@FunkyFierceOfficial no, they can do wot they want and be good at it, they just hav to b an artist and create, or as electricdream sez, be musicians. sum folk like vynil, some cd's, som mp3s. who cares, its wotever medium you hav a working feel for. if its good, its good. many top dj's wud laugh at most of these comments
@FunkyFierceOfficial it dosnt matter whether its vynil digital, or analogue, or anything... as long as someone genuinly creative is at the helm. or accoutstic, electic, effects, no effects... its either good or its not whatever it is. oh, and i like apples and pears too.
again, wether guitar, vinyl, mp3, cd, analogue, accoustic, its all one. reminds me of the 1980s arguments between trad comedy and alternative comedy. dumb, as either way, it made u laf or it didnt. wen i wa a kid, my pals mum thot that it was jimi hendrix's effects that made him sound so good. tut tut, it was years of had work that di it. which is just as tru with a vinyl or traktor dj. IF they r good
When someone learns to draw they don't have to learn how to use every medium perfectly. I choose not to learn the "art" of beat matching. However I do choose to learn the art of mixing, using effects in new ways to CHANGE how tracks feel, they're structure. Some people choose to learn it all, but use there favorites. That's what Rich has done.
yep, his gigs are very very intensly interesting. the ravers just dance and trance out, and the musicians at his gigs stand awe struck. its very good to catch him live. a nice man too.
I have huge respect for what Richie is doing with the art of DJing. He can basically take all his techno tracks and create an entire symphony of new songs live on the decks. This is where DJing is less of a guy playing some popular songs and more of a true musician performing!
someone people just shouldnt call themselfs djs because they dont go through the same path djs go through end of the story. It means something to old school guys, so get dj off ur name thats all. Producers are better anyways and live acts are the shit.. But if u combine all of it together , now thats what were aiming for :) .
yeh, at end of the day, is something good, new, and viable being made? i love the bands who use all of it. pink floyd and hawkwind and gong were parallel to what you are implying. their sound guys were part of the band really.
tho i think it would have been better for all three of those bands if LSD and their bands had started nowadays. better technology for them.
if you are a creative DJ, who wants to use loops of multiple songs at once in your set, then I don't see the problem with using a sync function... in essence it is just an inconvenience of analogue DJing... if you can use that extra time to be more creative and make something better then use it... I don't see anyone complaining about Photoshopping images, sure you can do the same effects in a light room using specialist techniques, but why bother wasting your time?
@RyanHyman1989 also 'real" photography effects are very poisonous. almost all dark room chemicals are very shitty and dangerous. and needless.
some may say, "yeh but power staions are dirty", and i say, yeh, but you can get your own sustainable power supply, and how many of the folk that complain actually do?
this is in no way cheating. if u dont adapt to technology as a dj u die. some people who go digital such as himself dont even consider themselves dj's anymore because there are no discs involved lol. they are without a doubt considered that way by the fans. this is creativity to its limit and what hes doing is actually very sophisticated. especially in minimal and tech-house. and with a sound as srict as minus and plus-8 you have to be creative. to him hes probably been doing wat he always did.
@QuantumLX18 its the sma ewith these so called "real" musicians, most are copy cats so may a well be a jukebox themselves. and if they dont as modern musicians have full blown pro-tools (not the basic few 100 pound on, but the 5000 for the disc one) then you aint worth shit.
also with most new bands they are being made to be DEPENDANT on the protools engineers. they are a sneaky little cleek.
tho to be fair, it matters not a fuck how advanced you tech spec is. u r good or not, real or dj
@QuantumLX18 its not true that those who stick to vinyl dj'ing die. if they make it as an art form and keep an audience they'll be fine. just as i still love to go see 60s psychedelic acts, and 70s space-rock acts, punk acts, acid-rock who use their original equipment and techniques. i still enjoy many lo tech accoustic and semi accoustic. the technology arquement is a bit dodgy. just enjoy anything good.
so now with this setup any 10 yo can be a dj mixing his free downloaded mp3's. technology ruined the music industry and the quality of music nowdays. as a clubber i hate to see a dj behind a pc, who is telling me his set isnt recorded at home and he is just messing with knobs? whats the next step? leave a hologram of a dj at the booth while dj is broadcasting his mix from home? gimme a break. my respect to the few djs out there mixing vinyls and paying for them cause they really love music.
