You can choose to smoke or not to smoke, but I can't choose to breathe or not to breathe. So go somewhere else with your little cancer tubes and fill *only your own lungs* with that shit, thank you.
Is it a major cause of cancer? Of course not, but it is a contributing factor nonetheless. It doesn't matter how minor it is, if it harms people.
Secondhand smoke is classified as a “known human carcinogen” by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US National Toxicology Program, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization. That is a fact.
@Kuba022 Apparently you didn't watch the vid at all. Bureaucracies are not a place where you find sound science. Your whole list is nothing but bureaucracies. Just because a bureaucrat says something doesn't mean it's true. Didn't the EU recently require all bottled water to carry a labels declaring that water doesn't hydrate a person? Did it make it true? Science is not politics, even though most people confuse the two.
@OriginalTexcalibur Not enough for you? Fine, then google: "secondhand smoke bibliography". You will find an extensive list of peer-reviewed studies of various effects associated with secondhand smoking. There are tons of evidence that it's harmful. Ignoring all of that makes you, well, the ignorant.
@Kuba022 Actually I have no problem with the science, and already knew it exists. I was just correcting ignorant thinking. I guess you just want to argue, because I NEVER ONCE DENIED YOUR POINT. I just denied their ignorance in where "facts" come from. Geez, people!
@OriginalTexcalibur Those organizations didn't just arbitrarily decide that seconhand smoke is bad. If you are familiar with the research, you should know that. They didn't do it "just 'cause". Their facts come from research. Plenty of research.
Penn said there isn't a single study anywhere offering conclusive proof that breathing secondhand smoke causes cancer. This is BULLSHIT. As much as I like the guy, in this video he's full of it.
@Kuba022 I agree totally on your assessment of this show, but your statement about "plenty of research" doesn't hold water when you compare it to the EU's new policies. (pun intended). Scientist themselves should be scrutinized, but I never take the word of a bureaucrat without scientists who have independently confirmed their results through peer review. Penn and Teller are just sensationalizing everything they do just to get ratings.
@OriginalTexcalibur Yes, some EU policies are pretty silly, just like the policies of every government on this planet. Some regulations are necessary and crucial, some are pretty stupid. But we're not talking about "some EU policy". We're talking specifically about secondhand smoking.
The organizations I mentioned did their job. They investigated the subject and drew their conclusions. There are numerous peer-reviewed studies about smoking. I'd call it "plenty of research".
@Kuba022 I have not once denied the carcinogenic effects of second hand smoke. I was simply proving, as you have admitted, that governments/bureaucracies are not who you look to for a scientific answer. I hate when people see government as something to be trusted blindly, and then use that basis to justify their scientific claims. Next time, you both will be better educated and stronger for it. Now you both can stand on something much stronger then...well, then some acronym. I wish you well. :)
Regardless of whether or not second hand smoke causes cancer I can personally testify that whenever I'm around people who smoke I get terrible headaches and just feel like shit in general so I have to disagree with them here because people shouldn't have to experience that in public places.
I have a recue bird from an abusive home. The owner of his former home was a chain smoker that turned his old white cage yellow with her nasty cigarettes. The bird now has brain damage from all of the toxins in the smoke. He has to focus hard just to stay upright on his perch and falls off of it frequently as a result. He may only be of a small, sensitive species, but don't tell me cigarettes don't do any harm. He's (amazingly still) living proof of that.
@TwistedComplex cant you see thats a terrible thing, millions of people do it just because its glorified on tv and movies, i do smoke cigarettes myself but the only reason i do is because im addicted, tobacco is one of the biggest killers, and all you get from a cigarette is your craving for a cigarette is gone, until you want another, its so point less its untrue
@MrCockSlut do what i do, start smoking pipe tobacco, bro
its still bad for you but not AS bad. and something people never acknowledge is that tobacco DOES calm you. and while that might not seem like a bad deal, stress is one of the biggest killers in the world. being under constant duress has been linked to numerous diseases, cancers, suicide and even homicide
just smoke a pipe, don't inhale and moderate yourself. i have a rule. one bowl a day, one cigar every 2 months and i live happy
@footballfreak237 the show is called bullshit, and Ikr! Quoting a man that I once had respect for, penn, they need to shut the fuck up about smoking being ok.
Whether or not this is true, smoking is a terrible habit and it smells like shit. If I'm going to a restaurant that has a lot of smoking indoors, I will leave to go somewhere else. But I won't be telling anybody what they can or cannot do.
Also, second hand smoke is still unhealthy. Don't believe me? Smoke around a part of your house with a desktop computer for a month. You'll see a layer of tar growing within the chassis. The grossest shit in the world.
The problem with many episodes of "Bullshit" is that they call stuff bullshit when in fact it's not. Basically the show is designed to ridicule many things, and later we find out they are actually quite serious. I wonder what Penn and Teller would say to the past Penn and Teller who put together this episode?
Why the fuck are they exposing bullshit about cigarettes, which are harmful, but not saying anything about weed, which is 100 times safer yet illegal.
the only beef i have with smoking is it smells bad
the only beef i have with restaurants is that their non-smoking area is just a sectioned off part of the smoking area
like, somehow that bad smelling smoke is prevented by an invisible barrier from wafting over to the non-smoking side, or that when it does it suddenly dosen't smell?
we know that what we taste and what we smell are strongly linked
if i'm eating a sandwich and i don't smoke, i don't want it to taste different
Wow so they're saying that if you don't have cancer secondhand smoking hasn't done anything to you? The show is funny but it's so freaking biased. I don't give a fuck what the evidence is. I know it's unhealthy and that's FACT. Smoking should be illegal everywhere.
If you watch their one Q&A they explain how during the filming of the show their wasn't the same information we have now. As for it being illegal everywhere. It shouldn't. At all. I may be taking your post out of context, but I'm going to assume your "everywhere" just means Public buildings. Which I agree with.
@unjabajunja Go Fuck Yourself ! And I am a nonsmoker ! If I dont want to smell someones cig when I am eating my lunch, then I donot go to a place that allows smoking.I may not want to sit in the same restaurant as you and smell your rotten body stench. But like cigarettes and other things that stink....are all about being in the public ! The public is a wide range of different people . Not just the way you want things that is what your house is for.
I find it amusing that you're all arguing over this when this is the one topic that Penn and Teller now admit that there is actually scientific evidence that suggests that second hand smoke is harmful.
I can't believe this, you're using an asshole from the Cato Institute as part of your argument against smoking bans? Are you fucking kidding me? The Cato Institute receives huge contributions from big tobacco, what did you think this corporate whore was going to say? This show is aptly named because it's nothing but pure corporate sponsored "bullshit."
Just because someone's biased, doesn't mean he's wrong or lying. It just means he's more likely to lie. They're largely using a court decision which found the EPA trials to be unreliable and cherry-picked.
The Obama administration declared Toyota vehicles unsafe due to a floor mat, a meaningless part, and it owned GM. If you have any grain of honesty, you must admit that the government is unfit to issue car recalls because it benefits by oppressing non-GM cars.
Therefore, if the natural, necessary, harmless, non-invassive act of urination should be banned in public, for the sole reason of being offensive, why then shouldn't smoking be banned, simply because people find it invasive and offensive? Add to that even the slim possibility of it being unhealthy. One other thing, the right to piss where you stand is a God given right, the cavemen did it, smoking is not a right or a need, it is a luxury.
Public urination is banned because many people find it offensive just as many people find smoking offensive. Like smoking, there is no physiological life sustaining need to pee in public, nor smoke in public. People have safe, healthy options for urination such as public washrooms, diapers, catheters, running home, smokers have options; smoke in your car, smoke at home, quit (patch, gum, cold turkey) unlike public urination smoking is potentially harmful to those who chose not to participate.
