  • The reality is in 1996 when Subaru rolled out vehicles that were riding next to Chevy LT1s..and GM the game was over..what did Gm do..nothing...think about it in 9years..GM went from a LT1 camaro with 275hp to a LS1 with 310hp...5k more for the SS package which got 15hp more..its all a joke..here it is 20 years later and they are just getting to 400hp with heavy cars that arent that much faster than cars 10years ago..Gm should have had 400hp stock camaros in 2000, instead they quit in 2002..

I've bought nothing but American cars and they're very reliable. I own a Camaro SS, my first ride was an '87 Fiero GT so stop with the lame excuses.     Actually from what I can tell, it's a stock 1989 Trans am with a buick 3.8L turbo. But guess what? When I get my 700r4 Transmission I'd probably be able to spank your Lancer. Shit I just finished my building up a 454. With an Edelbroke dual carb tunnel ram intake manifold, 2 Holley 750 CFM Carbs, Forge aluminum pistons, connecting rods and crank, L88 High rise, High compression Cam, MSD ignition & distributer. 4:11.1 rear end and fresh pair of drag slicks to top my 1980 Corvette.

  • @rotor13 those cars ran mid 13's from the factory, they were only built in 89, had the buick gnx motor, which was the fastest car from the 80's. they are the lightest fbodies ever built. I have an 88 trans am. it has an ls1 in it, it hauls ass, runs low 12's with bolt ons. the tpi motors that came in the third gens were crap, they had low hp, and only ran about a mid to high 14. this particular car is very special, its the only fbodie from that generation that was fast.

  • @firechicken76 Pontiac was also the only other car manufacturer besides buick to be allowed to use that engine. Those TTA's outran most anything on the track at the time. My brother used to have a genuine TTA pace car but he sold it years ago...they are sick as hell.

  • Man I keep coming back to look at this video and i amazes me the comments that are still being put up. As I have said beforem this was my evo X... Completely stock, rolling the launch to save the clutch. I ran a low 14 second pass against this guy.

  • In '89 about 1500 Turbo Trans Am's were produced and were pretty fast from the factory, 0-60mph in under 5 seconds, that was in '89, which is still pretty good now. It had a tweaked version of the Grand National motor.

  • Actually that is a 3.8L V6 turbo that came like that from the factory. It's pretty much the same engine as a Buick Grand National except heads are different for the TTA and tuning I believe. Not a V8.

It's Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) and it's 2000 feet elevation and not sea level where the magazine test times come from. The T/A trapped at 114mph, it would be tough for even a bolt-on EVO to trap at that speed (especially at the elevation of this track). Go get a clue fanboy.

I've seen 800 horsepower mk4s struggle to get to the mid 12's, how the hell do you expect a stock mk3 to beat the Turbo TA?

  • with 4 mods: full exhaust, intake, methanol injection, and a tuned ecu. it was stated that the jap cars could use a few mods and with these simple basic bolt-ons every one of those will be at 13 seconds in the quarter or less. oh and first year for s13 with sr20det was 89, and first year for eclipse gsx was 90. so what it was actually released at the end of 89 as a 90 model

    But for argument's sake even if you were to include them in the category or 80's cars (Of which they are not) none of those cars measures up to the turbo TA, and they will not hit those numbers that easily. Don't get me wrong I like both imports and domestics but don't try to sell bullshit here, there's no way bolt ons, meth and a tune will drop 1-3 seconds of your quarter mile.

  • I know how quick these cars are, I'm not some proud American Musclehead, I like all cars, imports and domestics, and I happen to own and work on both, I just don't like people posting misleading information, which I feel you have done. The cars you listed will not hit those numbers on bolt-ons, tuning and meth. Let's be honest about things here. I can think of some imports that might be able to hit those numbers but certainly not the ones you listed. Do you actually race or even work on cars?

  • Even though the Evo may be a lightweight and fast vehicle...the TTA is a factory production car that produced 303hp, the 250hp number was well under-rated because GM didn't want any other vehicle to outperform the Corvette in ratings...but because of the boost, the light weight 3.8L with pontiac engineering enhancements, made the TTA one of the best front/rear weight transfer vehicles in the GM production line. It can handle straight line performance as well as road course action! Happy 20yrs!

