There were so many pubs opened at least 5 on a street years ago you cant keep that up, jobs have been lost communities have dissapeared and a lot of the regulars that kept these pubs opened are dead. So its no surprise that many are closing. Personaly I am glad maybe years ago pubs near homes was ok but drunken yobs now getting pissed in areas where there are homes aint a good idea.
I played darts in the 50's & 60's in a lot of the Birkenhead pubs. Seeing the Livingstone closed, brings back it's opening. As a young man my local was the Bank of Ireland in Beckwith Street. It was after 'The Bank' was closed the Livingstone opened. Now that's gone. Wonderful memories, wonderful video, thank you
The Observatory has been closed and re-opened several times in the last 5 years. The last time was in 2009 but sadly it remained open for only a few short months before closing again. The Westbourne has now been converted into flats. Meanwhile another famous Birkenhead hostelry "The Dock" on Park Street has been closed for around 12 months and unfortunately caught fire and was severely damaged just after Christmas.
I'm birkenhead born and raised and this video breaks my heart. Had many a good time in a lot of these pubs. The music fits it perfectly and editing is superb. Thanks for putting this together, we've lost a lot of local history but a least we have this visual memory of what once was.
The Crooked Billet has been demolished also in old chester road, only the old house at home now left in that road, Blood tub aka new dock has been demolished. Trurleys in Borough road is gone, once the college was demolished the trade was gone. Had my first pint in The Great Eastern. Shame to see pubs going out like this but its the sign of the times, The old customers have died off and new ones buy cheap ale or go clubbing. Great post.
Go on my channel to see the address for petition against the gov raisng tax on beer, If they do stuff like this I'm moving to a sensible European country like Greece, France or Italy where peopl drink more but only sensibly and the gov doesnt have silly high vat.
i think you an update the video now......as a few of them are now ground zero......smoking ban and breweries.......deprived areas.......the woodside hotel was grade 2 listed....set on fire yet again in the hope of dropping it and building a state of the art hotel with panoramic views of liverpool...any 1 know where i can buy shares?
Hello,Yes these where all great pubs in their day many of which I have been in.Those where the days when pubs where grand pupose built builings with great charator.Tom
very sad video, I dont live on the Wirral now so it brought back some excellent memories of the good old days when the pubs were lively and had bands on most weekends, I used to be a barmaid in a couple of the Tranmere ones, I didn't class it as working , it was fun! how times change! I live in the N/E now and I can assure you it's the same up here, only a few 'real pubs' left now! thanks for posting this!
I for one support the no smoking policy in British pubs, but I'm also definitely saddened by pubs closing in the numbers they are. The thing is, have anything other than 'run down' pubs been closed? Is it purely the price differential between pubs and supermarkets that is causing people to make choices were they drink?
PS - There shouldn't be an apostrophe in 'orders'. Perhaps I'll make a video campaiging about apostropheitis.
The way things are going, I think you'll have to update the video on a regular basis. There seems to be a lot of pubs struggling at the moment. How long can they go on??
about 7 of the pubs featured belong to a company called County Estate Management, I know this because I also rent a pub belonging to them and they do not help their tennants what so ever, so maybe mine might the next one to close.
used to drink and play pool a lot in the woodside hotel, late 70s and early 80s,shame it shut, and recently set ablaze, shame about the great eastern to in new ferry, both the stanley and the rake pubs recently reopened in eastham,so theres some hope
A great idea to record this before the old pubs dissappear. Tranmere pubs I remember best. I worked in Lairds and used to go in the Harp to see my Grandad and Uncles. I think the fortunes of the Tranmere pubs eventually followed those of the shipyard. All of those pubs would be packed at lunch times and Friday afternoons when thousands of blokes would stream out of the Green Lane gate, a few hundred would slip into the local pubs for a quick pint or several. Thanks for posting this.
They Antis call that 'Leveling The Playing Field'. Just hold out a few more years, they say, and the non-smokers will 'eventually' RUSH in to fill the current void left by the smoking customers (smokers are known to be generous tippers too). So now old faithful, profitable bars and pubs are now closing their doors forever, just like all the rest of private enterprises. Nobody will PAY to be treated like a criminal, persecuted and hounded by Nazis, or hang out with a bunch of old nagging hags.
Hello,I would say that a lot of people who drink alcohol also smoke too.People who smoke are now put off going to a pub so this is affecting trade.Smokers are now being criminalised and this is encouraged by goverment policy. They think they know what is best for us under their nanny state. Its all to do with saving money in future national health treatment as well.I am by the way a non smoker.
Well I certainly agree my friend. I've scratched the UK off of my list of friendly travel destinations until freedom is restored. I don't however expect to see that happening anytime soon, especially if England becomes a satellite state of the EU. God Save The Queen!
So sad that all these great pubs are gone.

I think it is part of losing the whole working class communities that were in Birkenhead before the loss of jobs and industry in the area.

It isn't, its the big brewery chains who are doing the damage. Overpriced Ale and extortionate rents.

Very sad state of affairs; some of these pubs will never reopen now that they have been demolished. The Tranmere Park and Josie Ryans to name a few.
To add to the lis, the New Dock on Stanley Road in the North End has now gone (practically) and the Crooked Billet has been boarded up.
Reassuringly, I saw that the Seven Stiles by the Ford reopened the other week. But for how long?
