As a Paramedic I also agree that the boring things are what most people will suffer the most from. Bad water, spoiled food IE not refrigerated, bacteria in foods are what is going to take down most people. Also the nutrition intake will not be there for a lot of people. poor diet will be the downfall for a lot.
I would recommend that everyone have a Peterson's Field Guide to Medicinal Plants, and one for edible plants too. So many basic mineral and vitamin deficiencies can be prevented with a small amount of plants harvested free from the wild.
Pine needle tea is very high in vitamin C...more than enough to prevent scurvy and boost your immune system. Just pour hot (NOT boiling) water over fresh pine needles and let it steep. Boiling water will degrade the vitamin C. It's good for you, and it tastes like a forest. I love it with a scone or muffin in the morning. :)

I see very few preppers worry about the real stuff. Medical and toiletries. I'm looking into snake bite kits as it is a real problem here in Florida. I have walked up on a rattle snake 5 times at my place in the woods.

I'm sorry if you are a fan of hers.. But, I have asked her about where to find dr's that would order my inhalers. She says get antibiotics. Dr's have to order that. She gave me no answer. I don't think you should be advising people to be prepared when you don't have answers. Seriously! You need Doctors to get your subscriptions ahead of the crisis time. Does she know dr's that would do that?
@Absynthe12 First you do not need a MD to get subscriptions, I get offers all the time in the mail or on youtube you just push a button. Now on prescriptions there are ways to get antibiotics. First you can travel outside of the U.S. or you can mail order them over the internet (use trusted sites.) some people will get them from a vet. Or if you become friends with your MD you can get some. Think outside the norm. think like a prepper!
Once I was in the hospital and suddenly I took a turn for the nurse.... I mean worse (W. C. Fields joke). Chuckle chuckle. Maybe not. // Just a reminder, I went and got my boy a tetanus shot 2 days ago when he cut his hand climbing a hurricane fence. I've been told there is no cure. It's highly preventable. It doesn't take but just a scratch. Even if one is not that active, an ounce of prevention....
Good points you bring. I do disagree on the dressing point. I would recommend long term dressing that could last longer. Cost more but can be kept easier. Also, as a backup i would look into maybe cotton bandage like use in the 50'. They could propably reusable, on the same person of course. The last point, I need to do more research but sounds interesting avenue. On the nutrition side, protein sounds like the most difficult to add. i would store protein powder.
@TheMountainRN ...I think that's an understatement. They cost waaaaaaaay more. If you're talking about some of the silver-impregnanted alginate dressings, they cost about ten times the price of standard cotton dressings on the price point I found. I think they're FANTASTIC, don't get me wrong..but most folks will probably do better to use that same money for a wider variety of supplies. Of course, If I won the lottery, I might request payment in Acticoat dressings ;)
@ThePatriotNurse Well will have to work on to prove you wrong.lol I didn't do the math but I am sure on a moderate exudate wound, the benefits cost would be better. I am looking at upgrading my FAK to those dressing. Cause one dressing can stay so long and with a decrease chance of complication. A bid dressing change not only would increase the time of healing but be resource demanding. I believe there a way to make it economical and effective. Since winning at the lottery not really an option.