@tektube Who's to say someone standing behind a set of vinyl decks doesn't have a cd player hooked up to the mixer instead, and is just playing his recorded set off that?
Both are art forms man, if that ten year old takes his free downloaded mp3s and does cool and interesting things with them, doesn't that have more merit than someone mixing lady gaga and justin bieber off vinyl?
I fully understand why you say that though, I've seen people mix using a mouse and it's horrible to see.
@sheldonplankton i really dont care if the 10yo playing free mp3s and making an awesome set. its all about supporting the artists and give em the motive to go on and write things. they call themselves djs and they say they support the house (w/e) scene. how the f... u support the scene w/o paying a single penny? and how the f... u support traktor w/o buying it? simple isnt it?
@tektube I support the scene(s) by going to gigs and buying music when I love it, but to be very honest man I can't afford 2 decks, a mixer, and shitloads of vinyl (plus whatever else I'd need, I don't even know tbh). Hell, I can barely afford traktor and a midi controller.
You're pissed at piracy, not traktor.
And by the way, if you prefer someone who supports the scene but makes utter cacophony, you've got an odd taste in music. I personally like things that make my ears feel happy.
well a ten year old can with this stuff learn how to beat match in seconds actually. BUT then if thats all you can do, u aint gonna get the gigs in. wot is special here, if u had heard any of the orignal trax these guys r using, u wud see that they are creating totally new stuff each time the dj.
i understand exactly wot u r trying to say. but with the capabilities and possibilities of traktor, u r a bit off the target. vinyil is too limitied. and com acros like guitar snobs do.
ok, didn't know that. what exactly is different with his 92?
I thought perhaps he likes the four band equalizer, in contrary to the 4d which has a 3 band.
I'm thinking of getting a 4d or a 92 (instead of my djm800 at the moment). . . a con for me for the 4d is that it's quite narrow and that it is 3 band equalizer, because I want four, however the midi . . . big +
the midi on the 4d can you compare it with the 1d/2d or is the 4d going way above?
@SmiteKite If i recall correctly he's got extra knobs in the top middle part and maybe a few elsewhere, i'm not sure what else is different.
To me, the 4d is always on my wishlist. The 1/2d's look great but there's just such a big jump from the 1-2 even 3d's to the 4d that id definitely pick up the 4d
What happens if the laptop fails.. Well for a start dont use Windows. Next, take some vinyl or cds with you just in case. Ive been using this for a while now on a Macbook pro thats 2 years old & not 1 problem. Many will say its still not great with Snow Leopard however Im using Leopard & its rock solid! Best money ive ever spent!!!
What happens? , well last year I was in a Marc Houle show... the computer failed before and you know what happened? nothing... he just didn't play ... I was so fucking pissed
there cant happen anything when you bring some Vinyls with you ;) so that you can put them on, when you laptop fails.... but i dont think that a MacBook can fail :D:D:D
This is amazing stuff, and how refreshing to see that DJ-ing now has the capacity to become more than just beat mixing, but a whole new art form. Those who are scared or dubious about the validity of this stuff are failing to see the potential there is for it to take DJ-ing to a whole new level. Thanks for a very interesting and informative video - :)
Hey there Richie, I love my DJ traktor software, but I have some questions on how to connect my firewire sound card, behringer mixing board and feed everything through the sotware so I can queue up music and such. Please let me know if I can email you any questions? thanks so much!
when speaking about djing with pc`s,always think in autosync, this is just 1more tool,it doesnt mean you cant beatmaching...this tool just make the things faster for improving your skills mixing...
I'll admit, I was apprehensive about Midi DJing at first. Now, I'm thinking that, although beatmixing should still be a must-have-skill for DJs, setup's like this allow some pretty astounding shows.
Anyways, it's not like Deadmau5 constantly playing live remixes of stuff on his album over and over again.
anyone that thinks using midi isnt art or "real" djing is simply not educated about the new technology available to djs. Anyone hating on midi should really take the time to try it out...it offers infinite possibilities for any level of dj. And i started out only using vinyl.
