Freedom at home, near-slavery in the countries where you invest your money, which then you bring back home with proffits that are untaxed. And when the local pawns ask for a bigger share of the pie, you ask NATO to bring them down and put a more convenient puppet in place (see Khadaffi recently). Yep a functionning recipe, for a time.
I believe that this is true, but this video's sources for the information in it both come from Wikipedia... I can just make shit up on that site... I need more reliable sources before I repeat it!
The huge problem with this video is that the population of the US is many times larger than any of the middle eastern nation quoted. Per person, the 2008 GDP for oil-rich Qatar is more than DOUBLE the United States. The only reason that the US has such a high nominal GDP is that they have by far the largest population of any comparable developed nation. P.S. I am in no way bashing the market system but the author's use of GDP stats is very misleading.
face it no ones seeing the gold in Qatar. or in any of the other arabs states just mentioned. in the us the wealth distribution is much more greater as you know. parasite.
where do you get that liberals hate the usa.being arogant about the usa is not a virtue.when a liberal sees that the right and thier emperors have no clothesdoes not mean liberals hate the usa.liberals have done more for liberty: womens vote, child labor laws, work safety, adl, public education, and thelist goes on.what have antiliberals done for liberty ?
Italy has been rebuilded by US companies and now, toghether with Portugal and Greece, one of the poorest EU's states
"Democracy" and freedom are very important but maybe "free" market has still some problems, one of them is that is not free at all, the second is that it produces lots of trash and can work only if people consume forever and if economy is endless growing
About democracy, I wonder if choosing your king and let him do what he's agreed to do with his founders can be called democracy
Buy low and sell high. Lot's of intelligence involved for that. After making your big bucks you can go back home and watch the idiot tube, beat up the wife for not sucking your dick and making you a sandwich. After working hard for that paper degree of contrived crap that's not scientific you too can become a glorified salesman (er CEO) if you are an aggressive psychopath. Either that or work at some job that a moronic trained chimp can do while the environment gets more polluted...
the free economy bit isn't very true. the US openly admits that it is a mixed economy, so why do people keep repeating that its a "free market". Further more, government intervention and spending were criticaly important in why the country is as powerful as it is.
this video is ridiculous, we generate more income than any other country because we privatize all of their industries through the world bank, then our companies buy their industries and use their productivity for the benefit of american companies. the cia isnt a tool of freedom, it is a tool of repression, they either pay off government or assassinate them.
It's as mixed as a a cup of tea with sugar in it is mixed with sugar... It's a free market, because there is such a small amount of regulation at this time. It also doesn't regulate in unusual areas and call it "fair", that's when you start talking about non-free markets, like those promoted by socialists like Obama.
It is not a free market, and its not really a matter of opinion. Its a mixed economy. I cannot think of an industry that is not regulated, and a large percentage of the economy is government expenditure. Its is NOT a command economy, but it is also NOT a free market economy.
It is a free market, and I never said anything was a matter of opinion. A mixed market, is a free market, it doesn't need to be unregulated to be free, just as the people can be free with a legal system.. you don't need anarchy. That's the definition of a free market, only the perfect market could exist outside regulation, and they are impossible on account of human stupidity, limited resources and all the laws of physics...
I did not say that a country must have absolutely no regulation or government intervention to be a "free market economy". And by your detention, the soviet union was "free market" because even it had some degree of market decision making. These words are relative and are value terms. I I would argue that the US is a mixed economy, and I said it wasn't a matter of our opinions because you can look up in a encyclopedia what type of economy the US has and it would say mixed .
hitide286. Kurva anyád! Our choice my ass. Idiot. Btw USA is not even a nation. It just exists because the world wants it this way...to sell their garbege to someone. Like the Chinese. In 100 years you will be all Mexicans anyway...USM. You cant realy stop population dinamics and nature. You just dont know shit.
This just shows how unequal the distribution of wealth is. USA also uses the most energy and resources by FAR! If everybody would be like the avrege US citizen, we wouldnt have a planet by now. Selfish people.