@DEMCAD Israeli dressings are for life threatening rapid blood loss under fire. they are expensive and do ONE thing very well. a few for your blow out mobile kit is great but they are nothing more than an abd pad and ace wrap. this vid is on wound care... it takes weeks or months to heal a wound. cheep and plenty "stock and trade" supplies will get the job done because of shear volume and low cost where specialized dressings wont.because you cant afford them and they cant fit odd places.
PN, southernprepper1 is considering doing an emergency medical series. I find it interesting that you two are talking separately on the same idea at the same time. Perhaps you and he can synchronize your efforts and co-produce an amazingly synergistic prepper medical training resource!
Why not! I think it would be incredibly valuable. Think about it, won't you.
@bee13zz Bear Flag Trading is doing an Emergency Medical Series too. The guys over there are both Medics and RhinoDoc was a Navy Corpsmen. Check it out
dehydrated food is great to store. long expiration dates and relatively cheap. lots of survival sites sell dehydration meats, milks, fats etc. fruits and veggies can be grown with cheap seed kits running around 20bucks for a decent variety. all of this is also lighter in weight than other foods. a good water filter is also an important investment. kataden makes great filters. small durable and reliable. get a good one! have collapsing water containers with water preservative drops.
I Have a question, Those weight gainer drinks, protein drinks, muscle drinks etc.... the powdered ones that come in the large containers. Would that be a good thing to store? They are packed with so much stuff, I can't help to think that keeping a few of those around would be a good thing. Curious on your thoughts. Thanks.
More troops were killed by illness then by bullets during, the Revolution, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. As a Corpsman we were not only trained in Combat med we were trained in preventative med aka bug chasers.
@ItsTime2WakeUp The Navy has an internal "CDC" that will look at each area of deployment. They have a great understanding of what type of Diseases are present in the area of operation they are sending troops. Then they give out vaccinations. The important part is knowing the active "bugs" in the area. For an example in the United States Lime Disease is more prevalent in the east then in the southwest. So if you are out on the east coast you should take tick prevention methods southwest not so
Nutrition - My hot button! GET YOURSELF SOME SPROUTING SEEDS! In 3-5 days you can have fresh bean sprouts (the kind the Chinese use is called "mung" bean) and alfalfa sprouts are fluffy and green make a great lettuce substitute. Many folks don't know that radishes, lettuce are can be grown on a windowsill in 35 days, so prepare! Canned tomatoes are essential, & pineapple, peaches, & applesauce are cheap. Bake w/ raisins, apricots, figs, prunes & NUTS = vits, fiber & protein. Thanks PN!
@TheAmericanprepper If you look through her videos I believe she did one on ORS (Oral Rehydration Solutions). I made a whole bunch of them to use in the case of diarrhea and other stomach ailments that might cause dehydration. I believe she said not to use things to stop the diarrhea because it would prevent the body from expelling the toxins and poisons but to rather rehydrate the body quickly with an ORS. I added Koolaid to mine to make them more flavorable for children.
Great vid, very important points. I hear people all the time say "oh I've got a big bag of beans and rice and my guns, I'll be fine". I worry about those people, cause their gonna come knocking at our door! I thought it was great you mentioned the sheets at goodwill. I just picked up a couple at my local goodwill and cleaned and sterilized them to put up for a wrol emergency situation.
store 3x or as much as possible of anyhting you might need.
water filters, specially portable ones, are not high volume.
Not all water needs to be treated the same, Some may need to be boiled/shocked, filtered, then boiled again. pool chlorine, and a 55gal drum, with cloth, sand, charcoal, and pebbles on top for example, and some water may just need 6 hours in solar radiation.
Boiling does not make clean water, only dead water, so it should be boiled, and filtered
PatriotNurse~is there anything out there that could be used to get by if a person runs out of Blood Thinners/Warrafin? What about for High Blood Pressure meds if they were to run out, is there anything that a person might be able to use to get by without it?
@ItsTime2WakeUp Another vote for aspirin. Naturally, though, I would recommend pomegranate (great if you can grow them in your area) and cinnamon. Pomegranate is great for blood pressure. Cinnamon helps with thinning your blood, lowering your blood pressure, and lowering your heart rate.
As far as the bandages go, would female sanitary napkins be an acceptable substitute? I have no idea how the price would compare, but they seem like they would be easy to store and versatile for wound care.
Hey nurse Thank you for al your video's i just lost everything in the flood here in broome county NY. Including my pets , cloths everything . the water was over my roof and house is full of sewage mud. i was a minor prepper but couldnt manage to get anything out. in time. I followed some of your recomendations and tryed to who got a minor cut on her foot the 1st day back to her house. she wouldnt listen to me and get it cleaned. it was ccoverd in mud. next day was in er with blood infection. :(
Set a bowl of beans and rice on the the table with every supper, and have a few bite. They make a better addition to the meal, than a meal. You'll save on food, allowing more resources for prepping. Also, your body will become accustomed to processing a food you may be dependent on in a SHTF situation. It's a tried and true practice in rural OK since before the Dust Bowl, and helped us greatly when Daddy died suddenly in 1964. Thank God they put back food. Thanks again from Indian Country Farms.
Good thing the last time I was abducted by aliens I was able to swipe a whole case of "Food Pills"from them before they sent me back home. You take just one pill and it last a whole month. You don't have to eat anything for a month then just take another one and your good to go.
another option for bandages for people on a budget is tampons from dollar stores... i am a man but stocked up on tampons from local dollar store....a 6 pack of tampons for one dollar is a great deal and if you have a serious cut they are very absorbant and clean
another tip for preppers is stock up on multivitamins....you will need some vitamins to supplement the rice and beans...LOL
I went to wallgreens and got botles of 400 at 75%off...3 dollars out the door!
This is exactly why I watch your channel and subscribe- because of all the useful info and wonderful insight you have to offer. It has really helped me in realizing the holes I need to fill. Thank you.
PS: for vitamin supplements, I read an article about the FDA wanting to ban only but a few of them because they can't profit from a vitamin. We all know who makes up the board members of the FDA so it would be wise to store a lot of vitamins too.
Generally speaking (sources vary but whoever's numbers you use they will be close to this) in the Civil War non battle casualties accounted for 2/3 of all casualties. The 1860's for sure counts as a grid down type environment. Pay attention to this wonderful lady when she says you are more likely to die from the more pedestrian things vs. the high speed low drag trauma related stuff.
