I think it was a combination of that, his amazingly good acting, and the fact that his character and the whole scene was so well-written. He took the inspirational, heroic role - the kind of guy we all wish we could be - of George Kirk and his performance made it all feel so very real.
It just goes to show - you don't have to be the "main star" of the film to make a massive impression - many I talked to claim that Chris' scenes as the doomed George Kirk Sr. are their favorites in the film!
And in the original timeline, he was. In fact, in that classic timeline, George was Jim's hero; the younger Kirk always tried to be like his dad, and so - totally unlike his movie universe self - was actually known as a hard-working overachiever and a star student. It's amazing how much difference losing your father makes, isn't it?

Hugh Jackman was Wolverine, Eric Bana was Hulk, Heath Ledger was The Joker and over half of the cast of X-Men Origins was Australian. Now another Aussie plays a comic book character! Awesome! Good luck to him!

Eric Bana was great! The movie wasnt good, but he was damn good. Its a shame people cant see past the film and recognise the hard hard work put in by the actors, who were all quite good!

Australia does have a habit of playing up parts by Aussie actors. But he's also got 3 other films in the pipeline so he'll be on the successful Aussies

He is gorgeous! He really caught my eye in the movie. And the movie...AMAZING!!! Best movie I've seen so far this year.
