@Varangian1915 well, seeing as how the "baddies" are wearing bearskins & paint, plus they don't seem to have metal tools or weapons, maybe they're meant to be a remnant of a bygone age? who knows really? - it's just entertainment methinks. I think the film's based on a book by Michael Crichton (called something like "Eaters of the Dead"), so maybe the book would provide some explanation if you're interested.

I love these old mystic times. The vikings believed that big rocks in the forests, covered with moss, were trolls. The trolls turn to stone when you look upon them. When you turn your back at them, they creep in the forests. The vikings believed that on vast mires, elves danced. The light shining in through forests at evenings could reveal fairies. Odin awaits us, Ragnarök has yet to come.

Nice scene. The small statuette is a copy of the Venus of Willendorf, the oldest piece of sculpture known in western art and a symbol of the earth mother. Someone knows his iconography.
