My favorite concerto, along with Busoni's! Thanks for uploading. This is a very good orchestra, especially for a youth orchestra, but hey, Dudamel is conducting, so what do you expect? ;)
@classicvinylbiz Yes indeed, although you will not see the technical difference between Gelber and the above interpreter: Gelber plays WITH the piano, as Gerstein seems to do it AGAINST the instrument . . . Of course this is rather difficult to understand, but at first sight (or listening), few ot these gifted players (Horowitz, Lipatti, G. Gould, Argerich, Kissin), step forward for their sound performance, which redounds in a perfect pedal technike . . .
the true voice of Brahms is in his chamber music; second to none......; the piano parts to his piano quartets or trios are wonderful. Must agree with pogradecaripanjohur....Brahms IS the man!!!
y would u feel reserved, his music is great and so smartly constructed especially his trios and his chamber music in general, trust me brahms is the master in terms of developing the theme
Regarding your dilemma, christophe73, I love the smaller piano pieces, the Ops. 116-119, but they are much more intimate. The concertos were a lead-in to the symphonies, which are awesome.
If you want to hear german music done by Dudamel, look up Eroica, Marche Funebre. The not so excitable german audience went wild. Find it on youtube. Its there.
Bachfong11 this goes for you, before daring to criticize this orchestra play better than all of them or conduct better than Dudamel, or play the piano better than Gernstein, then I allow you to criticize to this orchestra. Lack of respect!!!
No. Dudamel simply doesn't bring ENOUGH grandiosity to this piece. The first movement especially deserves a high level of grandiosity. The vast majority of the notes are simply staccato.
Brahms' music is so... so... Powerful. That openning statement with the the violins is just remarkable. Then at about 2:51 those big orchestral hits are just so aggressive. I wish I could compose such significant masterpieces like Johannes Brahms.
@sonata1992 Well, they're really not a youth orchestra in the strict sense.... that's a misnomer that became popular in the West. Lots of young players, alright (and the camera focus almost exclusively on them, for some reason).
If not for the volume, this is for me the most stunning vid at Youtube until now, recently saw and heard this conductor in Rotterdam (Ravel, Liszt and Strawinsky), the down-to-earth Rotterdam public went crazy, same pianist btw playing Liszt's second piano concerto
A movie from the early 60s, "The L-Shaped Room" uses this movement for its soundtrack. It worked for me! Brahms, I have read, was about these kids' age when he wrote this piece. What a guy! What a guy!
spencer97405, you're almost right. As a young man, Brahms wrote this initally as a symphony but it didn't work. So he put it aside for a few years and later re-worked it into what we know now.
For those who don't know, Gustavo Dudamel is the new Los Angeles Philhamonic Orchestra Music Director, replacing Eza-Pekka Salonen. Like his predecessor, a young and talented artist.
Maybe Dudamel overdoes it ever-so-slightly in the introduction, but it is incredibly exciting! Gerstein is magnificent so far. It's so difficult in Brahms to phrase properly. Too much rubato and it sounds sentimental, too little and it sounds academic. Gerstein seems to be getting the exact right balance. So far this is easily better than the Nelson Freire version also posted here.
Tremenda interpretación, Gustavo Dudamel estás poniendo muy en alto el nombre de nuestro país, espero poder ver más videos tuyos y de nuestros muchachos por acá en el futuro, es especial aquella memorable resurrección de Mahler... Viva Venezuela!
I agree, he's one of the greatest! but... among YOUNG pianists??
:D don't be angry, i'm just kidding.
I love this work so much! Specially 1st and 2nd movements. Being the Cloudy Bramhs, this piece is very luminous, isn't it? I'm a conductor myself, but I've never had the opportunity of do this concerto.
I have to say, I'm very touch about Krill's sensitivity. There are so many pianists that kill Brahms...! But he really feels it in the bones. Bravo!
This is not just a youth orchestra. Is probably one of the best orchestras in the world. Although the sound here is not the best.

A fine performance indeed! I highly recommend this 1967 recording by then-26 year old Argentinian pianist Bruno-Leonard Gelber:

It is a hard piece to bring grandiosity from... Let's remember Brahms has a certain way for orchestral composition...
Plus Dudamel and Venezuelan's Orchestral System have a thing with playing everything faster than it's supposed to be.