You know what, it really doesn't matter what the science says, inhaling smoke is not natural, and even if they can't prove cigarette smoke is lethal, you better damn well admit that it couldn't be GOOD for you, and also most people whi die from fires actually die from smoke inhalation, so smoke definitely is not a good thing. Some might say, but sugar is a non-lethal substance that isn't necessarily good for you, why not ban sugar? Because when you consume sugar you aren't forcing anyone else...
to consume it with you. Furthermore, smokers inhale the smoke through a filter, second hand smoke is not unfiltered. It is pretty safe to say there are two types of substances. Substances you should consume, and substances you shouldn't consume. It is generally accepted that food and water and fresh air are substances that should be consumed because they promote life. Substances we should avoid consuming include cement, gasoline and styrofoam, these substances do not promote life...
alcohol is another such substance, but at least with alcohol you aren't forcing others to consume it with you. If even you don't buy into the fact that smoking is lethal, or even unhealthy, it is a nuissance to most and there are plenty of laws prohibiting people from carrying out various acts considdered a nuissance by society. I don't see anyone griping about the government taking away our right to public urination, a natural, necessary and harmless act,
@TdotSoul I know what you mean. I ride a bike to work everyday and I'm forced to breath exhausts and in the summer all the pollen from peoples gardens get's my hay fever going like hell. also, in public i'm forced to have my testicles bombarded with radiation from other peoples phones and getting crapped on by pigeons because people feed them in town all the time. amongst other things.
BAN THESE UNNECESSARY AND NUISANCE THINGS OTHER PEOPLE DO THAT AFFECT MY HEALTH!
@JackevAll haha you're a dumbass, I hope the radiation neutered you. None of the examples you mentioned above are anything like a cigarette, cigarettes have absolutely no function in society whatsover. Vegetation and pollen is naturally occuring on earth, vegetation prevents erosion, it converts solar energy into energy that can be used by other organisms, among other things. Animal excrement is a natural thing, and all the other things you mentioned are necessary for society to function.
I used to adore Penn & Teller. Then I found out about their stance on gun control and socialism. With this segment they loose all credibility. There is definitely a concensus within the scientific community that secondhand smoking can lead to many of the same diseases as smoking itself.
The main problem is not in smoking tobacco. The problem is all the poisons tobacco processors put into cigarettes. If it were legal, which it's not, for us to grow our own tobacco I believe there would be less cancer than we have. If I could get some pure tobacco without all the poisons I'd go back to smoking again. Hey I like the taste.
I used to smoke but quit December 27 1009. When I did smoke though I did not blow smoke into peoples faces or smoked near others. When finished with the cigarette instead of tossing the butt on the ground I'd flick the remaining tobacco on the ground and put the filter into my pocket to be tossed in the garbage later. If people want to smoke, let them. It's themself they are hurting. We have NO right to tell anyone they cannot smoke. So there!
This is a pathetic and dishonest argument. In fact, if you want to be pedantic, it is impossible to prove a direct causal link between even first hand smoke and lung cancer, but there is an overwhelming statistical correlation between the two. The same applies to second hand smoke - the campaign really got going because people working in pubs and restaurants where smoking was permitted were shown to have much higher rates of cancer and heart disease. Wake up.
I don't smoke, and this show has convinced me that second-hand smoking doesn't cause diseases.
But it's still very annoying when you're at a restaurant and smoke is blown to your table. You're having a good time with your family and then you start getting smoke through your throat.
It's the same as if someone would be addicted to screaming. Even if it's a persons right to scream, you shouldn't be allowed to scream at the top of your lungs in public places. You annoy people yoou don't know.
Everyone who is reading this comment, please click on my username for my videos I made about the The Truth of the World. I'm sorry - I completely agree with Penn but I can't stop laughing at Teller in this clip. But yeah - business owners should decide, individually, and fuck the government if they think otherwise. I also think smoking is not necessarily a bad thing.
Parties recognize that scientific evidence has unequivocally established that exposure to tobacco causes death, disease and disability. Secondhand smoke is classified as a "known human carcinogen" (cancer-causing agent) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. National Toxicology Program, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization. What a bullshit video.
@AzizVikram No its a theory. Not everybody who smokes gets cancer. Very few actually do. Most people in the 70's did smoke. Any way, don't go into a bar that has smoking. Why don't people get that. What about drinking?
@dukeljk Let me get this straight. You think that all the evidence of the negative health effects of tobacco smoke is just a theory? And you base this on the notion that not everyone who smokes gets cancer? And what the fuck did I say about going into a bar? Nothing. Why are you so retarded? Maybe your mom drank and smoked when she was pregnant with you.
saying that second hand smoke causes cancer is not a legit reason, ill agree because that has to happen over a period of time, and not in just random public places. But if you smoke in a place with a large amount of people, you are just showing what a selfish addicted bitch you really are.
You sir, are an idiot. Lets say someone breathes smoke right into your face. It hurts your eyes, it smells horrid, hurts your throat, and for people with Asthma like me, stops you from breathing.
Stop bitching like a little girl. You are obviously selfish and completly addicted to cigarettes. Ive had to leave resturants or sporting events because of selfish idiots like you that dont realize how much smoking unsettles other people. Banning smoking in public places is legit. Saying...
If someone did that, its assault. Just like if they spit in your face. This issue has nothing to do with that, and is a discussion about our rights as Americans, and rights as business owners to decide who they serve. The entire episode was about rights, and like 4 lines were about the harmfulness of second hand smoke, cause it wasn't the issue being debated. ANY combusted carcinogen is harmful to us, even perfumes can harm you if you breath them in. Should we ban all perfumes(deodorants ect..)?
Any way you cut it, pollution and cologne and etc does not amount to the effect any sort of smoke in closed places has on non smokers.
I don't agree with bans of any kind, I am saying that smokers in general are inconsiderate. 1 cigarette in a closed restaurant pretty much kills my taste buds. I can't enjoy the food I paid for. And why? Because some feel that they should smoke after a coffee. I understand what you're saying, however the smell of smoke is pretty stagnant.
If someone wanted to park their cars indoors where you eat and leave them running would you be okay with that because people have the right to do whatever they want?
Also as far as cologne remark, it'd take a lot of cologne spilled everywhere to spread rapidly through the restaurant and effect your taste buds.
Besides at some point no one was smoking, then someone made a conscious decision to smoke, then have the balls to tell me to go home if I don't like it because they have the right?
I spend good money to eat and I am not asking the smokers to quit or to be hunted like animals nor do I care about government bans. Just show some respect to non smokers who just want to enjoy the lack of smoke in the air in confined spaces.
@dukeljk the thing is a lot of people smoke in the streets~~~they just stand around and smoke; It's not something that can be easily avoided that way, I agree that if a bar is a smoke-allowing bar and you don't like smoke don't go there, but I don't think people should infringe upon other people's right to be smoke free and call it their right----they can smoke at home or wherever smoking is permitted. It's just like if I masturbate in public and say, hey it's a free country haha
Second hand smoke does kill. and it stinks and infringes on my right to clean fresh air. So take it to your car or in your house - but dont litter the ground and the air withy our freakin nasty smoke.
Perfumes have no practical use, and I hate smelling many of those, do you desire all fragrances be taken off shelves because the scent can harm people who are allergic to those chemicals? I agree that people should NOT be able to smoke in TRULY public places, but don't take rights away from business owners so you can make the place more comfortable for you, while making it far less enjoyable for the majority. I don't smoke anymore, but I wouldn't try to take away rights of those that still do.
@papermermaid second hand smokeee murderrr second hand smoke a person can be killing killing someone without knowing itt without knowingg itt second hand smokeee god watchess all trulyy KARMA REMEMBER trulyy god is the knower of all god watchess all karmaaa remember truly what i said im not lieing karmaa im not kieing karma believe me or not i am i am telling the truth peace see the thing is people want to do un justice make FUN of others

