  • Hey this is cool! If you double the size of the farm, then capture a queen (not that hard btw) they will make chambers and leave eggs in them, and store food! Needs MOAR SPACE!

  • hello just set up my ant farm but all the ants are just staying in the corner and not digging are they on strike or have i done something wrong they have only been in there 24 hours so far.

    cheers richie

  • i have one of these and im sorry but i might just copy your idea......maybe

  • needs a deeper farm..then amybe they go all the way down

  • Really cool dude, i know they are dead now, but are you going to get some more ants for it? It would be like a home without a family. A really cool home though

  • what happens if theey eat all the gel

  • Hello, I'm just wondering what this gel is made out of, and wether you could make it yourself, because i was just watching a video about 5minutes ago about ballistic gel, which is just gelatin and water, so if i did that but added stuff like sugar and the juices of some fruit, would it work ??

  • @Chris0151Mc From what I hear, this gel is made by Nasa. I imagine it's probably hard to recreate. You can order it though online. Just google "Ant farms" and it shouldn't be hard to find.

  • they eat the gel they take ti and move it to top and eat it later rhere more worried about shelter XD

  • can you put any type of ant into a real or gel antfarm?

  • are you not afraid that they can go out form aquarium?

  • Do they breed or something? i thought ants have a short lifespan

  • this kind of ant farm is only designed for worker ants. it is enough for them to live their short lifespan and die

if you put in a queen she will starve to death because the gel won't give her the nutrition she needs. if you want to have a queen you need a REAL ant farm

  • if the gel starts to run out what do i do just put leaves and stuff in there>

  • ants eat almost any food like apple segments or cookie crumbs for water a cotteon bud dipped in water but these sort of ant farms don't last long as the worker die out fast

  • how can you find a queen ant? do the ants just decide like ''oh shes pretty she should be our queen! all hail the queen!''

  • I know this comment is a little late, but obtaining a queen can be pretty hard. Many states make it illegal to ship a queen, and all you get on websites are workers. So they live out their life and die, with no one to replenish them. The queen is butt ugly anyway. Think of a maggot, and that's what a queen looks like. XD

  • @emogalinkheart Nuptial flight look it up

  • @emogalinkheart No, that's not how it works lol. Queen Ants are rare to find. From what I remember, I think all Queen ants are born and bred around the same time. I believe it's early spring or late fall. They are huge and have wings, they fly to find a spot to create an ant family and once they find a spot to burrown, they leave their wings behind and start laying eggs of their own. I did a report on Ants back in grade school but that was 20 years ago.

  • @marilyn007manson1 Cool! Lol thx :)

  • @marilyn007manson1 They're not all that rare, they just look like impossibly big ants that appear out of nowhere. Usually they've already shed their wings when you see them.

One time I caught a carpenter queen and put her in an ant farm, she dug a little tunnel and laid some eggs, but she died and they never hatched

  • @kozmon0t It might depend on what part of the country you're in too. In Iowa we got the fat black carpentar ants and little brown sugar ants. I was in S. Carolina once where they got crazy big cowants and tiny fireants. I guess I should've rephrased that they are rare to find for me, but then again I spend all day in my bedroom. lol

  • where can i find the queen ant?

  • Ive had 2 ant farms now first 1 was antworks got it for christmas but all the ants did was crawl in 2 the corner and die even though i did everything properly but now i got a new 1 but they keep doing the same WTF SHOULD I DO

  • U got wrong ants? :D

  • yeah, he probably took a species that doesn't tunnel xD

  • Is it possible to put the gel into "fresh new" status? Or if the ants made tunnels, is there any way to clean the tunnels for the new ant familly after the first familly died?

  • Need to buy replacement gel.

  • The Gel does feed the ants..but im not sure if its enough to live on + plus it seems kina boring to eat gel all day long. And for the people who want ant stuffz and stuff ->> Antstore . net Great service..Lil expensive sometime..but an awesome store they've got everything.

Not sure if you can fill up the gel..seems kinda hard. will have to get the ants out first i guess...wouldnt know where to leave em tho.

  • do you have to feed them daily or do they just eat the gel

  • They eat the gel... according to the box, it has added nutrients in it.

  • ok thx

  • @neyo245 they eat the gel

  • The queen CAN use cannibalism if there is no more food, put some maple sirup, vegetable or any food recommended on ants caring websites. The other ants will bring the food to the queen!

  • hm if i want a ant queen do i have to get a much bigger place for her to be in than antworks?

And were can i buy it? Or buy the things i need.

  • People there is no Queen the queen is much bigger than the size of these ants. Queens are not for sale because if they breed they give birth to hunreds of thousands of babies and the government does'nt want an ant infestation because of a loose queen!

