Bro, u have to sweep those beginning arpeggios. Alternate picking will make it sound like....well.....listen to this again then compare Trey. I'm NOT talking bout the not mistakes, that's understandable, but if u sweep it's all so much smoother. Just sayin'.
i said this about another young fellow that i heard a cover of today.. you sound like you know the song (for the most part) but why dont you take the time and practice and do a few takes before you put it up on the internet... i mean i admit that its better than I can do
@apokradical im just sayin.. seems like a lotta people rush to get stuff up with a ton of mistakes even tho they can redo it.. and i guess what im sayin is it sounds like you can do it perfectly just didnt quite get it as perfect as it could be here.. and unlike other loose jam based phish songs- this is composition based so there actually is a right and wrong way to play it... but you're still freaking awesome as is anyone who can play YEM this well
@apokradical yea sorry that came off as a dickish comment.. i guess what i was trying to say was it sounds like you can obviously nail this song .. i was just thinking since you're putting it up on youtube you might as well try to get it as perfect as possible before you put it out there to the vicious masses
nice job dude, Trey Anastasio was one of my greatist inspirations to start playing, but i gotta say with a nice tube amp and a hollow body this would sound awsome!
as much as i utterly love and am obsessed with phish, trey and everything to do with them, this song may not be as complicated as it's made out to be, note-wise;
think about it; isn't 90% of the piece arpeggios? i've written a few things similar in style to this, and if you have a chord progression, all you have to do is turn it into arpeggios...
but it is still a masterpiece, and getting it up to tempo is probably the hardest part.
@DnMZen, that might be the case if traditional chords were used in this piece. Or if you had eight fingers. You think its not that hard? lets see your vid!
My style of play is naturally blues, so to try to pick this one up was difficult for me, just to adjust the style of play, as you mentioned arpeggios. But this song is in no way shape or form 'easy'
i just wonder if you can jam with a whole band on that song... Do you have rhythm? That was very impressive. I bet it took a shat load of practice. Nice work dude.
They may not be exactly right, but that whole part is tension-release. They aren't supposed to sound "nice", but rather they emphasize the happy nature of the following chords.
@apokradical they're flat out wrong, bro... E-19 A-17 D-16 G-0 B-0 E-0 and then move it all down to E-17 A-15 D-14 G-0 B-0 E-0. and make sure you UPSTROKE, not downstroke. not bad otherwise
tiegs, you obviously have no taste in music. YEM is one of Phish's most popular masterpieces, so go tell that to one of phish's millions of followers.
A well played YEM is an epic experience. Great tension-release, building, and jam. Many Phish fans would consider it a masterpiece of Trey's, you should listen to the real song before bashing it based on my lone guitar.
how the fuck can you say that??, first of all you dont even know who wrote it, second, it's a very complex and is filled with concepts beyond your comprehension. you can learn and improve so much as a musician by playing it and learning the fine points. Im not saying he's bad but you cant really capture the full experience from just guitar. so fuck you
OMG!!! Dude that's pretty sick. To take the time and effort to learn such a complex song, wow. Probably one of the most impressive things I've seen on Youtube yet.
it takes a REAL fan like you to put in the time and effort to figure out something as complex and daunting as YEM. hats off to you, brotha -- impressive effort. keep at it, and it'll get faster and cleaner. YEM's on my list of "must do (well) before I die" songs. Seeing your vid's a breath of fresh air dude - you embody the Phish spirit and they'd be proud.
The low E string is called 6 and the high E is 1. So even though you are physically going down the strings it is called going "up" the strings....
So what i am saying is don't sweep pick. just use all alternate picking (that's what trey does too). It will be much harder at first, but if you practice it that way you will get it....
It's fine either way.. sometimes guitar players develop sweeping when they are going up (musically not physically) and then alternate on the way back down. this is just because its a bajillion times more awkward to sweep down (musically). I don't know what trey does, but I usually alternate this all the way through. But I do try sweeping it for practice sometimes.

You play well, but invest in a better guitar. That thing is a shitstick....

I have "better" guitars, and the Schecter is not a shitstick with new pickups.
What do you recommend? PRS? Languedoc?

@apokradical Languedoc... lol... good luck with that

great work on getting the licks down, but play it much slower, with a metronome and really try to nail each note

Good job. I notice you alternate-picking in some places that could use sweep-picking for fluidity. Again, god job!

dude, you gotta use alternate picking all the way through. you are using all down strokes when you are going up the strings....

I am sweeping down and alternating up, it isn't humanly possible to down stroke up the strings. Look again