Interesting coming from a country that "stayed" neutral during the war, after all the help Spain got from Hitler during the Spanish Civil war, and many countries sent "volunteers" to other countries to fight. Find it strange that you "brag" how Spain fought for the Germans & Russians,,only cowards with no courage do not pick a side to stand on..that's all..and of course there was that "massive" Spanish aid program after the war to help Europe out, what was it called?
Im not disputing the facts. I'm saying that people who release videos like this and want to think they're intelligent should not be referencing an open sourced encyclopedia. It's just common sense.
I don't even know where the Soviet attacks came from.
In fact Europe did not need americas help so much as america needed to get her loaf of bread in the end of the WW II. Soviet Union, England and france would finish germany anyway! In fact all the shit and struggle was on Soviet forces. It is just propoganda, that says that USA had a great impact on war, all they did was destrying Japan. Europeans did the hard work, USA came and took what does not belong to them.
do you smoke pot?? crack?? my grandfather help liberate eroupe on d-day go look and see who made up most of the troops , the only thing u ero's did was bend over for hitler!! you have to be the dumbest mother fucker ive seen on you tube
bad facts; 12/12/08 Euro = 1.31 dollars, and falling, bbl. oil< $40USD, by summer of 2009 Euro will be on par with USD...who rebuilt the German, Italian, French, Japanese markets after WW2/..the Russians?
Spain...LOL oh yes when the world is in truble needs food , medicine, clean water, Spain with her mighty navy & airforce is always there first..first maybe for a handout..hey brave job you guys did in WW2..didn't think so many cowards could live in the same country.!!
obviously you are a simple ignorant american and you dont know that Spain had a civil war since 1936 to 1939 and Spain was destroyed when the 2WW started, and Germany and the URSS used that civil war as a train for the 2WW. btw I THINK u need a lil bit of information about the DIVISION AZUL (BLUE DIVISION). Thousands of volunteers from SPAIN that helped Germany in Russia and other battles with war planes.
But everybody knows who r the most coward persons in the WORLD, the RAPIST MARINES.
Franco went to bed with the Germans, so stop you "holier than thou crap"..Spain knew it was easier to make a "deal" with the devil than to fight him...but in all fairness the Spanish underground helped a lot of Allied pilots get back to their countries, at great pearl to themselves..
Hmmm...looks like a pretty intense economic dick measuring contest. What is the point of this video? Is it's economy all that comprises a nation? I can certainly think of a few things I'm not proud of about my country.
Ohh man, that's dumb, we need a little bit of keynesian economics to regulate market and I'm completely favor to free market, it's great for society and economy, but not favor to unfair comercial deals.
I believe it's the famous quote from one of Bill Clinton's campaign advisors when he was running for President the first time. Turned the campaign around.
I dont really see where most of this matters. Is this suppose to make us feel better that we cant afford housing in the US or if your on the other side cant sell your house. Its all realitive to the cost of living. The out put is greater but the cost of living is greater. that my 2 cents
I agree with what you are saying. I don't think I was meaning what you think. No owning a big house is not a right and yes ever one should live with in their means. But if living within your means puts you where your only option is renting an apartment because a reasonable 3 bed room 2 bath house @1800 sf cost 150k plus it kind of sucks. (to be continued)
If you are not aware their is a large economic proplem currently going on. Part of it is because people who can live decent if they live within their means choose not to and another problem is that many people cant live decent with in their means. I don't know you but I would guess that maybe you don't relate. Maybe you can do a little more research on the wages in America and what the vast majority of people make.
I don't know you, but maybe you are in the better category of earning, maybe you are among the +-20% of Americans who have a college degree, (which I am currently working on mine), and maybe if it were not for the family you came from things would be harder for you. Sometimes life is hard even for the people who are living within their means, working as hard as they can, doing the right things.