  • 2,308,263,650,000,000,000 ants exist on planet earth.

The land area on Earth is approximately 57,491,000 square miles and at 10 ants per square inches you get 2,308,263,650,000,000,000 ants on planet earth... I dont think the government will care about 10,000 more....

  • @Plumkid19 wow you actually counted

  • @AlexandMann That is in your country :D

  • @AlexandMann I recently killed an ant queen in my room. What would the government care if I let that queen produce eggs in an ant farm, or let it free to produce eggs somewhere else? Are you talking about the USA government or another country?

  • The queen is still alive but there is only 3 workers left do you think she is eating them rather than the gel because there is no sign of dead bodies? the type of ants i have are Lasius niger

  • if you want a queen i would use a completely different set up, you need something much bigger. perhaps some tubing and a big tank connect to something like this. the queen needs alot of room, with a colony in the end you will always eventually run outta space, and the antworks gel thing is a childs toy in comparison to what you would need if you were serious about it. if i were you get the antworks first keep 25+ workers which will live for like 3 months and see if you like them

  • do you think it would work if i took a queen in it?

and how do i do a Time lapse? xP would`nt it take a great number of batteries on the cam or? xD sorry for stupid question but please answer ^^

  • Like I said I am not an etemologist, I just followed the instructions and the ants lived about 4 months (which from my Wikipedia research is their normal lifespan). As far as time lapse, I use Linux and a Mac so I could not tell you what you can do in XP. The time lapse was made using my camera, then just an import accomplished the video. Look at your camera for time lapse settings.

  • apparently the gel one isnt good for queens as they produce to much offspring. plus the ants become more aggresssive and prone to escape. these ones will last a few months and you can make a cast of the tunnels once they're done as a kinda of memorial

  • what if after all the gel is gone if i add dirt and what food and water they need could that work for making them live there just as the gel?

  • try "ANT CHOW" for replacement gel to refill your antworks ant farm or look for Ant Chow on ebay. I used it to refill an Antworks ant farm and used the rest to make one out of a peanut butter jar.

  • @chopaksnes well yeah you can put a queen.be sure she's alone.someone has already tried this.

  • @chopaksnes Most camera's have an inlet/outlet where you can plug them in instead of using batteries. You can usualy get these cords at any electronic stores like Radio Shack. Just plug one end into the camera and the other end into the outlet.

  • my sister got me this antworks farm for christmas, they are not harvester ants they came in a test tube about one queen and about 10 workers 4 have perished, i need too ask her what type of ant they are me thinks!

  • I think it is to make the product more marketable. You know the "coolness" factor in a geeky "toy".

  • I have one queen and only about 6 worker ants is my antfarm doomed?

  • From my understanding with these ant farms they do not send you a Queen. Just what I thought. The normal Western Harvester ants die within about 4 months. After 4 months all the tunnels were dug and only about 4 ants out of 20 were alive.

In your case I would think that the queen would begin to lay eggs so you would have more. But then again I am not an etemologist.

  • I just got one of these for Christmas, yesterday. It's freakin' awesome. I can't stop watching them...though all they've done since I put them in is try to get back out...XP The time lapse was a cool idea...looks like they all work together on one thing at a time.

  • I got mine for Christmas last year. For the first week or so they just tried to get out. I think that after they started getting hungry they began to dig. But after that they were very very busy.

  • so stupid

  • Wow. You obviously have a sad life having to browse YouTube videos all day and reply in a two word "sentence" that isn't even punctuated. Why reply then? I don't remember forcing you to watch this.

This was done for my enjoyment not yours.

  • BUSKONIG got owned i love ants im going to get an ant farm one day

  • Yeah, he kept trying to reply but I blocked his comments. Why just comment if it is going to be so lame?

The ant farm was fun while it lasted... they are all dead now, but I still have the farm on my desk at work.

  • How many ants do you have?

  • I had about 20.

  • It seems that the ants build their tunnels to get to the light. Why is that?

  • so they have light. why else?

  • Not exactly. While it might be true that they enjoy the warmth, they generally start digging until they hit the corner of the tank, and then they follow it down to the bottom. They then dig along the bottom (trying to get further.) Once the that tunnel is big enough to house them all when they rest, they start adding upward tunnels to the surface, to streamline foraging.

  • anyone know what kind of ants these are??

  • The are Western Harvester ants. All female, no male and no queen. They usually only breed male ants when they need to... well breed.

  • Many thanks for the info & those guys really like to dig! my ants in my vid where common black garden ants - which did nothing at all!

  • what is not real?

  • its not real...!

  • Oh I can assure you that it is indeed real. It has been on my work desk for the past 3 months.

It is simply filmed as a time lapse.

  • I want that too.. nice video... time lapse rocks
