We here in the US have also turned over education to the government and it is failing badly. Parents need to encourage learning and teach discipline. The government's idea is to keep throwing money at the system when there is no discipline at home or allowed in schools and kids don't care about learning.

Eastern cultures stress education and begin to teach children in infancy and they far out-perform the western cultures. We ought to be ashamed...

It strange we use to have 80 kids in a classroom, and everything was fine. Now they freak when we have over 27! And it also upsets me that some teachers somehow could teach better if they were paid more. If money is what they are looking for they should not be teaching in the first place.

How can you say eighty kids in a classroom is fine? That is way too many. Class sizes should be small. Think about it, one teacher teaching thirty kids? Don't you have a problem with that? That's a lot of kids for just one teacher to handle, don't you think? There are only so many minutes in an hour.

I think it's a failure on the part of the parents. They don't read to their children or encourage them to read. They expect the school to do it all. But one-to-one is virtually impossible in most schools.

to be honest I think I learned to read from my mum and dad, not from schoo.. so yeah I did get one to one tuition.

Parents need to stop passing the buck, the child is not supposed to learned everything in that 6 or 7 hours they have at school each day. 6 hours from 24 .. and their intelligence gets blamed on teh teachers ??

I don't think that you are bit grumpy. I am 74 this July and I left school in 1950. I started in Sept.1939, just as the war was declared, and I learnt to read and write and by the time I was 6 could read quite well. I am far from being clever. All through my schooling I didn't know of one single person who couldn't read or write and it was impossible to get away with not being able to do so.We didn't have one to one teaching and I was never in a class less than 40.

When I was at school (ahem, yes, a long time ago) each day the children would do a class project (quietly) while the teacher spent 5 minutes apart with each child reading through Janet and John. I still remember the thrill I got at that moment when I realised 'I can read!' That was 1 to 1 teaching.

Your right geriatric, one to one tution would stop a huge amount of problems in the 11-16 age group. Friends of mine in the profession tell me horror stories re the lack of imagination and energy with regards educating those kid whom are slower than others. I'm a grumpy youngish person too!!!

Half the problem is us parents, my two kids 6&7 come home with books that I should be reading with them, but 90% of the time the books stay in their book bag and they plonk themselves in front of the T.V. I can't be the only parent where this happens, my sons favorite T.V. programmes are Dr Who, Torchwood, Family guy, Futurama and the Simpsons, reading Pinky the penguin goes shopping does not appeal to so much, guess I'm a bad dad, ho hum....

my kids can read, I'm just pointing out that it's not just the schools fault they leave dumb, one on one tuition is impossible unless us parents get involved and do our bit.

In my sons class there are three Polish kids who couldn't speak a word let alone read it, many kids have two languages to learn, one at home another at school, can't be easy.

I suppose I'm lucky that my 9 year olds class contains ONLY English born kids - the school itself is often used as a model for others. Its very much a lottery where you are born.

As you say it must be very difficult in some inner city areas where the mix is a lot more.

Its definitely a prime responsibility of the parents though. My wife and I always made time to sit and read with both our kids - and the effect is very heartening both in school results and their 'thirst' for more really.

You're right...it does beggar belief! Another thing which I find incredulous is that British citizens go through rigorous background checks if they want to work at an airport. Anyone with a criminal record is banned. The amazing thing is that they don't check a foreigners criminal record...too time consuming apparently!!