everyone who is saying crap about midi being not real djing should wank off , Richie has proven he knows what hes doing years before traktor even existed. this music is created by himself with his colleges. the argument that beatmatching IS DJing is rediculous , that was always a mean to an end , espeicially in techno ,
I know DJs who can't beatmatch to save their life but their timing and knowledge of the tracks makes thier performance fantastic. I've learned a lot over the past 2 years about the importance of timing and that beatmatching is not the only way to blend a track. But beat matching does make for great blends but with this technology we can focus on other aspects (loops, samples, rapid song selection, mash-ups on the fly, etc)
Knowing how to match beats is critical to understanding the structure and timing of your music. Its simple, the music has to flow. The computer can help in doing this, however you have to know how to do it yourself so you can move on to other more complex things (like sampling on the fly, spinning with 4 decks, looping, etc..)
@thehoaremaster yep, in context of vinyl, i find beatmatching with vinyl too costly and time consuming to bother with. building up a library listed accoding to bpm etc. too much hassle and too limiting. and when using vinyl of differing bpm, too frustrating.
Spot on. If I had the choice between seeing Richie Hawtin 10 years ago on two 1210s or now with 4 decks, effects, etc I know which would be a better night out. AND even if he used the same tracks, no 2 sets would be the same.
To the "Luddites": beatmatching is a knack anyone with enough patience can learn. It does not make you a DJ any more than being able to play some chords on a guitar makes you Eric Clapton.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Your right if your not doing the mixing then your are playin an Ipod playlist. Any idiot can do that. That takes no skill. For all those djs out there thinking of taking this route. DON'T FUCKIN DO IT!!!!! Get some turntables and mix manually. Not to say computer is bad. But you should only use it to carry your music. The rest should be up 2 you.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Then why don't you paint a picture with a Stencil. Come on. It's an art form not something that you can fake with technology. Technology helps. But this is bullshit disguised as DJin.
Hmm, I always thought DJing was about making a good show so that people have fun dancing, not about what technology is being used. If the show is good, the audience won't care about issues like beatmatching by ear vs software beatmatching.
Thats like comparing a drum machine to a real drummer. Which one is better to listen to? Yea you can throw a good show. But it's also about showing off your skills to your peer djs, and spreading the knowledge of new techniques. Not who can make the best ITunes play list.
@glict bollox. i heard the same thing when i was a kid in the late 60s about electric guitars and effects. this approach is debilitating and retarded.
hi, what exactly are you doing with the jog(transport)wheel at the end? Can it be used to scroll through songs to find a good cue point (as with turntables or cdj's ? i hope i'm a bit clear... cheers
no i dont even like richie hawtin you fucking bitch. i saw this video because i looked up "Traktor Scratch Pro".and
because i say what i thought was right you call me a "Sycophantic asshole" you need to stop being a fucking dick to the world and then MAYBE youll get some friends.
He's got a down to earth, creative way of looking at the technological advancements for dj's rather than just cussing the unknown because it's forward thinking and not the original way. People never say cycling on a mountain bike is wrong, and only a penny farthing is the correct way to do it, id like to see who has more fun and ease in a downhill race, and this applies to dj'ing aswell, if the oppertunities to explore new areas are being provided don't mock it just 'cause it;s not vynil
Thats true, but on the other hand plenty of alternatives to 2 wheels and 2 pedals have been tried and discarded. At the end of the day, if the DJ's getting it right nobody cares if its coming off vinyl or down a USB cable...
As a DJ Mr Hawtin is really into this -how do i say this- "functional" techno music and production. I understand why he loves working that way. It's convenient, fast and well i think he's a little bit a tech nerd ;) But most of the time it sounds soulless to me. Too much focus on technology. Nevertheless he has produced some amazing music in the ...I like his early Plastikman Stuff a lot!
traktor is a good tool if you have a good mac/p.c to run it on and learn all the ins and outs. i use it in conjunction with cdj800's and a djm800 mixer with a midi send feature. its really good for looping, playlist managing and the interface is well laid out too.
Serato Scratch live i cant say i have used as with any time code viynl.