It seems the creator of this video has something against how economics, politics, etc. are taught in universities. Why? Because they present a version of reality that is not 100% pro-American propaganda all the time? No one doubts the economic strength of the USA, or that America is based on some great ideas. But simply presenting (somewhat misleading) facts like these misses the point of an education. University should teach students "how" to think, not "what" to think.
I think you're right on most counts, but I also think this video does present a new way of "how" to think about the US economy and other economies. I found it to be more "how" than "what" at least.
Try disagreeing with a college professor on policital issues and see how much they value thinking that they didn't spoon feed you.
Yeah, anyone who actually looks at the Universities in a realistic way will see that they are very liberal, both in number of professors and in the text books. In helping my son in 12th grade economics they put liberal propaganda into the explanations of different tax systems, calling a straight sales tax as progressive taxation.
I was a government & politics major, so I have interacted with many professors on political issues. It's not all liberal, but the more complex ideas tend to be. I had a social ethics professor that insisted moral objectivism was the only correct way, which would suggest she was trying to spoon feed us propaganda about the existence of God as a lawgiver. Guess what, plenty of people in the class challenged her on it, including myself.
I have a problem with your statement that the more complex ideas tend to be liberal. Are you making the statement that conservative ideas need to be simple?
Moral objectivism or moderate moral realism is the position that certain acts are objectively right or wrong. You don't have to spout religion, just there are right and wrongs, where is the propaganda? I'm sure it's not all liberal, 95% might be the right number. Do you challenge a liberal when they propagandize?
Conservative ideas tend to be more simple because they usually support the status quo, which is already in place. It's more simple to not try to progressively advance, than to try to advance.
Moral objectivism must assume some higher law giver, otherwise you simply have cultural relativism or subjectivism. Absolute right requires absolute authority.
I am a social libertarian and a loose supporter of keynesian economics. I'll let you decide how "liberal" that is.
All the facts on the video are true, except one: Germany was already a large economy even BEFORE 1st World War, without any of these american bullshit presented on the video. In fact, the grow up of nazi/fascist groups were largely influenced by the complete failure of the american liberalist economics (1929 crash).
It is not surprising at all that the US is by far the largest economy and the second one only a third of the size. The population of Japan is only -roughly- a third of the USA.
If you take GDP/capita, the USA is 'only' ranked 10th to 12th (depending on the source)
If you adjust the country's GDP for purchasing power parities (ppp), the second (China) is already 50% of the USA.
If you take GDP/capita and correct for PPP, you get USA on 4th to 8th spot.
Obviously when comparing economic well-being of countries you would need to look at GDP per CAPITA. You would also need to look at the distribution of income - how much money does the richest 10% make compared to the poorest 10%? The facts in the video may be true but they are MISLEADING. And what do you have against teachers??? I teach economics. And I do teach students that the USA is an economic superpower. But what I DON'T do is mislead my students about what this means.
Are you part of the middle class who is struggling to make ends meet? I am here to help. Visit my youtube page today to find out how you can make money online.
Thanks for posting. This video shows America is the greatest place in the world to live. We have more freedom and opportunities than can be found anywhere. That equates to the impressive facts shown in the video.
funny american. I'm an economist. Do you really think, for determining whether the country is good to live, the GDP is only matter? oh please. There is also Gross National Happiness (GNH). Please go to other counties. You will see what is the criteria for determining that.
1) in 1776 the founding fathers originally purposed a mod rule (kind of government).
2) His economical statistics are based on expenditures, so most European/Asian market(which are more investment/saving) will seem meager. By basing the determinate on expenditures any country that over spends(like america) will seem booming, for example if that measurement were implemented in the depression it would seem as if one didn't exist.
Ok but this begs the big question: if the system works so well (and it does) why is there so much poverty, urban ugliness and environmental destruction amid so much wealth and productive capacity? The Founders got it right as far as they went but they did not complete the job as evidenced by slavery and, now, the huge disparity of wealth. We solved slavery and now its time to share the unearned wealth starting with the value of land which is entirely created by the community and not "owners".
