  • Thanks for the tips. I was looking for another linux solution for a router. This one is great, VPN and other neat items.

  • i need one for my web server which one do i use ??

  • "Lets go ahead.."

  • "So, I'm gunna go ahead..."

  • "Go ahead.."

  • internet

    i am using

    amd phenom 2 x4 955be 125w

2gb corsair xsms3 platinum edition ram

    asus M4N68T-M LE V2

alpine 750w psu (probably not 750w as cheap crap lol)

    connexiant broadband modem

    160gb sata drive

    8 in 1 card reader

i am only using the phenom 2 untill i get something cheaper like a old school RM school computer from ebay i am using this stuff because its what i have lying around and i am using a homehub with another ISP and its crap so i really need a router do u think it will work ok

  • hi i have a mentor connexiant internal pci broadband modem in my area we only get 8meg and thats how much it can take

this runs on some linux and windows xp and windows vista but windows 7 with alot of fiddling with drivers and stuff

basicly do you think i could install this in the router i am planning on building so that the router also plugs directly into the phone line and is my direct internet connection with no external adapters

because i can have this pci modem in my pc and have direct

  • "Gesundheit" xD Nice, almost like a german^^

  • great show hands down!

  • Doman.com sucks fucking balls. they wouldnt even let me set up a site cause my password was innappropriate. and then after getting passed that.. they said if it had any content relating to hacking i couldnt have the website.. which was gonna be a blog... but they will host these guys?!?! Fuck Domain.com i hate those homo's

  • larry the cow is the unofficial mascot of gentoo

  • Vyatta :)

  • Hey Kitchen if u were female it would be funny !!!!!!!!:D

  • This is a real informative video. Good job Darren

  • good thing that woman that does the ads is so hot unless that damn ad part was hella boring

  • the video wont load bc my router sucks.... irony

  • damn, this is way too awesome. Now I gotta build my own router...

  • If anything will help you getting a better connection, lower latency and better gaming experience online it is NOT USING WIRELESS. With todays broadband speeds reaching 30-100 Mbps you will always bottleneck it with a crappy wifi connection. Use cables for gods sake. I can't even get my 32Mbps trough my wifi router when I'm right next to it.

  • @tjpld sounds like you need a firmware upgrade try ddwrt or openwrt!

  • @tjpld I AGREE COMPELETLY, besides who need to own a router when you have Backtrack?

  • Daren KITCHEN

  • @AlbertInSanAntonio he is taking a shit at the time. sorry

  • This is absolutely stupid, cutting off IDE on the longer end, lets use a AC/DC converter with no over voltage, current, temp, and all that protection. Oh hey lets also be a total moron while we are at it. I would advise you to stop trying to be creative and leave the computer stuff to people with a real idea on what they are doing as you seem to not know what you are doing.

  • kay so, what exacly did he make?

  • If you connect a wireless card, will that work as a wireless router?

  • Nice!

    Lets go wireless with it.

  • What Hard dirive did you use?

  • I built one on wood.. Trick for the HDD is scan it so u have a template, or use a pencel and punch a hole in paper to mount the drive.. I turned an xbox into a pc with a small board years ago,.. Can send u a video if you'd like :)

  • Trivia answer is gentoo

  • Loooool 16:00 Did he say Gesundheit?

    :D

  • Why don't you go ahead and stop saying your going to go ahead ?

  • i wonder if it holds files and stuff also, because the harddrive being used??

  • so you need to have internet connection already? or this is so you can use free internet access?

  • @jasonnmn You'll need to have internet connection already.

  • the presenter seems to have a hint of troll about him.

  • i love thos mini itx motherboards look what i did ith mine on my small shop.... facebook/royaltec

  • If I build one of these with a dual core can it stop DDoS attacks?

  • You are supposed to use the fence on the table saw!

  • Awesome :)

  • sat through the pre-show ad. Sat through the in-show ad.

People who say "I've gone ahead and..." sound like Lumberg. You don't "go ahead and " do something; you just DO something. Lose the overused cliche phrase!

  • Sweet ! I just downloaded the smoothwall virtual appliance to run in vmware to play around with ... planning on building my own home router in near future.

    Cool episode !

  • It's generally considered bad practice to use 4.2.2.2 (or any of it's relatives 4.4.2.[1-6] ) for DNS resolution. You should stick to your ISPs DNS servers, Google's 8.8.8.8 public DNS server, or a service such as OpenDNS that is designed for widescale DNS resolution. While 4.2.2.2 is open to the public for testing, it's not meant for permanent use on your network and it's private providers are under no obligation to keep making the service available. Let's not take advantage by abusing it.

  • you have a lilo erro there:P

  • dose any one know were i can get that connector cause im looking and cant find it

  • @HydrogenRules but can you build the router with the asus at3iont-i or dose it has to be a board that was ment for that

  • this guys a bit of a douche...

  • why not use a Mikrotik NIC Card?

  • 2gigs from zumodrive ftw IT PWNS

  • Dude.Proof that parallel universes exist: The Sneaker Pimps Six Feet Under plays incessantly in my head when I build too, BTW what's up with the Wireless Video? Great Vid.

  • should cut a piece of paper the size of the acrylic .... put the paper aligned on the hd according to where you want it. then place paper back on acrylic and drill /..... i work in that god forsaken field lol

  • measure once cut twice 20:12

  • nice

  • Epic!!! ^-^

  • i love this episode you need to make like a part 2 for making this into a wireless router...thumbs up if u agree!