  • I'd beg to differ, the 3rd gen TA is one of the most aerodynamic cars ever produced, and the only car to ever serve as a pacecar for the Indy 500 with NO modifications. Its more powerful, more aerodynamic and lighter than the evo. The evo is nice but how the hell is a 4 door sedan ever going to keep up with that on the curves?

  • ....especially that the F-body design was made for "trans am" racing back in the 60s..it carried on thur the 3rd and 4th gen vehicles! Based on design of the chassic the strut tower braces are high enough for partial or full adjustment from the factory, lower coil springs not only improve handlling but also improves the center of gravity. With the stock 245/50R16 wheels or the R17 "Ronal" wheels the TTA can easily handle road course action, more so then the evo....

  • Displacement has nothing to do with engine size. Example: The 4.6 liter modular engine that replaced the 5.0 in the mustang was actually bigger and heavier than the engine it replaced. Imports have big heads and DOHC's, that makes them heavy despite their small displacement. Pushrod cam-in-block engines, are light for their displacement. Instead of comparing displacement I suggest you compare engine weight.

  • You're stupid. The TTA was one of the fastest car of that year, even faster then the vette. It shares the same motor as the Grand National/GNX, and holds a spot in one of the top 10 best engines in the world. Evo will never share the same reputation as that TTA. The TTA is extremely rare, and is very easy to modify for huge horsepower gains. And even if the evo has more power then the TTA, i think the TTA held its line on its own with only its 250 hp motor that does 13s on the 1/4 mile all day.

And you cant launch a stock Evo at high rpms, you'll break the drivetrain/axles. You'll see most GN/GNX/TTAs beating Evos and other cars on youtube videos or in person. The fastest GN beats the fastest EVO in the world.

  • while i wont disagree that there comes a stopping point for AWD traction/weight reduction benifit, i will say that for a daily driven/weekend track car. there is not better choice than an AWD car. because there is no need for slicks, it goes year round in any weather, handles great and gives grea 0-60/60ft times.thats why i dont understand when oldschool guys get so pissed at imports. EVOs and STis are daily drivers, they (usually) arent built to be 100% track cars.

  • Maxshuty,TTA goes 0-60 in 4.6 secs on stock form. The TTA has the Buick GNX motor,The GNX goes 4.9 on the drag strip on stock.Their turbo motor is a BEAST. In fact its rated one of the top 10 motors in the WORLD. How often do you come across a rear wheel drive v6 with 250 hp doing 13's in the quarter mile? Point is the TTA is 20 years old, and can still outperform modern cars. Dont get me wrong, evos are fast, but if you want a legend, the TTA is the way to go.

  • You cant base things on theoretical internet numbers, and you also cant compare Lotus's Ferraris's Lambo's etc etc. to a TTA, two COMPLETELY different classes of cars. There is to many factors to drag racing. Yes the evo could have more money put into it, or a better driver, well the TTA could have a bad driver put in it and be stock. Who cares ppl, the TTA is one bad ass ride, very advanced for its time, if you like the evo cool, but dont have a hissy fit because it lost a race...

  • Well put my man. Those turbo V-6 motors GM made were way ahead of their time. This is a stock vehicle almost 20 years old built to be a daily driver. This max schmuck lists all the cars from this generation that are faster, true, but all built specifically for racing.

  • Now since I posted that I'm never gone hear the end of how "Those cars cost tons of money" well, I would then say take a 2005 Lotus Elise which you can pick up for about 27k- it wins. Get over it. It's got nothing on most cars. Its just a body with an engine in it--theres some Mustangs breaking 1000horsepower- big whoop, its TOTALLY Custom. Take two totally STOCK cars to the drag strip--now thats a true race. I've done some research- STOCK TTA 0-60 5.5 sec., STOCK Evo X 0-60 4.9 sec. IT WINS

    Quit whining about how good the TTA is. Ok, it beat an Evo in ONE RACE. Have it race a souped up Evo, that I would love to see.

    And to all of you saying 20 years of work and tons of money: A bone stock TTA will whip an EVO all the way around, including gas mileage. Also to you guys saying you see more of these 20 year old cars in the junkyard than your 15 year old junk, They only made about 1500 of them. I have never seen a TTA in a junkyard.

    Also if you look around a bit you will see TTA's running 9's.