Oh conservative one do you also mean to say that reparations should not be given to former slave owners who complained bitterly at the injustice done to them? If so, good for you. That would settle that old conservative complaint. But it hardly matters since you seem to imply that the world has been conquered by the strong,it is theirs to exploit in the name of some sacred right and it will not be given back no matter the consequences to humanity or the planet. Happy trails.
Well in fact the Slave Owners shouldnt have recieved compensation for slaves lost. They should have probably been compensated for their Plantations being burned to the ground along with all of their crops but not for the Slaves themselves.
As a point of fact the (Dixie-Crats) were the slave owners and the (Republicans) came about in opposition to Slavery and Dixie-Crat rule in the South.
Dem Senator Robert C. Byrd: Joined the Klan at age 24 and was a Proud Member for many years. Google it
This video isn't shocking but confusing! Of course USA has more GDP than Germany and Japan together, but they have together "only" 200 million inhabitants. The USA has 300 million. In GDP (PPP) per capita USA only ranked 8th. Also USA has good climate conditions and natural resources. The reason why a country is rich is very complicated. You can't reduce it to freedom!
Yeah, i highly doubt this is the case anymore. Perhaps instead of trying to get us to make our teachers 'aware' you should become aware of the amount of crap you're churning out here.
Yawn...the U.S. economy was NEVER based on a "free market economy". In the 19th century and much of the 20th, the U.S., Germany (Second Reich), and Japan were highly protectionistic as in TARIFFS!!!! (German and Japan adopted the American System of Hamilton and Clay). Right now free-trade is destroying America because of neoliberal capitalist dumbasses like you.
The fact is that there is no damn perfect system of government and I would definitly rather live in America than anywhere else in the world. Another fact is that the American system of "free trade" is the closest thing to actual free trade people are going to get and if u dont like it move to Russia.
your point is you would like to just keep getting ripped off by the oil companies and not do anything about it..its not free trade, its price gouging. stop defendng it. BTW, if all these things are so true, then this country, above all others, can afford to take care of their poor and middle classes.
We would we need to take care of our middle class and yes if you are to sick to work we should take care of you to a certain extent but we also have alot of people taking advantage of the system as well and I notice Liberals like yourself never address that?
If it were not for the Companies there would be no economy. I heard a list of companies and industries that have much higher profit margins and it was shocking.
neoliberal is one of those rush limbaugh terms that has been popularized. that alone makes you a dumbass. And the US has always had a market economy. Tariffs are a different issue.
it would be a retarded video if those things werent true...This point also ignores the fact that Germany and Japan were highly efficient and productive BEFORE World War II. IN fact, Japan's need for more natural resources was one of the reasons they clashed with the US. Other than that, what point does this make? Does it mean we should not be good to other nations? Does it mean we should invade them and Bless them with our way of life..ask Iraq if that works...
This video was meant to explain the myths that people are getting told everyday. I am a 16 year old high school student and all i hear about is how China is getting so strong and that our economy is going to collapse because of lack of oil. This video shows how the media will tell the American public whatever the hell they feel like just to get a story. China's economy is greatly increasing and sure oil is bad, but its so overly exagerated its not even funny.
Ah, yes. Very interesting. But what you're not revealing as that in the United States, wealth is highly concentrated in a relatively few hands. As of 2001, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 33.4% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 51%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 84%,leaving only 16% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers). Tell your teachers that.
If the nitwit teachers had made accounting mandatory in our so called schools 40 or 50 years ago would we have this problem now? Of course the economist have been ignoring the depreciation of all the junk designed to fall apart during those years.
Go into debt. Buy your way into slavery. Pay for education that wastes your time on nonsense.
hold the mother fuken mother fukn lian assed wtf phone. Were i n a deeeeedp fukn debt and weree goen bk,yeah my facts are made out of the air but i know i m right and you sir are an idiot and a liar
u cant't compare the usa ( almost a continent) to a country (part of a continent)... if u want to do something smart compare the USA with the UN- u'll get shocking results.
