  • wheres the autotune, casual misogyny and materealism

  • Awesome, i made love to these songs!

  • argh, the cypress hill interpolation at 4:37 - genius! made their contemporaries look ordinary, even when they patently weren't.

  • 3:40 ... Love it! :)

  • WHO'S THAT GIRL??

  • @alison3000elisa martina topley bird

  • This is amazing. Thank you. Can anyone please send me this version of suffocated love or direct me to where I can pull it down.

  • wishing at times like these that youtubes audio wasn't so shittteeeee

  • how un fitting does the backing band look? lols

  • I love the album version of sufocated love but this makes it sound kind of second rate. I have the same version on the b-side of tricky kid and I love it. The harmony between them both is astounding. Martina's voice is truly amazing. If you are new to Tricky and you like what you hear I urge you to check out "Makes me wanna die." It's officially an old song now but I guarantee you will not hear much better!

  • @KmarkD agreed, this is defintiely way superior to the album version: (a) cos it was one of the less memorable beats on Maxinquaye, which is to no-one's discredit given the sublime standards set by other songs on the album but also (b) it shows just how strong the songwriting is, below Tricky's (genius) production, and they never got enough credit for that. And the interplay of those voices, winding around each other - it's like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, just special.

  • Black Steel.

  • I found this by accident

    Its awesome!

    downloading the album now

  • brlliant. thanks smugglertrev. i had this on video years ago but wreckecd it with too many plays.

  • I remember seeing this when it was first shown. It remains my favourite live version of any song I've ever heard. Great song!!

  • Sounds like you should have got out more!

  • the jools holland band is fuckin tight

  • can anybody sent me this version of Suffocated Love?? :-s:-s please

  • thanks alot, I'm a huge fan of Maxinquaye and love hearing these live versions

  • Awesome!....Is this Martina?

  • I remember seeing this live and being reduced to tears. I haven't heard this version since. It is just beautiful. Thank you for finding and posting it xxx

  • All of the comments on this page have made it well worth the effort! Thanks.

  • I love it when people say stuff like that! There's no greater joy, on You Tube, than posting something people remember & love but haven't seen since! Thanks for commenting!

  • Whoa those guys have the punk section all fd up lol.. we need real punks..

  • I know why the caged bird sings, too.

  • I wish I could be stifled

  • wow, "suffocated love" has been my fav tricky song for a while, and i had no idea this version existed! awesome!

  • is there another version on you tube?

  • There's another version-I'd be surprised if it wasn't here, somewhere.

  • If you want it on audio, it's on "later...with jools holland vol. 2 slow jams." it's an import from england and has many trip hop songs from the period in an accoustic version from bjork, neneh cherry, portishead, ben harper, etc.

  • I had never seen this video before, but heard the performance for years on mp3. Thanks for posting it!

  • Quality !!! What a talented bunch of musicians. I to have been seeking this clip for years. Smugglertrev : I thank you !

  • Well I was looking for that version of "black steel" for years. I saw the show 10 years (or more?) ago and now I found it. Thank for sharing

  • the same!!!!

  • Same here...I remember the seasoned session musicians for some reason.

  • I've wanted to watch that version of suffocated love forever. It was on the B-side of one of the 'Tricky Kid' singles, and I put it on just about every mixtape I made in school.

I love the disorientated reggae drum-fills. So simple, relaxed, dirty & Tricky.

    thanksx

  • great version of suffocated love... smoky-ragg

  • It is bloody good, isn't it? In my opinion, this whole performance is top class!

  • yeah man, i love both songs! hard to find high quality live videos and this is just amazing

  • Thanks, very much for saying so. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • I just love this version of suffocated love, man thanks again!