@MrdjHYPEr
yep, his gigs are very very intensly interesting. the ravers just dance and trance out, and the musicians at his gigs stand awe struck. its very good to catch him live. a nice man too.

I have huge respect for what Richie is doing with the art of DJing. He can basically take all his techno tracks and create an entire symphony of new songs live on the decks. This is where DJing is less of a guy playing some popular songs and more of a true musician performing!
michael34453 10 months ago 3
It's just awesome how you could scan through an incoming track and have it synced with the live track, and see how they sound together.
That's just plain crazy.

someone people just shouldnt call themselfs djs because they dont go through the same path djs go through end of the story. It means something to old school guys, so get dj off ur name thats all. Producers are better anyways and live acts are the shit.. But if u combine all of it together , now thats what were aiming for :) .
pav123456 1 year ago
@pav123456
yeh, at end of the day, is something good, new, and viable being made? i love the bands who use all of it. pink floyd and hawkwind and gong were parallel to what you are implying. their sound guys were part of the band really.
tho i think it would have been better for all three of those bands if LSD and their bands had started nowadays. better technology for them.
gnowave 3 months ago
@pav123456 most live acts r shit BECAUSE of modern producers. they use full-blown protools to make young bands dependant apon them. fact.
but u r right in that ON AVERAGE, most good dj's, vinyl or digital tend to be trained producers.
gnowave 2 months ago
if you are a creative DJ, who wants to use loops of multiple songs at once in your set, then I don't see the problem with using a sync function... in essence it is just an inconvenience of analogue DJing... if you can use that extra time to be more creative and make something better then use it... I don't see anyone complaining about Photoshopping images, sure you can do the same effects in a light room using specialist techniques, but why bother wasting your time?
RyanHyman1989 1 year ago 16
@RyanHyman1989 also 'real" photography effects are very poisonous. almost all dark room chemicals are very shitty and dangerous. and needless.
some may say, "yeh but power staions are dirty", and i say, yeh, but you can get your own sustainable power supply, and how many of the folk that complain actually do?
gnowave 3 months ago
this is in no way cheating. if u dont adapt to technology as a dj u die. some people who go digital such as himself dont even consider themselves dj's anymore because there are no discs involved lol. they are without a doubt considered that way by the fans. this is creativity to its limit and what hes doing is actually very sophisticated. especially in minimal and tech-house. and with a sound as srict as minus and plus-8 you have to be creative. to him hes probably been doing wat he always did.
QuantumLX18 1 year ago
@QuantumLX18 its the sma ewith these so called "real" musicians, most are copy cats so may a well be a jukebox themselves. and if they dont as modern musicians have full blown pro-tools (not the basic few 100 pound on, but the 5000 for the disc one) then you aint worth shit.
also with most new bands they are being made to be DEPENDANT on the protools engineers. they are a sneaky little cleek.
tho to be fair, it matters not a fuck how advanced you tech spec is. u r good or not, real or dj
gnowave 3 months ago
@QuantumLX18 its not true that those who stick to vinyl dj'ing die. if they make it as an art form and keep an audience they'll be fine. just as i still love to go see 60s psychedelic acts, and 70s space-rock acts, punk acts, acid-rock who use their original equipment and techniques. i still enjoy many lo tech accoustic and semi accoustic. the technology arquement is a bit dodgy. just enjoy anything good.

so now with this setup any 10 yo can be a dj mixing his free downloaded mp3's. technology ruined the music industry and the quality of music nowdays. as a clubber i hate to see a dj behind a pc, who is telling me his set isnt recorded at home and he is just messing with knobs? whats the next step? leave a hologram of a dj at the booth while dj is broadcasting his mix from home? gimme a break. my respect to the few djs out there mixing vinyls and paying for them cause they really love music.
tektube 1 year ago
@tektube Who's to say someone standing behind a set of vinyl decks doesn't have a cd player hooked up to the mixer instead, and is just playing his recorded set off that?
Both are art forms man, if that ten year old takes his free downloaded mp3s and does cool and interesting things with them, doesn't that have more merit than someone mixing lady gaga and justin bieber off vinyl?
I fully understand why you say that though, I've seen people mix using a mouse and it's horrible to see.
sheldonplankton 1 year ago 2
@sheldonplankton i really dont care if the 10yo playing free mp3s and making an awesome set. its all about supporting the artists and give em the motive to go on and write things. they call themselves djs and they say they support the house (w/e) scene. how the f... u support the scene w/o paying a single penny? and how the f... u support traktor w/o buying it? simple isnt it?
tektube 1 year ago
@tektube I support the scene(s) by going to gigs and buying music when I love it, but to be very honest man I can't afford 2 decks, a mixer, and shitloads of vinyl (plus whatever else I'd need, I don't even know tbh). Hell, I can barely afford traktor and a midi controller.
You're pissed at piracy, not traktor.
And by the way, if you prefer someone who supports the scene but makes utter cacophony, you've got an odd taste in music. I personally like things that make my ears feel happy.
sheldonplankton 1 year ago 2
@sheldonplankton
piracy all the way. if a band or dj is any good they do gigs which we are all happy to pay for or work at.
gnowave 3 months ago
@tektube
eh, download the lot for free.
only shit musicians etc depend on sales that way. a good band, dj, etc earns thru GIGS.
gnowave 3 months ago
@tektube
well a ten year old can with this stuff learn how to beat match in seconds actually. BUT then if thats all you can do, u aint gonna get the gigs in. wot is special here, if u had heard any of the orignal trax these guys r using, u wud see that they are creating totally new stuff each time the dj.
i understand exactly wot u r trying to say. but with the capabilities and possibilities of traktor, u r a bit off the target. vinyil is too limitied. and com acros like guitar snobs do.