The total economic output of the UN is barely greater than that of the United States, and that's what makes the United States great, its actually freakin united. UN has the task of somehow united over a thousand different languages and ethnic groups, which they have not accomplished. I don't think its even possible. Each country in the UN is looking out for themselves, where the United States is one large united economy, even if made up of seperate states. "United" States of America!
The depreciation of an automobile by itself tells you nothing about the economy. An automobile has an economic benefit - lets say that I work in a big city. Let's also say that living in the burbs will save me 12,000 a year in rent compared to in the city. However, I need a car to live in the burbs and commute. All things considered (gas, insurance, depreciation, etc) an inexpensive car costs far less than 12,000 a year, making it economically beneficial to own one, despite its depreciation.
GDP nonsense is used to measure that economic output. So every heart surgery case contributes to GDP. So a country with less heart disease because of less obesity might have lower GDP because of less heart disease. And this is BAD?
What about the depreciation from manufacturing garbage that is ignored even though it was added to GDP?
Well heart disease might explain a small gap, but did you notice the gap is trillions and trillions of dollars? The US economy is just a juggernaught.
Have you ever noticed anyone talk about how much Americans lose on automobile depreciation every year? Anyone ever calculate the total time spent watching commercials?
Maybe you need to separate nationalism from economics and ask what percentage of the population has homes payed for? The US has a relatively low population density. Why doesn't everyone have homes payed for by now?
Depreciation on cars and time spent watching commercials is sort of a sign of our nation's strength. We can afford for this to happen. Nations too poor to afford cars or have TV's don't have those problems you see.
So if people had not wasted money on crappy cars and payed off mortgages instead and we didn't have all of these foreclosures then the nation would be worse off in your opinion?
The nation would not be worse of, but the point is about freedoms. Our country and economy give people the freedoms to do great things and also silly things. The US economy is strong. Strongest ever.
Why require kids to study Shakespeare but not take an accounting course? Might that cause them to not do so many silly things?
We have created a stupid consumer culture where most people are supposed to sabotage themselves with foolishness and some dummies that think they are smart promote this crap.
But the lying economists don't report the depreciation of all of the crapmobiles every year.
Sorry US, your time is over. I don't see how you can be an economic superpower and pride yourself on dominating world market, when the whole reason you are on top is by exploiting the labor of people abroad for profit and even within your own country poverty, terrible access to basic needs for each person and horrid minimum wages. Fix your money driven attitudes before you drive yourselves from recession and into another depression.
We need to change the system from the inside out, subtlety, for the economic emancipation of the masses, where TRUE freedom rests! Check out the Center for Economic and Social Justice and binary economics. Don't let the elitists bring our society down!
this info is already outdated... the decrease value of the dollar makes all these figures absolutely irrelevant. and I agree with gollywog. it wont be long now till the country is on its knees from a complete economic recession. Maybe a better education system could have prevented many of the wrong turns that the US made over the last few decades
I bet the video does not take into account the opium industry in Afghanistan. It is something like 90% of the worlds opium production. Can anyone clarify?
this is old news. And it is done with regards to nominal instead of PPP GDP data. Also alot of the more important things to understand are say compounding increases. a Country A with half the GDP of Country B but with a 10% difference in GDP growth can catch up in a matter of a decade or so. Whats more important is understanding future projections than the current position.
Because the population of the EU is roughly comparable to that of the US. As illustrated in this video many US states are the same size of developed/developing nations, in terms of population and output, that is why economists look in terms of GDP per head NOT total output.
Utter rubbish, statistics like this are purely sensationalist. Look @ GDP per person figures for a more accurate picture of the world, this video seems to forget the US have 3 times the population of many developed nations, Luxembourg, Ireland and Norway are all above the US in GDP per person, economies famously built on American principles?

How bizarre! Never is mentioned the very fact that an entire continent, well preserved, might have helped the whole process. Extraordinary. An economy of transformation that does not bother about the amount of matter available to be transformed. Ummmm well...
