Well done video. Some people seem convinced that a external drive is better solution. Its not, for the fact that throughput on USB 2 is typically only 320 mb/s on a harddrive. eSata is better at upto 3000 mb/s which is comparable to most internal Sata drives. For some reason though, I still find my mac boots faster of the internal 7200 rpm Sata drive. My next upgrade will be most likely a SSD drive which is what Mac is promoting with their newer products. Or get a 60 dollar 500 Gig 7200 rpm dr.
actually your wrong has anyone seen external harddrives lateley? there TINY iv seed some that run only off of USB and powered my USB so really as the advantage of having all your files you also have your operating system and with mac OSX you can install the operating system to the harddrive and run it on a PC! or any other computer!
@kuza261 even though they are small, an external drive has slower throughput especially running through USB 2. You could run a decent external exclosure through eSata but still not as fast as running a full internal drive. I do alot of video editing with my Macbook Pro and I7 PC. I use an external drive mostly for backups and copying the required video loops. I do my full edits on my internal drive still since the throughput will be much faster for editing and rendering purposes.

@kuza261 I doubt you could run that same OS between two different hardware's You would mostly like have to run a dual boot to address the different hardware needs. Also like I said earlier throughput on USB 2 sucks. Unless your doing eSata possibly. I still would rather still boot of my Macbook internal drive for most purposes. And besides SSD, is just around the corner. So the real best scenario is to put a SSD internally in the macbook and be done with it and use external eSata enclosure drive

is there a way i can make an exact copy of my hard drive now with the os installed on there? or some how get my files on the new drive, and will it boot up properly
Will doing this void your warranty? I plan on buying a Macbook Pro 15" for college, but I really would rather buy the upgrades and instal them myself, makes it cheaper that way.
This seems so much easier than changing the HD in the old 17" MacBook Pro. I did it 3 times already and I'm pretty good at it now, but I am happy to see that once I buy this new one, I won't have to go through that pain anymore. :)
based on my previous experience, i'd like to remove the battery before i jiggle with the hard drive. it wasn't with a macbook, but i once fried a brand new hard drive because i didn't remove the battery first. i know the hard drive was working because i formatted it using an eSATA connection to my desktop before i put it in my laptop. am i the only unlucky one to whom this happened?
The reason for the new hard drive was not only for space but for the faster speed(from 5400rpm to 7200rpm). An external HD is not only slower but it's also a pain to carry around.
I've fully discharged the battery twice, the first time it lasted 5.5 hours and the second it lasted just under 4. It all depends on what you do obviously but I'm still happy with it.

Fastest way is: stick snow leopard in, reinstall, restore from time machine backup. It'll be blank and unbootable until you do.

No, it does not apply to HD or RAM swapping.

Way easier than replacing CD in the TitaniumPB 500.
Ok, good job. Does the 7200 speed platter translate to noticeably smooter - fast - groovier hard drive "vs" the 5400?

Couldn't you have bought an external hard drive - instead.
Von2good 2 years ago
The reason for the new hard drive was not only for space but for the faster speed(from 5400rpm to 7200rpm). An external HD is not only slower but it's also a pain to carry around.

Ah good point, I had never thought of that. I think I'll do that with mine then when I get it - thanks for the video.

changing a hard drive on the macbook pro doesn't void the warranty?
you should do the video on changing the memory too! would be really interesting to watch, and helpful.

I've fully discharged the battery twice, the first time it lasted 5.5 hours and the second it lasted just under 4. It all depends on what you do obviously but I'm still happy with it.
