@electrickithara Catherine of Aragon is been dumped, back to Spain with her? It had to be anonymous because the mockery came from her husband. The Tudor Bluebeard
I love this piece and the way you play it. Is there an mp3 version available? I looked at the two sites mentioned on your video's but could not find it.
Only now I recognize this is the woman of one of my favorite and cheap cds. The Trio Sonatas (J.S. Bach, originally for organ) in an arrangement for guitar and harpsichord.
The most fantastic sounds come out of that harpsichord. And yes this a great swinging tune too!
Dump, Dumpe or Dompe is actually a Elizabethan dance that originated in the lower classes. There are a few renaissance composers that used this form, including John Johnsone. This is a dance accompanied by the lute.
The "right' tempo is what works! If it sounds contemporary, that's the highest praise for my performance. What good is music if it doesn't have life in the moment?
I loved your explanation at the beginning. Your playing is as always non plus ultra! I love this piece and have students play it often. Thank you so much for playing it.
You should make a power metal band :$ hahaha I would love it
You are awesome :)

This is such a cool song, it's ideal for the plucked keyboard. Of course it has to be of Anglo-Saxon origin.

A few people were asking about the title:
“Dompe”: a 16th century english term to denote a mournful or plaintive melody or song; also a tune in general; sometimes
apparently used for a kind of dance (Oxford English Dictionary)
withindarkness 1 year ago
@withindarkness i bet if we heard it being played back at the time, it would be a bit slower than this performance.
this was played almost in the style of some gypsy song hehe~
this performance was interesting to hear, but it doesnt have that english sound to it in my opinion

Somebody once told me that the old English word dompe meant depression. Does anyone know if that is true?

I can't be sure but I knew a lemming once who killed himself after he got domped by his girlfriend.

That's definitely the right tempo - on harpsichord, lute, guitar, they all should be played at the same tempo

Princess Elizabeth (as portrayed by the fabulous Glenda Jackson) was seen playing this piece in the BBC serial Elizabeth R, episode 1.
Brilliant performance, and I love the dramatic contrast afforded by the use of the lute stop.
