He knew it was his fans who made him "the king" although he hated that term, he said there is only one king and that is God. He really appreciated his fans. Have you seen the clip on "Thats the way it is"? He gets down into the crown while the music is playing love me tender, the crowd goes wild, kissing the women etc., Elvis loved us.