can anyone tell me why he isn't using an a&h 4d instead of a xone92 and two 2d's?
SmiteKite 1 year ago
@SmiteKite he's got a customized 92 so he might not want to get rid of it, though he could probably get a customized 4d
SixFourMusic 1 year ago
@SixFourMusic
ok, didn't know that. what exactly is different with his 92?
I thought perhaps he likes the four band equalizer, in contrary to the 4d which has a 3 band.
I'm thinking of getting a 4d or a 92 (instead of my djm800 at the moment). . . a con for me for the 4d is that it's quite narrow and that it is 3 band equalizer, because I want four, however the midi . . . big +
the midi on the 4d can you compare it with the 1d/2d or is the 4d going way above?
SmiteKite 1 year ago
@SmiteKite If i recall correctly he's got extra knobs in the top middle part and maybe a few elsewhere, i'm not sure what else is different.
To me, the 4d is always on my wishlist. The 1/2d's look great but there's just such a big jump from the 1-2 even 3d's to the 4d that id definitely pick up the 4d

This is amazing stuff, and how refreshing to see that DJ-ing now has the capacity to become more than just beat mixing, but a whole new art form. Thanks for a very interesting and informative video - :)

myshkin67 2 years ago
I'll admit, I was apprehensive about Midi DJing at first. Now, I'm thinking that, although beatmixing should still be a must-have-skill for DJs, setup's like this allow some pretty astounding shows.
Anyways, it's not like Deadmau5 constantly playing live remixes of stuff on his album over and over again.
CarnageVIII 2 years ago
anyone that thinks using midi isnt art or "real" djing is simply not educated about the new technology available to djs. Anyone hating on midi should really take the time to try it out...it offers infinite possibilities for any level of dj. And i started out only using vinyl.

everyone who is saying crap about midi being not real djing should wank off , Richie has proven he knows what hes doing years before traktor even existed. this music is created by himself with his colleges. the argument that beatmatching IS DJing is rediculous , that was always a mean to an end , espeicially in techno ,
bi0binary 2 years ago 4
True. When was the last time somebody told you that a paticular DJ was great at beatmatching?
thehoaremaster 2 years ago 4
I know DJs who can't beatmatch to save their life but their timing and knowledge of the tracks makes thier performance fantastic. I've learned a lot over the past 2 years about the importance of timing and that beatmatching is not the only way to blend a track. But beat matching does make for great blends but with this technology we can focus on other aspects (loops, samples, rapid song selection, mash-ups on the fly, etc)
jonpaulevans 2 years ago
Knowing how to match beats is critical to understanding the structure and timing of your music. Its simple, the music has to flow. The computer can help in doing this, however you have to know how to do it yourself so you can move on to other more complex things (like sampling on the fly, spinning with 4 decks, looping, etc..)
kidcapri009 2 years ago
@jonpaulevans brilliant comment
gnowave 2 months ago
@thehoaremaster yep, in context of vinyl, i find beatmatching with vinyl too costly and time consuming to bother with. building up a library listed accoding to bpm etc. too much hassle and too limiting. and when using vinyl of differing bpm, too frustrating.
gnowave 2 months ago

Your right if your not doing the mixing then your are playin an Ipod playlist. Any idiot can do that. That takes no skill. For all those djs out there thinking of taking this route. Then why don't you paint a picture with a Stencil. Come on. It's an art form not something that you can fake with technology. Technology helps. But this is bullshit disguised as DJin.
glict 2 years ago
Hmm, I always thought DJing was about making a good show so that people have fun dancing, not about what technology is being used. If the show is good, the audience won't care about issues like beatmatching by ear vs software beatmatching.
Wormsie 2 years ago
Thats like comparing a drum machine to a real drummer. Which one is better to listen to? Yea you can throw a good show. But it's also about showing off your skills to your peer djs, and spreading the knowledge of new techniques. Not who can make the best ITunes play list.

He's got a down to earth, creative way of looking at the technological advancements for dj's rather than just cussing the unknown because it's forward thinking and not the original way. People never say cycling on a mountain bike is wrong, and only a penny farthing is the correct way to do it, id like to see who has more fun and ease in a downhill race, and this applies to dj'ing aswell, if the oppertunities to explore new areas are being provided don't mock it just 'cause it;s not vynil
chidamole 2 years ago 4
Thats true, but on the other hand plenty of alternatives to 2 wheels and 2 pedals have been tried and discarded. At the end of the day, if the DJ's getting it right nobody cares if its coming off vinyl or down a USB cable...