So demand creates value, and some countries' currency is worth more than others. What if there was a universal currency, and demand no longer mattered? I mean, we arbitrarily assign value to anything being sold, and then alter prices to meet the changes in supply/demand. If Krogers is selling apples for $2 and Ukrops is selling for $1, r Ukrops apples any different? What if they were both selling apples for $1? OMG, how would we decide?!!
american economy is going down the toilet pot. the dollar has lost approx 60% of its value in 3 years. way to go!!! your over spending in iraq and afganistan and are now entering a recession. but continue watching that stupid video - it makes you feel good.
the american dream...ahhahaha...you have to be asleep to beleive it.
This stuff isn't shocking at all. Everybody knows US has a massive GDP output, although I'm not quite sure where it comes from. Guess its all in financials and services. Oh and growth rate only like %2 or %3.
Contributing to Japan & Germany's growth is fact that under their terms of surrender they weren't allowed to build up large militaries after WW2, so all taxes went to developing the countries' infrastructures & other things able to give the Economy a boost.
Built on US policy? Maybe to an extent. Japans monitary policy has been a shambles since the early 90's though...
As any economist will tell you, the wealth of a nation is not solely measured in GDP.
USA might be the biggest economy of the world, but it is also the largest polutor, though China is probably going to pass you on that. The costs that the american way has on the world is immense.
First of all, they're not stats they're questions that you simply cannot answer. The answer is yes; the United States is the largest debtor and has the largest trade deficit; although since the dollar is weakening the trade deficit is shrinking.
Based on the GDP figures published by the International Monetary Fund, and the U.S Bureau of Economic Analysis, everything in the clip is true. I checked it, because I thought it wasn't accurate. I stand corrected.
Auctions are back in business at present and you won't have to look far for a bargain at the moment. The credit crisis has increased the number of forced sales and therefore the opportunities massively. With the right finance provider profitable property investments are within the reach of most people.
Probably 40% of America's GDP consists of local, state, and federal government "output". If we measure GDP by the output of "real" goods and services that contribute to a reasonable lifestyle, then the numbers change radically. The "output" of a few million government bureaucrats staring at a wall does nothing to enhance the lifestyle of a teacher, window washer, doctor, or waiter. Subtract the GDP "value" of the work of people who do nothing. What's left?
Then why is the U.S. borrowing from China to finance the illegal Iraq occupation? Is it to get a better credit rating? Why do we have starving poor, working poor & bad health care? You forgot to mention 1% of the extremely, greedy wealthy control all U.S. bucks. U could mention how the U.S. subjugates other countries' people & resources, & our CIA deposes, or murders, nation leaders who don't comply with the U.S. We R all slaves to the a few powerful warmongers, which is far from' freedom.'
LMAO, ok, China is the fastest growing nation in economic power and will surpass the U.S. in less than 50 years, also America is in debt by trillions of dollars, so even though we make a lot, we still have to give it back, easy come, easy go.
economic output? our economy is entrenched to china. Most of the products we buy are made in foreign countries. Since many foreign economies are pegged to the dollar, a bady day for us means a bad day for them which makes an even worse day for us. the economic output for rhode island is bases on the sales of products made in foreign countries.
I enjoyed the video. It would be nice to see the data or at least know where it came from. I think this chat thread shows how divided we have become as Americans. Let's ditch the rhetoric and work together to maintain our strong economy. We should probably take a good hard look at the Constitution. As for the war, I believe that everyone is worth the costs of freedom.
Thanks, I didn't see them the first time. They are still too small for me to read. Can you list them? It looks like it says online references or something??? Maybe a link, and who puts out the data?
Don't you get it? Our country and economy prevent economic slavery. America invented "rags to riches," it is almost impossible to move up in class in many countries.