There are much cooler ways to die than the way most of us die. Doesn't have anything to do with weather or not government should be telling business owners what people can or can not do in their own restaurant/bar.This is about freedom and our supposed rights as Americans. As a disabled Vet, I take that seriously.
This isn't about your opinion, its about rights as americans. Are you going to a page about how death squads are wrong to comment about the clothes they were wearing? This issue is a lot more important than personal opinions. What do you expect when you post waaaay off topic?
i'm off topic? hello, but the first line of your first post was the rebuttle to my first statement. now you go on about government regulation and "death squads" and how i dont care about them? I never even STATED my opinon, and yet you keep saying that my opinion is isnt true? what?
Cigarette smoke makes me cough and makes my clothes smell bad.
I worked as a waiter in a restaurant for years. I wouldn't have been able to keep my job if I worked around smoke and kept coughing while delivering food.
You want to smoke fine. I think there should be smoking bars and restaurants that have to apply for a license to allow its patrons to smoke. And there should be a limit on how many of those there are in a community.
A community near me (Webster Groves, MO) had up for vote to outlaw smoking in the home. When asked how they were going to enforce it, the response was for children to report their parents. It failed. But WOW!
@wilberswilbers any parent who smokes in the home is an asshole anyway. my dad had the manners to smoke outside. if you don't, or if your parents didn't, then you, or your parents, are simply rude and need to learn some manners.
h20philter: While i agree that I hate smoking and it is terrible, it is making me mad that the government is banning smoking because it's bad for the smoker. Next let's have the government come in our house and force us to wear clothes in the shower cause nudity is unethical and then outlaw cheeseburgers because they cause health problems. I hate smoking and hate being around it, but if there is one thing I hate more it's the govt banning the right of someone to smoke cause it's bad for them.
Or arrest you for having sex a certain way (actually illegal in some states....). I agree, since I quit smoking, I can smell it again, and it stinks, and I feel better for not smoking, But that doesn't give the me or the Gov. the right to restrict business owners of their chosen customer base. I can't believe how many people are willing to restrict the rights of others for the illusion of safety and their own personal comfort.
Yes they do. But it doesn't give anyone the right to take rights away from other individuals or business owners who choose to do something we don't like.
But even then, who gives a shit. Smokers = stinkers. Enjoy your addiction without ruining the rest of us the non addicts. You made the choice to smoke, don't make me pay for it.
If you wish to smoke and blend with the rest of us, do us a favor, after the smoke, take a shower, brush your teeth and change to fresh clothing.. you stinkers you!
Really, are you THAT conceded and selfish? What about the people who don't like the smell of your shampoo/cologne? Are you going to do the same so they don't have to put up with that? Are you going to start walking to work so people don't have deal with your pollution? Our rights are a bigger issue than what you like or dislike! If you want total dictatorship, then move to cuba/russia.
One undeniable fact is that smokers stink and they stink you up. If there was some addictive habit like covering yourself in horses piss that these addicts would surround your day to day live like sitting next to you in the restaurant and going to the movies and etc. it'd be horrible for all non horse piss scent lovers.
The reality of the situation is simple, smokers = addicts and if you can tax addiction.. cha CHING! The government is nothing but a pusher in this case.
I guess its up to the customer what a business owner is allowed to do with their own business? Going to a different restaurant too hard? Do you really need to take away rights from other people to fill your opinion of what smells good or bad? I quit over a year ago, but I will never try to force other people out of their rights just to make myself comfortable, that's just selfish and against the core values this country is supposed to stand for. As a disabled Veteran, that is important to me.
As far as right for "business owner". You should brush up on legalities behind this statement. A business is a fictional entity created by the government. It has no "RIGHTS" granted by same rights that you keep quoting. Business owner a human created by god is entitled to his freedom. A business however, is entitled to whatever freedom's granted by it's creator which is most certainly not God.
Its something that starts early so raise the age to 25. This would make it so people are less inclined to smoke and therefore it wont be such a problem in the future. I know people sneak and smoke but we safeguard this until a person turns 25 then we wont have as many people smoking.
Hey, that's not true. I care and not because it makes me sick or damages my health but because i know a lot of nice people that want to quit but cant. Making cigarettes a little less dangerous isn't the answer but making them a little less available may be and making them off limits until you're at least 25 would help. It has been said that people, once they reach 25, are less likely to start drinking and I believe this would be true for smoking.
These antismoking authortarians make me sick. If a bar owner permits smoking, and you are afraid of second-hand smoke, THEN DON'T FUCKING GO INTO THEIR BAR!
Your boycott of their bar would have spoke in volumes. However, since these authortarians can't convince people of not smoking by persuasion, they force people do it by coercion.
I find that antismoking advocates get upset at the person beside them that smokes, but find no fault in the truck that exerts alot of CO2 emission. Sad
Hey,smoking is bad; not only does it cause cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other disease but it's addictive. It's so addictive that its one of the most controlling forces in a person's life. Smokers have actually convinced themselves that they can't partake in their favorite activities smoke free.Resturants going out of business please; you stop going because you can't smoke without leaving. Why not be honest. The addiction means more than anything including your health and other people?
they have the RIGHT to smoke at these activities too. Yes it is harmful, and addictive but where do people spend their time, money and energy??? They spend it at anti-smoking propoganda (which doesn't work) and trying to ban smoking wherever they can...instead they should try to help smokers by finding ways to make cigarettes less dangerous...they should also spend time on addiction counseling...yes there is counseling but 90% of effort is in propoganda...no one cares once u start...
Hey, it's only a right if it doesn't interfere or cause detriment to others and their rights. We don't have any stand alone bars here in my state. They made allowances for private clubs. The reason that smokers don't want it banned is because they're addicted and the reason non smokers don't want it banned is because they either drink and fear their watering whole will dry up or they are afraid of what will be taken away in the future. There isn't a good for you cigarette because smoke is toxic
I don't know what a stand alone bar is. I do believe that it is up to the owners of the bar to decide. they own the private property...a restaurant or bar is not public property, it is private property. they make the rules b/c they own it. they can throw u out or refuse service so they should allow smoking if they want...most will listen to complaints too. I know it may b toxic and they don't want bans b/c they r addicted...but is ANYONE making significan efforts to help addictions???
If you have to keep getting up, going outside in the cold, rain, heat, wind etc rather than just sitting down and enjoying your surroundings then youll probably get really tired and realize that there has to be a better way. You cant smoke in movie theaters and people go their and have a great time.
