bit dull, because melody is not that bright. Goldstein's version is relaxingly slow and melody is really clear. I like both versions, but they are like apples and oranges. Really hard to compare. Goldstein has totally different goal than Hong.

  • Caroline Hong does not need me to defend her playing from any accusation that it is dull - it speaks for itself.

Interestingly, Mr Goldstein is playing a slightly truncated version of the piece - the pleasing descending cascade at 2.48 in CH's version is absent from AG's.

  • Oh my! I should have checked what other meanings there are for dull word. Because I meaned CH doesn't have that big contrast between melody and background than AG. Maybe he just haved little blackout there. However both versions are exceptionally good!

  • lol .... this is ridicolous.

    Hong "flows better"???

Her tempo suggests someone going to hunt rabbits! and it's the most inexpressive choice a pianist could have made about this chorale

  • Hmmm I have no wish to trade insults with someone who cannot spell his. I picture a farmer with a shotgun when I think of someone hunting rabbits and have little idea how to comment on this as a metaphor for a piano tempo.

Just put it to the test. Jesu Joy is a delightful piece, which peaks at CH 2.12 and AG at 2.20. Listen a few times to the ten seconds from here for each piece. CH's is a stunning piece of virtuosity. AG stumbles and misses the opportunity.

  • god damm... fucker really nails it don't he. First place I heard it was switched on bach.. but this is a WHOLE different story.. all those voices.. those variations...soooo wonderful. It's no wonder why they invited J.S. to all the best beer parties.