'We look at GDP numbers to reassure ourselves that all is well, yet a growing number of Americans still do not enjoy the higher standard of living that monetary inflation brings to the privileged few. Those few have access to the newly created money first, before its value is diluted.
For example: Before the breakdown of the Bretton Woods system, CEO income was about 30 times the average worker's pay. Today, it's closer to 500 times. It's hard to explain this simply by market forces and increases in productivity. One Wall Street firm last year gave out bonuses totaling $16.5 billion. There's little evidence that this represents free market capitalism.
What we fail to understand is how much government entitlement spending contributes to the increase in the GDP. Rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by hurricanes, which simply gets us back to even, is considered part of GDP growth. Wall Street profits and salaries, pumped up by the Fed's increase in money, also contribute to GDP statistical growth. Just buying military weapons that contribute nothing to the well being of our citizens, sending money down a rat hole, contributes to GDP growth!
This is a lame video. When comparing economies between nations, the standard measure is GDP per head. By that measure, the America, although the largest economy in the world, is neither the richest nor weathiest.

"Democracy" and freedom are very important but maybe "free" market has still some problems, one of them is that is not free at all, the second is that it produces lots of trash and can work only if people consume forever and if economy is endless growing
About democracy, I wonder if choosing your king and let him do what he's agreed to do with his founders can be called democracy

the free economy bit isn't very true. the US openly admits that it is a mixed economy, so why do people keep repeating that its a "free market". Further more, government intervention and spending were criticaly important in why the country is as powerful as it is.
Bremahhah 2 years ago
this video is ridiculous, we generate more income than any other country because we privatize all of their industries through the world bank, then our companies buy their industries and use their productivity for the benefit of american companies. the cia isnt a tool of freedom, it is a tool of repression, they either pay off government or assassinate them.
SirSensimilla 2 years ago
amen
Bremahhah 2 years ago
It's as mixed as a a cup of tea with sugar in it is mixed with sugar... It's a free market, because there is such a small amount of regulation at this time. It also doesn't regulate in unusual areas and call it "fair", that's when you start talking about non-free markets, like those promoted by socialists like Obama.
DreadLaw2 2 years ago
It is not a free market, and its not really a matter of opinion. Its a mixed economy. I cannot think of an industry that is not regulated, and a large percentage of the economy is government expenditure. Its is NOT a command economy, but it is also NOT a free market economy.
Bremahhah 2 years ago
It is a free market, and I never said anything was a matter of opinion. A mixed market, is a free market, it doesn't need to be unregulated to be free, just as the people can be free with a legal system.. you don't need anarchy. That's the definition of a free market, only the perfect market could exist outside regulation, and they are impossible on account of human stupidity, limited resources and all the laws of physics...
DreadLaw2 2 years ago
I did not say that a country must have absolutely no regulation or government intervention to be a "free market economy". And by your detention, the soviet union was "free market" because even it had some degree of market decision making. These words are relative and are value terms. I I would argue that the US is a mixed economy, and I said it wasn't a matter of our opinions because you can look up in a encyclopedia what type of economy the US has and it would say mixed .

I dont really see where most of this matters. Is this suppose to make us feel better that we cant afford housing in the US or if your on the other side cant sell your house. Its all realitive to the cost of living. The out put is greater but the cost of living is greater. that my 2 cents
Todd4562 3 years ago
Can't afford housing? People just need to live within their means. Owning a big house isn't a right. Rent an apartment.
tubetraveler41 3 years ago
I agree with what you are saying. I don't think I was meaning what you think. No owning a big house is not a right and yes ever one should live with in their means. But if living within your means puts you where your only option is renting an apartment because a reasonable 3 bed room 2 bath house @1800 sf cost 150k plus it kind of sucks. (to be continued)
Todd4562 3 years ago
If you are not aware their is a large economic proplem currently going on. Part of it is because people who can live decent if they live within their means choose not to and another problem is that many people cant live decent with in their means. I don't know you but I would guess that maybe you don't relate. Maybe you can do a little more research on the wages in America and what the vast majority of people make.