Hey, (that's my way of saying howdy or what's up) A stand alone bar is a saloon; I guess. A place where people go to just bend their elbow. I think people are trying to help people with additions to cope. One way is to make it less acceptable and another way is to make it less accessible. Once the ban is in place and people are use to being where they can't smoke maybe some will even be encouraged to quit or to smoke a little less.
what evidence the EPA evidence??? If secondhand smoke kills at the SAME rate as primary smoke, maybe 5,000 ppl at the most die from seconhand smoke a year...and i am probably overshooting it...it is more like 2500-3000...what they do is take every single person who lived with a smoker and died from lung cancer, and ASSUMED that it was from secondhand smoke...mortality rate among smokers is less than .8 percent per yr, but somehow secondhand smoke kills close to 5% of ppl exposed per yr...
I am not either and i say smoking bans are full of shit. I DO NOT smoke and I ABHOR it like P&T but I am very libertarian and support people's rights. I agree somewhat with the not harming others part, that they shouldn't deliberately smoke in people's face...but ppl have the freedom of choice to move away & if they can't they have NO right to take away freedom from smokers...Also, in restaurants that r PRIVATELY OWNED, there should b no laws b/c of people's basic rights in the US to property.
Well same thing goes for smokers they have the choice to smoke some other place to . In fact non smokers who would have to move away, don't they in a way lose there freedoom to remain where they are?
I can agree with you that if owners of an establishment whant's smokers in there bars etc it should be up to them if the staff thinks it's ok. These are hard times and people might have to take jobs even though they really don't whant to be second hand smokers.
i understand that. I believe in personal responsibility though. the government is not our babysitters. we are not children. It is up to EITHER ONE of them to walk away. the point is, making a law against it is a pre-emptive strike against smokers. it is taking away the choice of both and deciding for them. In a country that emphasizes freedom, i want the freedom to be treated as an adult and not be babysat by my government. its not the government's job, it is ppls job to b responsible.
Yeah well I don't give a rat's ass in hell whether or not it's harmful -- if a guy stands right beside me at the bus stop, obnoxiously smoking right by me, I GET PISSED. Because that smoke smells DISGUSTING.
Right, I can walk away from the smoker, if I'm standing in a ticket queue, for instance, or waiting for the bus. WAIT NO, I can't! Because I have to stay in line. Why can't smokers simply position themselves DOWNWIND, instead of upwind where everybody else in the place will have to inhale their smoke?
@Nizingur how are you getting second hand smoke ina outdoor PARK when soemone is smoking 30 or ,more feet away from you?how can JUSTIFY a law banning OUTDOOR smoking?
@DrRocksotheClown I never said anything about second-hand smoke, and nothing about thirty feet, but when I'm stuck in a queue right behind someone who's smoking (note loo side, by the way) and I can't move or lose my place in the queue, that's just NOT FUN! I don't appreciate the smell of it. Period.
@liquidminds actually, if there is a law banning smoking, you'll have to live with it in the presence or absence of a law banning perfume, that's the nature of a law ;)
@gilraen690 fuck u asshole ppl have a right do smoke so untill its illeagal kiss my ass. O an next time ur at the bus stop n some is smoking next to u i hope he blows the smoke right in ur face n tells u to fuck off
It's a shame more libertarians don't smoke in the company of other libertarians. Dying of cancer would be helpful for the rest of us, while they're complaining of nanny states and shit.
not real smoking. They make fake cigarettes for movies and such. If you see smoking on TV or movies, its those fake ones. From a buddy who tried them for a movie(background extra),he said they are waaaay worse than real cigarettes in taste, and have no nicotine. If you notice, he doesn't make any big inhales (as if he were really smoking for the drug) either.
Second hand smoke doesn't just cause cancer. It makes you sick. At least it makes me sick. It makes me wanna vomit. Even as a kid i had the same feeling and i knew it was bad and i was only a kid. It always made me sick.
Wow. I knew Pen & Teller were pretty light on research (hey, it's a comedy show) but... That's just bullshit. Even Wiki cites like 30 different studies on various harms of passive smoking, couldn't they be arsed to check that?..
and so my point is proven. racial slurs have now been used. didnt need to be a psychic to figure that out. and i find it funny how you comment on a video without actually watching it. you have no say here
Lmfao, gays aren't a race. Jesus christ. I did watch the video by the way, or at least skimmed through it. Not that it matters though, any argument opposing public smoking bans is surely absurd.
technically they are. well if you watched the video then you would have seent he scientific facts showed that second hand smoke does 0% harm! and any argument opposing it is not absurd its opinion. but im sure only your opinion counts in your own head
Wrong, retard. They didn't have concise data that showed it did cause harm, but they also didn't have data that proved it was safe. Plus, who cares about cancer? Cigarettes smell like shit and the smell clings to clothes and rooms and whatever. I don't want to smell your shit so get the fuck outside with it you dirty faggots
XD wow you called me a faggot XD is that the depths of your mental prowess that you act like you know everything and talk like you can save the world with all theese stats and facts but you cant come up with anything better than "faggot" XD 38 years old and still cant come up with a decent insult XD not only a fail troll but a failure at life apperently XD without that computer you have no life XD keep being an internet tough guy. you would never stand a chance against me XD
I hate this fat faggot, every episode is a piece of awful. all they do is oversimplify arguments and say "fuck" and "bullshit" a lot. A great way to appeal to goober morons that can't look beyond the obvious. So what if second hand smoke doesn't cause cancer? It smells like shit, and burns your eyes. I don't like having my clothes smell like shit and I shouldn't have to have it happen because some tool can't go outside to have a smoke.
I wouldn;t go that far. But I should have the right to NOT Have to breathe your damn stinky smoke. Second hand smoke may or may not cause cancer, but it stinks and makes me cough.
i have a friend with pretty bad asthma, he can not be anywhere close to the smoker section of a restaurant, as it is possible to give him an asthma attack.
i fucking hate the smoking ban. and out of al the places they tried it out the first time it had to be Ireland and its pubs, that was like telling an author not to write. they were going to get opposition but of course the dumb americans would rather use another country as a guinea pig for there opinions to be tested before they try it themselves. dirty snobby bastards
the smoking ban is great! I don't have to smell shitty cigarettes when I go to bars, restaurants, and other public places. Its great a fuck all you dumb fucks that think its wrong.
oh no not you. i remember alot of your comments on various videos. im ashamed that you even have Dublin in your name. for anyone reading this comment please let me remind you that "TheEarlOfDublin" does not actually live in ireland and that any racial slurs against people should be taken with a pinch of salt. stop pretending to be someone your not in order to destroy the image of a nation you do not belong to
I believe people should do what they want. But I don't believe people should be able to smoke in public. It's the face that you are putting peoples lives in danger. It may not be having a huge impact on their health but it still is affecting it. And people not smoking should not have to go out of there way to be protected from the smoke. The smokers are the one choosing to do that and should take care of where they smoke. But, alas, how the world is no one cares if they hurt someone else.
It's not about if it's bad or not. It's about the business owners right to determine if they allow smoking. I know some people that want to fight when they drink whiskey. That's putting people in danger. Should be ban whiskey drinking in public?

