  • sounds like music in my ears.

  • I have driven both and the FORD was superior ,in my opinion

  • I have driven both anf the FORD was superior ,in my opinion

  • That's one sweet Continental. I like the impromptu oil tank . . .

  • those 2 guys are using the exhaust as a fucking electric fan. must be hot. =)

  • No replacement for displacement

  • I must confess that I did not know there was more than one engine used in Shermans. I thought they were built by GM's Cadillac Division and were of V8 design. This radial blows me away. But then WWII was 5 years before me, and my affection has always been for the aircraft it produced.

  • Can someone explain why they sit right under the exhaust manifold? lol?

  • Radial aircraft engine. They used anything that would work and anything that would get them to the ballte front. Had no coice.

  • Cab be used some parts in aircraft engines????

  • paßt auf Jungs, wenn die Ofenrohre beim Anlassen mal Feuer spucken, gibt das eine feine Föhnwelle.

  • the old LVT mk4(landing vehicle tracked) was radial engine powered...i don't remember but probably it used this unit

  • great sound! But it's probably the only sound you can hear in a few years from now because you don't wear any ear protection. Come on guys, are you really going deaf for a hobby ?

  • Never forget these machines were designed to kill!

  • which was the better engine in the Shermans the continental or the ford?

  • @Robkat3751 The Continental is a modified airplane engine used in a tank, The Ford was specially made for the Sherman and was more powerful than the Continental. I prefer the noise of the continental, but the Ford is more reliable.

  • @harentrois heck i like hte sherman, its had many different eingines in it. i agree vs ford tho. but i guess it was in where the unit was going, and what was available etc

  • I assume that these blokes never talk any more;they can't hear anyway!

  • yeaaah it's a cool sound ;)

  • Radial engine beats all other internal combustion engines in sound!

  • @DenEnder

They used them in tanks, mainly because they didn't have anything else powerful enough.

  • This sound beats all music. It is simply so desirable

  • it be so cool if this was a giant lawnmower because of dry sump it can sit any position but maby not the carb

  • why does that one guy hang out with his head right under the exaust pipes?

  • Because he´s stupid :-)

  • and the technicians running this engine are now profoundly deaf Should wear ear defenders chaps , we do on race cars

Beaut of an engine but not as nice as a RR merlin

  • For a short run like that Who needs water? Oil you do need! FTW.

  • It is a dry sump oil system,Looks like oil note no bubbles 500 to 600 horse power.

  • This is just a bautiful sound. Well done boys

  • people don't realize how many different engines the shermans used.

  • @trucker765 actually each factory used diferent one :-)

  • Of course, you have already seen a lot of aircraft engines with a turbine for the cooling instead of a propeller?

  • What's with the bucket of coolant?...if the engine is 'air-cooled'...what's the need of circulating coolant?

  • It is not water but oil. Inside the engine compartment, there is a oil tank for the engine. The oil pump takes the oil from the oil tank, pumps inside the engine and goes back into the oil tank after having been filtered.

  • No, It´s water! The engine was water cooled! Otherwise you are right!

  • The Ford V8 GAA, the 30 cyl. Chrysler A 57 mutibank, the 6 cyl in line GM diesel, were water cooled. But the Continental 9 cyl radial is air cooled.

  • @harentrois ok think about this if that is air cooled and in a tank they wouldnt get very far ....

  • Im sorry ´bout that, to quick to reply!!

  • Some radial were water cooled check for cooling fins I'm a old gun runner from the 60 's . Remember the 6 day war I was selling parts for that war in 65 & 66the Honey tanks were air cooled but the 37MM was not much!

  • Yeehaa! I was right! Water cooled, oil does´nt look like that! Egg on your face, to you that gave me a - point!

  • Yeah, the cooling fins on the cylinders and the giant fan bolted right to the crank shaft are just there for fun

  • so, why go radial? what was the advantage?

alors, pourquoi en etoile? c'est quoi l'avantage du dessin?

  • When US enter in war with Japan and Germany, they don't have medium tank in service. They build first the Grant and then the Sherman, but they don't have a appropriate engine for tank, so they took modified radial airplane engine who was available in great quantity. After they build the Ford V8 GAA specialy for tanks who was a better engine.

  • Compact, lots of power for the physical size.

  • They are air cooled, other than a few internal componets. So a lone bullet would not be able to puncture a radiator thus causing the engine to over heat.

  • Sounds good :)