  • ya need more soft light

  • Could I get some info on the power supply? That is just what I am looking for.

  • those hak5 stickers look like they might fit perfectly on the sides of your router... jusssayinnn

  • if, for nothing else, the whole ep. is worth watching for the girl doing the online backup commercial. I'd marry her if my wife would let me.

  • These are definitely the kind of projects I like to see. Please, please, please post more. By the way, great job!

  • I have a tiny motherboard that looks like the one you showed, but it has a pentium 4 processor, will it be compatible with that power connector or does it need a full fledged power supply?

This is a very intersting show, but I think you should give me information on the components used. Maybe have a list of all the stuff you talked about in the description?

  • @gordon1201 i agree with you on the list of components

  • Ive been subscribed to this a long time but never actually watched the shows. i actually like this one. You guys should have your own youtube channel.

Im actually working on a car pc system. It uses 7 computers and in the back 6 of them are stacked. I had six thin client cases laying around, so I recycled them and stacked them that way. I used The INTEL ATOM Johnston board and paired them with 2.5 HDD with 20GB, 2GB RAM. They are powered with the 3 M4-ATXs'.

  • I was looking to buy a new router, but this will probably be better and I think im going to make it... one question though... how will you hook up more devices through ethernet ports, do you need to buy a wired router? is there some kind of 4-10 ethernet port splitter that you attach to the other end of "green" card?

  • Great Job. Really liked this one a lot.

  • LOL. i definately want some stickers

  • Anybody else notice the 2999 videos?

  • Rad video, awsome info too, and i was gonna buy a $300 cisco router, f-that! I finally have a use for my p4 again lol!

  • Awesome. Makes me want to pull out my current router and make my own now.

  • Cool one man...This is awesome and I hope more soon....!!!

  • nice

  • The answer is GEntoo!!!

  • deffinetely more projects like this. love the hardware aspect of things but am a complete retard when it comes to software. lol

  • why didn t u use your drill press

  • I want more of these. i am definately gonna be building the wireless access point one.

  • daoc player. was clearly an inf that hung out on the bridge.

  • Nice tits

  • You could have gotten a piece of paper and a pencil to scribble in the areas where the holes are on the HDD and presto! You have a template. You can also outline the HDD and cut out after getting the hole alignment.

  • Hak5 is the $#!@!!!

  • I want to see about real time anti-virus, I could really sell that item.

  • Gentoo Linux

  • So... my modem already acts as the router (pretty shitty, too, can't even keep a steady stream over wi-fi), how could I use this with it? :::::::::: Disable all firewalls and security on the modem and connect it with this home-made router which then connects to a switch that connects to my devices?

  • I like this format. i'd like to see you build a GPU folding computer or somehting like that. - T

  • Major points for singing SNEAKER PIMPS - SIX UNDERGROUND.

  • Nice commandN T-Shirt! Props to Amber!

  • Wow, this one was one of your best videos!

  • i think what darren should build a htpc + backup + firewall next and make it all low power to operate 24/7 ideal for under a tv; recording shows with a program timer and backing up more than one pc by; waking it up at a certain time, backing up, then makeing it shutdown for use the next day..

That would probably be the ultimate one box solution. obviously needing more than 2tb and probably the socket p core2duo with some compatible motherboard that i spoted on newegg yesterday...

  • I'd like 2 see Darren build a nas Backup solution + a firewall combo

  • Wow, this is actually pretty useful.

  • Whats the most powerful processor you can find on a mini atx?

  • @dlouis95 there is no such thing as mini atx. ther is mico atx or mini itx...

a powerfull micro atx motherboard + processor setup is evga's x58 micro motherboard with intel's i7 980x that will run you about $1,300 just for the mobo&cpu.

If you want to go cheap- get the ASUS M4A88TD-M/USB3 for the motherboard and the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T. that will cost about $450

both setups are extreamly fast, i would actually recommend going amd considering you could buy a 30" monitor with your savings!

  • need more leds

  • i will stick with my linksys

  • good vid, needs better res.

  • More episodes like this! By far one of the best.

  • @BAMFT Ditto, I love when they do custom mods and hands of stuff instead of just talk.

  • i have the same battery drill...

  • radioactive rubber duckies??? lol

  • @pwkn0 by the way you wouldn't be able to take a bath in Gama radiation from a smoke alarm as they only emit alpha radiation and no gamma lol

    physics rules lol

  • @cunijoeme Man, I was looking forward to my Gamma bath tonight! Oh well.

  • @pwkn0 when will people learn that alpha radiation is the meaning on life

  • This has been like the 3rd best episode yet!

  • gratz on the 3000th video... soon

  • lol mother board sits on top of hard drive with two nuts and sag!

  • Best episode ever!

  • Awe that would be such a awesome website

  • lol omg It actually worked.. thanks ive been trying to do this for like the past hour

  • Nice one

  • is there a way to buy one of these ITK boards?

  • @Skai2O They sell Mini-ITX boards at Newegg.

  • @Skai2O if you mean ITX, most online stores should stock at least a few...try newegg or ncix

  • You dont need 2 NIC's if you use VLAN's. Then you need just one NIC.

  • 50th view :)

  • with some editing you could get 15 minutes off the video.

  • nice

  • awsome

  • cool man awsome

  • Cool just finished watching

    I'ma build one.

  • holy crap 1st view