Kuba022 3 weeks ago
@Kuba022 Apparently you didn't watch the vid at all. Bureaucracies are not a place where you find sound science. Your whole list is nothing but bureaucracies. Just because a bureaucrat says something doesn't mean it's true. Didn't the EU recently require all bottled water to carry a labels declaring that water doesn't hydrate a person? Did it make it true? Science is not politics, even though most people confuse the two.
OriginalTexcalibur 2 weeks ago
@OriginalTexcalibur Not enough for you? Fine, then google: "secondhand smoke bibliography". You will find an extensive list of peer-reviewed studies of various effects associated with secondhand smoking. There are tons of evidence that it's harmful. Ignoring all of that makes you, well, the ignorant.
Kuba022 2 weeks ago
@Kuba022 Actually I have no problem with the science, and already knew it exists. I was just correcting ignorant thinking. I guess you just want to argue, because I NEVER ONCE DENIED YOUR POINT. I just denied their ignorance in where "facts" come from. Geez, people!
OriginalTexcalibur 2 weeks ago
@OriginalTexcalibur Those organizations didn't just arbitrarily decide that seconhand smoke is bad. If you are familiar with the research, you should know that. They didn't do it "just 'cause". Their facts come from research. Plenty of research.
Penn said there isn't a single study anywhere offering conclusive proof that breathing secondhand smoke causes cancer. This is BULLSHIT. As much as I like the guy, in this video he's full of it.
Kuba022 2 weeks ago
@Kuba022 I agree totally on your assessment of this show, but your statement about "plenty of research" doesn't hold water when you compare it to the EU's new policies. (pun intended). Scientist themselves should be scrutinized, but I never take the word of a bureaucrat without scientists who have independently confirmed their results through peer review. Penn and Teller are just sensationalizing everything they do just to get ratings.
OriginalTexcalibur 2 weeks ago

