The Republican Party only came into existance in the 1850's because the Democratic Party and Whig Party refused to abolish slavery or adopt progressive platforms. Teddy Roosevelt, the last liberal Republican president, decided to run against the Republican nominee in 1912 because he felt the nominee wasn't liberal enough.
Beginning around that time, Republicans began to align more with the wealthy. Up until the 1960's the Democratic party had 2 branches - the very conservative racist Southern faction and the liberal northern faction. When liberal Democrats and Republicans pushed through Civil Rights laws in the 60's, southern Democrats bolted the party and voted for George Wallace, a racist governor, rather than the Democratic nominee...
Nixon capitalized on the division in the Democratic Party and won in 68 & 72 by pulling conservative southern Democrats into Republican ranks. The flip was made complete by Ronald Reagan, who's stated support for 'states rights' was pretty much a code word for racist southerners who opposed school integration and black voting rights.
It wasn't until the conservative southern Democrats bailed on the Democratic party that the Democratic Party became THE liberal party, and the Republican Party THE conservative party.

The Republican Party only came into existance in the 1850's because the Democratic Party and Whig Party refused to abolish slavery or adopt progressive platforms. The Republican Party, at it outset, was EXTREMELY liberal. It remained pretty progressive right up until the early 1900's. Teddy Roosevelt, the last liberal Republican president, decided to run against the Republican nominee in 1912 because he felt the nominee wasn't liberal enough.

@onstageagain Yea its called interest!! The debt created under bush creates debt, which in turn you end up paying interest on that, that interest isnt paid its borrowed and added to the debt! So by the time the next president takes over you end up incurring more debt. Its called macro economics. Obama gave some black kids healthcare, not rush kids off into the desert looking for something that isnt there. Cry me a river.

Do you even know what numbers factor in to the debt ceiling, from departments that Obama doesn't have power over. Did you know our government is a system of checks and balances?

We were told the economy was great and has a great footing so go out there and spend your money and use your credit card it will all work out. @onstageagain There were no safeguards or regulation or oversight that had previously been on banks & other public businesses. We were de-regulated & given ability to do business without any Gov.restraint. CEO's got very greedy & also practiced poor business practices as the gov. was guaranteeing mortgages & deposits in banks. No one anticipated banks would not operate with good business policies They went wild, offered impractical loans & alsmost impossible to pay back.

Could anyone run a school, company or even a sports team if the employees or athletes were always fighting each other and their leader? How can we expect the president to help guide the economy when Congress blocks his efforts? I want change this election and I don't mean a new president.

@onstageagain let's see... the gap between actual and full-employment GDP would have been much larger without TARP and ARRA, unemployment would have been higher without ARRA, GDP would have been lower without the Recovery Act, the Private Sector has begun to add jobs, & the economy is better than before he took office whether you like it or not... and that's just some of his economic accomplishments, you want to see more go to the website like i told you the first time

One of the great rights guaranteed to Americans by the Constitution is peacefully remove incumbents from office, an act which they performed brilliantly in the 1980 Presidential election & the 2010 Congressional elections.