@sarguy350 pre WWII back to the beginning of time more soldiers in war time were killed by disease than combat. I'm not sure of the exact number but I think I read somewhere (I think "The Great Influenza" by Thom Barry) that like 80% of US deaths were influenza deaths. People don't realize the vast scope of this stuff. You're right on Sarguy and PatriotNurse has her thumb on the picture.
you are a plethora of knowledge my friend.... thank you once again! hopefully i get into the EMT program this next semester so ill know how to deal with gunshot wounds, but that will probably be covered more with ALS in the EMT-P coarses..
but i been hearing alot of ppl on forums talking about carrying tampons in their kits for gunshot wounds to plug an exit wound or an entry wound that doesnt exit... what are your thoughts on this?
Your videos are always great and informative; there's always that one more thing on the medical front that's worth mentioning. I <3 you PatriotNurse. :-D
Have you done a video on how to help a person recover from #1 serious starvation #2 serious water deprivation. I remember seeing the shows on the concentration camps and how people died from getting fed too fast and too much water too fast. So if someone walks into your camp or you find someone in these conditions. What do you do to help them recover. Thanks!
A good guide for survival medicine that is free is( Miles Stair's survival shop survival and Austere Medicine) check it out you can Google the manual on line for Free!
I've been subbed for a year or more. If I could suggest videos where you can demo all these things your speak about instead of explaining 10 things in 5mins? I have combat medical training...but not the "boaring stuff". Can you get a assistant to help you show techniques or visual aids of some sort intergrated into your vids? possibly do one video per topic/ treatment?
Excellent points. One tip from us bushcrafters is that second to a knife and a means to make fire is a metal pot. With that you can boil water to kill the nastiness, boil the sheet after you cut it into strips for bandages and cut down on the nastiness on it, etc. A pot is the least glamorous thing I can think of and one of the most useful things in an emergency you can have.
For all to Keep in mind it is the lack of sanitation and nutrition that are the biggest killers in the less advanced nations. Clean running water and effective ways of sterilization are two of the primary reasons this nation does not have the epidemics that exist in other nations.
Make sure to include a large variety of canned fruits & vegetables - there is no single silver bullet.
A lot of pound/dollar shops sell basic medical supplies like bandages. E-bay is always an option too. The suggestion of getting rags is an excellent idea too.
any since able human with a ounce of breading does support prep. if you ask this well meaning lady any thing that took money from this system she would loose her job
Good stuff as usual, I know what you mean I had to treat a big roadrash a while back,,, and holy crap,,,, I went through about $170 worth of dressings for 2 weeks.
Thanks for what you are doing. Heading to the thrift store today for bed sheets. 2% Tincture of Iodine is a good inexpensive antiseptic and method of water purification all in one bottle for less than $1.50. I hate the taste, but 500mg of viiaman C per quart helps improve the taste. Read up and learn how to use it.
You can use the beans and rice as a base for your diet and add other items veggies fruits and etc to flavor it and spice it up much like the Japanese do now. Rice is the base of their diet and it is just spiced up with other items fish and veggies. Your typical Japanese eats at least as much as two pounds of rice a day.
One of my very favorite YouTube channels. Thank you, Patriot Nurse, for always packing such sage wisdom into each of your videos. Glad to see you back in action!
Here in the UK its amazing how many nurses don't even know how to apply a bandage, everything is the "tubinette" type of dressing these days. Thank you for a timely and interesting video.
Using your advice... I purchased well over 6 months supply of "pads" for my wife.. Needless to say she was a worried until I showed her your video on being prepared.
Could the "pads" be used for emergency bandages? I have several "sizes" to choice from. But unsure since they are designed to absorb.. if that would take more to "clot" a wound close?
Last thing I want is a bandage that will cause more blood loss.. I know how that sounds and I'm sure there are cheaper ways to bandage as they are $
I agree 100%. I have said this for years. Too many people get caught up in the Johnny Rambo SHTF all im gonna need is a "blow out" kit and I will be fine type mentality. This WILL NOT work in a true shtf situation people ! As she stated, you MUST pay attention to the other things that will kill you first. People die more from diarrhea than gunshot wounds......
Some great ideas you have brought up. I just switched to all cotton, homemade, female products. Why not make some homemade bandages. After all, anything can be boiled and sanitized, right?
Hi EVERYONE.. look up OBAMA ORDERED TO THE DENVER AIRPORT. It is an article from the eutimesDOTnet. VERY interesting. Also look up the videos.... AFTER ARMAGGEDON by the discovery channel. COMET ELENIN NIBIRU PLANET X & THE DAY OF THE LORD. And ADD dutchsinse. He has some great videos of the volcanos [ some are IN the USA ] and earth quakes that the news is not reporting. GOD BLESS! [[ ps.. great videos nurse lady. ]]
We have been incorporating "prepper" food into our diet-- it's good for rotation and testing food-prep ideas, to make sure we aren't making stupid assumptions.
Balance in our prep work"-- key concept. Too many emphasize brass and lead (that's the simple, "sexy" part)
Patriotnurse, look into the Sawyer water filtration systems. They make very price effective systems that will filter all the way down to virals and they guarantee a million gallons of throughput. No carbon filtration, but 99.9% of biologicals will be taken care of. They have both portable and stationary solutions. Low-tech and reliable.
@vashguud Been thinking about getting a manual wheat grass juicer since all yard grass is just as nutritious as wheat grass. Then we could drink our multivitamins. Just thinking out loud.
@katiatomsk Yard grass is a pest in my opinion, I do not have any at my land I have a more natural Texas grass. Please just take my advice and buy some bottles of the multivitamin lol. and blow off that lawn idea. Lawns replace plants that flower... bees need flowers... do you see where im going with this hehe?
I 100% agree about the "glitzy" things getting more attention. History shows us that up until WWII and sulfa drugs, often more deaths were due to disease and infection than actual combat wounds. I think of 2 of my Confederate uncles buried in Oakwood Cemetery, VA - both died of typhus. I wonder, I've been immunized against everything but anthrax when in the Army, but that was 15+ years ago. Do I have any residual immunity, or am I screwed as far as typhus, yellow fever, cholera, all that stuff?
Patriot Nurse, You are so correct. I totally agree with your statement that all gun carriers need formal training on how to treat a gun shot wound.