Also, second hand smoke is still unhealthy. Don't believe me? Smoke around a part of your house with a desktop computer for a month. You'll see a layer of tar growing within the chassis. The grossest shit in the world.

the only beef i have with smoking is it smells bad
the only beef i have with restaurants is that their non-smoking area is just a sectioned off part of the smoking area
like, somehow that bad smelling smoke is prevented by an invisible barrier from wafting over to the non-smoking side, or that when it does it suddenly dosen't smell?
we know that what we taste and what we smell are strongly linked
if i'm eating a sandwich and i don't smoke, i don't want it to taste different
the sections are BS

Wow so they're saying that if you don't have cancer secondhand smoking hasn't done anything to you? The show is funny but it's so freaking biased. I don't give a fuck what the evidence is. I know it's unhealthy and that's FACT. Smoking should be illegal everywhere.

The public is a wide range of different people . Not just the way you want things that is what your house is for.

MAG315 8 months ago
@MAG315,
Just because someone's biased, doesn't mean he's wrong or lying.
MegaAstrodude 7 months ago
Therefore, if the natural, necessary, harmless, non-invassive act of urination should be banned in public, for the sole reason of being offensive, why then shouldn't smoking be banned, simply because people find it invasive and offensive? Add to that even the slim possibility of it being unhealthy. One other thing, the right to piss where you stand is a God given right, the cavemen did it, smoking is not a right or a need, it is a luxury.
TdotSoul 1 year ago

TdotSoul 1 year ago
to consume it with you.
TdotSoul 1 year ago
alcohol is another such substance, but at least with alcohol you aren't forcing others to consume it with you.

JackevAll 7 months ago
@JackevAll haha you're a dumbass, I hope the radiation neutered you. None of the examples you mentioned above are anything like a cigarette, cigarettes have absolutely no function in society whatsover. Hey I like the taste.
organichealthycoffee 1 year ago

Wake up.
ashdavcz 1 year ago
I don't smoke, and this show has convinced me that second-hand smoking doesn't cause diseases.
But it's still very annoying when you're at a restaurant and smoke is blown to your table. You're having a good time with your family and then you start getting smoke through your throat.
It's the same as if someone would be addicted to screaming. Even if it's a persons right to scream, you shouldn't be allowed to scream at the top of your lungs in public places. You annoy people yoou don't know.

