I love the album version of sufocated love but this makes it sound kind of second rate. I have the same version on the b-side of tricky kid and I love it. The harmony between them both is astounding. Martina's voice is truly amazing. If you are new to Tricky and you like what you hear I urge you to check out "Makes me wanna die." It's officially an old song now but I guarantee you will not hear much better!
@KmarkD agreed, this is defintiely way superior to the album version: (a) cos it was one of the less memorable beats on Maxinquaye, which is to no-one's discredit given the sublime standards set by other songs on the album but also (b) it shows just how strong the songwriting is, below Tricky's (genius) production, and they never got enough credit for that. And the interplay of those voices, winding around each other - it's like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, just special.
I remember seeing this live and being reduced to tears. I haven't heard this version since. It is just beautiful. Thank you for finding and posting it xxx
I love it when people say stuff like that! There's no greater joy, on You Tube, than posting something people remember & love but haven't seen since! Thanks for commenting!
If you want it on audio, it's on "later...with jools holland vol. 2 slow jams." it's an import from england and has many trip hop songs from the period in an accoustic version from bjork, neneh cherry, portishead, ben harper, etc.
I've wanted to watch that version of suffocated love forever. It was on the B-side of one of the 'Tricky Kid' singles, and I put it on just about every mixtape I made in school.
I love the disorientated reggae drum-fills. So simple, relaxed, dirty & Tricky.
wheres the autotune, casual misogyny and materealism

argh, the cypress hill interpolation at 4:37 - genius! made their contemporaries look ordinary, even when they patently weren't.
