1988 Broadway The Hard Way tour line up: FZ, Ike Willis, Scott Thunes, Robert Martin, Ed Mann, Chad Wackerman, Mike Keneally, Bruce Fowler, Walt Fowler, Paul Carmen, Albert Wing, Kurt McGettrick. A great version of this can be found on the "The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life", one of three full length albums FZ compiled from the 1988 live performances.
I think Frank Zappa's live performances, more than his recorded music, never took the music anywhere near as seriously (read: ponderously) as the rock and roll Industry made it out to be. At the same time, Zappa and his band were absolutely serious about their music.
So, the Zeppelin song is an excellent musical platform onto which the Mothers perform a rock song - but let's not take to swinging up our hands with lighted lighters on just yet...
It took him more musicians and more vocalists to do the same job Led Zeppelin would do with only three musicians. And he was not even being original. Time will tell but I think Led Zep will be remembered for generations to come. Sorry, Frank who ?
you gotta be kidding me right? hahah... if you dont know who frank zappa is you gotta be a musical retard. He not only is a huge part of the history of music, he composed classical albums which were not even rock, he has more albums than led zeppelin thats for damn sure, and they were more musically written as well. He just happened to have a sense a humor, and you are lucky to hear him make a rendition of the zeppelin classic for you to enjoy. Shows the mutual respect they have, you have none.
I saw him do this at the Nassau Colliseum back in ...hell, it must have been 1981 or so...anybody else remember?? He also did "Whipping Post", and some people were ANGERED that he was playin other stuff...
Frank Zappa was the father of invention, the most caustic iconoclast of the rock-and-roll era. ''My job,'' he once said, ''is extrapolating everything to its most absurd extreme.'' And Zappa, who died of prostate cancer Saturday on December 4, 1993 at age 52, clearly loved his job.
If yes too actually. But I think you didn't get the spirit of the cover simply because I imaginate you don't know who and what is Franck Zappa. Franck Zappa is a genius, very clever, but is music is very special. And the idea to make the solo of the song with trompets perfectly illustrates his genius : jazzy, odd, ecstatic...
I'm not a fan of this cover, but I appreciate the idea and I'm found of Franck Zappa, even if I'm only beginning to discover him.
ok, line up from right to left: Ike Willis, Steve Vai (i think, it's so hard to see) Zappa, Scott Thunes; Backstage: the horn section of that time usually consisted of: Bruce Fowler, Walt Fowler, Kurt McGettrick, Albert Wing and Paul Carmen. Chad Wackerman is the drummer and Ed Mann on percussion. hope it helps some.....
It's not Vai - its a very young Mike Keneally - Vai has a different build and would never dress like that... Mike was one of the few guys who tried to keep the 82/84 band together when they were all attacking Scott Thunes for being too clever and improvising on bass with Frank's solos...
ME TOO! if u wanna get the CD quality version. its from "the best band you've never heard before - frank zappa" it has a great version of sunshine of your love and purple haze.
of course, this would be all subjective opinion. and i think frank done stairway way better than zepplin did or ever could. obviously the humour was in there. but frank, in the late 80's when he knew his time was up soon, was out to get everyone. =)
i dont noe wat ur talking about stairway to heaven is when the band was at its best no remake can out do the original except all along the watch tower and thats it!!
@zabman23 How could you say this is a better version than the original...Damn, compared to Zeppelin this is noise. I respect Zappa, but this is just a very well technically done parody. It has not a single bit of the real and unique power just one word sung by Plant has, period.
And what is Zappa doing in the final? Snapping his fingers. C'mon.
he should've done dazed n confused instead...this is too commercial for him... and again he's not doing the vocals....if you're going to cover then sing it mother!
Check out Lather, there is a piece on disc 3 called Leather Goods, it's live and it covers both Dazed & Confused and Whole Lotta Love, there's no singing it's a guitar solo only.....except for some sound effects at the beginning and Terry Bozzio doing a John Smothers impersonation at the end, check it out.
he was a crazy genious..

I think we can all agree that Frank Zappa was a genius. But it's covers like these that show he could also be an idiot.

@figaz555 And it's comments like these that show you're an idiot as well.