360player6595 1 year ago
If someone did that, its assault. Just like if they spit in your face. This issue has nothing to do with that, and is a discussion about our rights as Americans, and rights as business owners to decide who they serve. The entire episode was about rights, and like 4 lines were about the harmfulness of second hand smoke, cause it wasn't the issue being debated. ANY combusted carcinogen is harmful to us, even perfumes can harm you if you breath them in. Should we ban all perfumes(deodorants ect..)?
theangrygimp 1 year ago
Any way you cut it, pollution and cologne and etc does not amount to the effect any sort of smoke in closed places has on non smokers.
I don't agree with bans of any kind, I am saying that smokers in general are inconsiderate. 1 cigarette in a closed restaurant pretty much kills my taste buds. I can't enjoy the food I paid for. And why? Because some feel that they should smoke after a coffee. I understand what you're saying, however the smell of smoke is pretty stagnant.
denisbetsi 1 year ago
If someone wanted to park their cars indoors where you eat and leave them running would you be okay with that because people have the right to do whatever they want?
Also as far as cologne remark, it'd take a lot of cologne spilled everywhere to spread rapidly through the restaurant and effect your taste buds.
Besides at some point no one was smoking, then someone made a conscious decision to smoke, then have the balls to tell me to go home if I don't like it because they have the right?
denisbetsi 1 year ago

As a disabled Veteran, that is important to me.
theangrygimp 1 year ago

TheMidnightBell07 2 years ago
Hey, that's not true. I care and not because it makes me sick or damages my health but because i know a lot of nice people that want to quit but cant. Making cigarettes a little less dangerous isn't the answer but making them a little less available may be and making them off limits until you're at least 25 would help. It has been said that people, once they reach 25, are less likely to start drinking and I believe this would be true for smoking.

Smoking fucks up your lungs yes. Smells like shit yes.
Causes lung cancer? Well unconfirmed.

Sad
hollyhoodjoe123 2 years ago 2
What does CO2 really have to do with smoking?
Isnt it true that producing cigaretts ad to CO2 pollution? Not to think of all the poison used at the tobacco fields...
I see you're point accept for the CO2 part ;)

Hey,smoking is bad; not only does it cause cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other disease but it's addictive. It's so addictive that its one of the most controlling forces in a person's life. Smokers have actually convinced themselves that they can't partake in their favorite activities smoke free.Resturants going out of business please; you stop going because you can't smoke without leaving. Why not be honest. The addiction means more than anything including your health and other people?
TheMidnightBell07 2 years ago
they have the RIGHT to smoke at these activities too. Yes it is harmful, and addictive but where do people spend their time, money and energy??? They spend it at anti-smoking propoganda (which doesn't work) and trying to ban smoking wherever they can...instead they should try to help smokers by finding ways to make cigarettes less dangerous...they should also spend time on addiction counseling...yes there is counseling but 90% of effort is in propoganda...no one cares once u start...
slev09 2 years ago
Hey, it's only a right if it doesn't interfere or cause detriment to others and their rights. We don't have any stand alone bars here in my state. They made allowances for private clubs. The reason that smokers don't want it banned is because they're addicted and the reason non smokers don't want it banned is because they either drink and fear their watering whole will dry up or they are afraid of what will be taken away in the future. There isn't a good for you cigarette because smoke is toxic
TheMidnightBell07 2 years ago
I don't know what a stand alone bar is. I do believe that it is up to the owners of the bar to decide. they own the private property...a restaurant or bar is not public property, it is private property. they make the rules b/c they own it. they can throw u out or refuse service so they should allow smoking if they want...most will listen to complaints too. I know it may b toxic and they don't want bans b/c they r addicted...but is ANYONE making significan efforts to help addictions???
slev09 2 years ago
If you have to keep getting up, going outside in the cold, rain, heat, wind etc rather than just sitting down and enjoying your surroundings then youll probably get really tired and realize that there has to be a better way. You cant smoke in movie theaters and people go their and have a great time.
TheMidnightBell07 2 years ago
Hey, (that's my way of saying howdy or what's up) A stand alone bar is a saloon; I guess. A place where people go to just bend their elbow. I think people are trying to help people with additions to cope. One way is to make it less acceptable and another way is to make it less accessible. Once the ban is in place and people are use to being where they can't smoke maybe some will even be encouraged to quit or to smoke a little less.

Penn & Teller are so full of it!!
Bet some tobacco company paid them to tell people this shit!!
Penn & Teller are retards. Second hand smoking is harmful and there is scientific proof that this is the case!!

They changed their mind.. see the video "Penn & Teller Second Hand Smoke Correction".