dehydrated food is great to store. long expiration dates and relatively cheap. lots of survival sites sell dehydration meats, milks, fats etc. fruits and veggies can be grown with cheap seed kits running around 20bucks for a decent variety. all of this is also lighter in weight than other foods. a good water filter is also an important investment. kataden makes great filters. small durable and reliable. get a good one! have collapsing water containers with water preservative drops.
leclarkpharmd 5 months ago
I Have a question, Those weight gainer drinks, protein drinks, muscle drinks etc.... the powdered ones that come in the large containers. Would that be a good thing to store? They are packed with so much stuff, I can't help to think that keeping a few of those around would be a good thing. Curious on your thoughts. Thanks.

More troops were killed by illness then by bullets during, the Revolution, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. As a Corpsman we were not only trained in Combat med we were trained in preventative med aka bug chasers.

ItsTime2WakeUp 5 months ago

Thanks again from Indian Country Farms.

another option for bandages for people on a budget is tampons from dollar stores... i am a man but stocked up on tampons from local dollar store....a 6 pack of tampons for one dollar is a great deal and if you have a serious cut they are very absorbant and clean
another tip for preppers is stock up on multivitamins....you will need some vitamins to supplement the rice and beans...LOL
I went to wallgreens and got botles of 400 at 75%off...3 dollars out the door!

Pay attention to this wonderful lady when she says you are more likely to die from the more pedestrian things vs. the high speed low drag trauma related stuff.
sarguy350 5 months ago
@sarguy350 pre WWII back to the beginning of time more soldiers in war time were killed by disease than combat. I'm not sure of the exact number but I think I read somewhere (I think "The Great Influenza" by Thom Barry) that like 80% of US deaths were influenza deaths. People don't realize the vast scope of this stuff. You're right on Sarguy and PatriotNurse has her thumb on the picture.

Heading to the thrift store today for bed sheets. 2% Tincture of Iodine is a good inexpensive antiseptic and method of water purification all in one bottle for less than $1.50.