Just watched the video. When you can admit your wrong, i think that adds credibility
speddie2 2 years ago
what evidence the EPA evidence??? If secondhand smoke kills at the SAME rate as primary smoke, maybe 5,000 ppl at the most die from seconhand smoke a year...and i am probably overshooting it...it is more like 2500-3000...what they do is take every single person who lived with a smoker and died from lung cancer, and ASSUMED that it was from secondhand smoke...mortality rate among smokers is less than .8 percent per yr, but somehow secondhand smoke kills close to 5% of ppl exposed per yr...
slev09 2 years ago
There is a kind of well known psycological fact, and that is that people have a tendency to find and interpret facts in a way that suites them.
So those pro smoking will find facts supporting there cause and vice versa.
How ever is it really right to risk other peoples health at all for you're one indulgence?
I dont care if people smoke just keep it at places where it doesent harm others!
mondosrah 2 years ago
I am not either and i say smoking bans are full of shit. I DO NOT smoke and I ABHOR it like P&T but I am very libertarian and support people's rights. I agree somewhat with the not harming others part, that they shouldn't deliberately smoke in people's face...but ppl have the freedom of choice to move away & if they can't they have NO right to take away freedom from smokers...Also, in restaurants that r PRIVATELY OWNED, there should b no laws b/c of people's basic rights in the US to property.
slev09 2 years ago
Well same thing goes for smokers they have the choice to smoke some other place to . In fact non smokers who would have to move away, don't they in a way lose there freedoom to remain where they are?
I can agree with you that if owners of an establishment whant's smokers in there bars etc it should be up to them if the staff thinks it's ok. These are hard times and people might have to take jobs even though they really don't whant to be second hand smokers.
It's all a question of philosophy ;)
mondosrah 2 years ago
i understand that. I believe in personal responsibility though. the government is not our babysitters. we are not children. It is up to EITHER ONE of them to walk away. the point is, making a law against it is a pre-emptive strike against smokers. it is taking away the choice of both and deciding for them. In a country that emphasizes freedom, i want the freedom to be treated as an adult and not be babysat by my government. its not the government's job, it is ppls job to b responsible.
slev09 2 years ago 4
Yeah well I don't give a rat's ass in hell whether or not it's harmful -- if a guy stands right beside me at the bus stop, obnoxiously smoking right by me, I GET PISSED. Because that smoke smells DISGUSTING.
You're disgusting, smokers.
gilraen690 2 years ago 2
then walk away from the smoker
bueniviris 2 years ago
Right, I can walk away from the smoker, if I'm standing in a ticket queue, for instance, or waiting for the bus. WAIT NO, I can't! Because I have to stay in line. Why can't smokers simply position themselves DOWNWIND, instead of upwind where everybody else in the place will have to inhale their smoke?
LN1990 2 years ago
@gilraen690 move or tell him to move. Don't sit there silently fuming and then demand the government do something about it.
xsvdudex 1 year ago
@xsvdudex How easy do you think it is to get a smoker to move when you ask it to?
Nizingur 1 year ago
@Nizingur The fact that you just referred to a smoker as "it" is all I need to know
xsvdudex 1 year ago
@Nizingur how are you getting second hand smoke ina outdoor PARK when soemone is smoking 30 or ,more feet away from you?how can JUSTIFY a law banning OUTDOOR smoking?
DrRocksotheClown 1 year ago
@DrRocksotheClown I never said anything about second-hand smoke, and nothing about thirty feet, but when I'm stuck in a queue right behind someone who's smoking (note loo side, by the way) and I can't move or lose my place in the queue, that's just NOT FUN! I don't appreciate the smell of it. Period.
Nizingur 1 year ago
@gilraen690: I see your point... I feel the same way about people using perfume.
I just hate those artificial flowery and spicy smells.
I wish they just would light a fucking cigar.. smells a lot better.
I accept public bans for smoking as soon as there is a public ban for perfume.
Until you manage to get that one through, we both have to arrange with the unpleasant smell.
liquidminds 1 year ago
@liquidminds actually, if there is a law banning smoking, you'll have to live with it in the presence or absence of a law banning perfume, that's the nature of a law ;)
TdotSoul 1 year ago
@TdotSoul that's the nice thing about human-made laws. They can be changed.
I only have to live with the laws of physics, they work everywhere.
liquidminds 1 year ago
@liquidminds sure they can be changed, but probably not by you! If the majority speaks, and they don't like smoking, then you're out of luck!

I have seen teller Smoking in a few skits, I was wondering does he smoke or is he just smoking for the skits?
wnghanglow 2 years ago
not real smoking. They make fake cigarettes for movies and such. If you see smoking on TV or movies, its those fake ones. From a buddy who tried them for a movie(background extra),he said they are waaaay worse than real cigarettes in taste, and have no nicotine. If you notice, he doesn't make any big inhales (as if he were really smoking for the drug) either.
theangrygimp 1 year ago
Second hand smoke doesn't just cause cancer. It makes you sick. At least it makes me sick. It makes me wanna vomit. Even as a kid i had the same feeling and i knew it was bad and i was only a kid. It always made me sick.

It's a perfect place to start one's research assuming you actually know how it works.
More importantly, nowadays it's the prime destination for any fact-checking even if it's not the first, just like Google.

Lmfao, gays aren't a race. Jesus christ. I did watch the video by the way, or at least skimmed through it. Not that it matters though, any argument opposing public smoking bans is surely absurd.
TheEarlOfDublin 2 years ago
technically they are. well if you watched the video then you would have seent he scientific facts showed that second hand smoke does 0% harm! and any argument opposing it is not absurd its opinion. but im sure only your opinion counts in your own head
Irishsoldier1916 2 years ago
Wrong, retard. They didn't have concise data that showed it did cause harm, but they also didn't have data that proved it was safe. Plus, who cares about cancer? I hate this fat faggot, every episode is a piece of awful. all they do is oversimplify arguments and say "fuck" and "bullshit" a lot. A great way to appeal to goober morons that can't look beyond the obvious. So what if second hand smoke doesn't cause cancer? It smells like shit, and burns your eyes. I don't like having my clothes smell like shit and I shouldn't have to have it happen because some tool can't go outside to have a smoke.

i fucking hate the smoking ban. and out of al the places they tried it out the first time it had to be Ireland and its pubs, that was like telling an author not to write. they were going to get opposition but of course the dumb americans would rather use another country as a guinea pig for there opinions to be tested before they try it themselves. dirty snobby bastards

Penn and Teller even admitted now that the evidence DOES support the conclusion that SHS is unhealthy to others. Check out The Amazing Meeting 3
dlandon2000 2 years ago
It's not about if it's bad or not. It's about the business owners right to determine if they allow smoking. I know some people that want to fight when they drink whiskey. That's putting people in danger. Should be ban whiskey drinking in public?