Todd4562 3 years ago
I don't know you, but maybe you are in the better category of earning, maybe you are among the +-20% of Americans who have a college degree, (which I am currently working on mine), and maybe if it were not for the family you came from things would be harder for you. Freedom from indoctrination is so important to education.
americastandingtall 3 years ago
It seems the creator of this video has something against how economics, politics, etc. are taught in universities. Why? Because they present a version of reality that is not 100% pro-American propaganda all the time? No one doubts the economic strength of the USA, or that America is based on some great ideas. But simply presenting (somewhat misleading) facts like these misses the point of an education. University should teach students "how" to think, not "what" to think.
HungryNomadicLion 3 years ago
I think you're right on most counts, but I also think this video does present a new way of "how" to think about the US economy and other economies. I found it to be more "how" than "what" at least.
rburk41 3 years ago
Hey HungryNomadicLion,
Try disagreeing with a college professor on policital issues and see how much they value thinking that they didn't spoon feed you.
Yeah, anyone who actually looks at the Universities in a realistic way will see that they are very liberal, both in number of professors and in the text books. In helping my son in 12th grade economics they put liberal propaganda into the explanations of different tax systems, calling a straight sales tax as progressive taxation.
stevewzorn 3 years ago
I was a government & politics major, so I have interacted with many professors on political issues. It's not all liberal, but the more complex ideas tend to be. I had a social ethics professor that insisted moral objectivism was the only correct way, which would suggest she was trying to spoon feed us propaganda about the existence of God as a lawgiver. Guess what, plenty of people in the class challenged her on it, including myself.
You are only a sheep if you let yourself be.
HungryNomadicLion 3 years ago
Hi again HungryNomadicLion,
I have a problem with your statement that the more complex ideas tend to be liberal.
Do you challenge a liberal when they propagandize?
stevewzorn 3 years ago
Conservative ideas tend to be more simple because they usually support the status quo, which is already in place. It's more simple to not try to progressively advance, than to try to advance.
Moral objectivism must assume some higher law giver, otherwise you simply have cultural relativism or subjectivism. Absolute right requires absolute authority.
I am a social libertarian and a loose supporter of keynesian economics. I'll let you decide how "liberal" that is.
p.s. I hate hippies.
HungryNomadicLion 3 years ago
All the facts on the video are true, except one: Germany was already a large economy even BEFORE 1st World War, without any of these american bullshit presented on the video. In fact, the grow up of nazi/fascist groups were largely influenced by the complete failure of the american liberalist economics (1929 crash).
nintyceo 3 years ago
It is not surprising at all that the US is by far the largest economy and the second one only a third of the size. The population of Japan is only -roughly- a third of the USA.
If you take GDP/capita, the USA is 'only' ranked 10th to 12th (depending on the source)
If you adjust the country's GDP for purchasing power parities (ppp), the second (China) is already 50% of the USA.
If you take GDP/capita and correct for PPP, you get USA on 4th to 8th spot.
Which tells more than GDP alone.
Shorackoff 3 years ago
Obviously when comparing economic well-being of countries you would need to look at GDP per CAPITA. You would also need to look at the distribution of income - how much money does the richest 10% make compared to the poorest 10%? The facts in the video may be true but they are MISLEADING. And what do you have against teachers??? I teach economics. And I do teach students that the USA is an economic superpower. But what I DON'T do is mislead my students about what this means.

rburk41 3 years ago
The two majors facts he got wrong were,
1) in 1776 the founding fathers originally purposed a mod rule (kind of government).

Reparations should not and will not be given.
ConservativeAtheist 3 years ago
Oh conservative one do you also mean to say that reparations should not be given to former slave owners who complained bitterly at the injustice done to them? If so, good for you. That would settle that old conservative complaint. But it hardly matters since you seem to imply that the world has been conquered by the strong,it is theirs to exploit in the name of some sacred right and it will not be given back no matter the consequences to humanity or the planet. Happy trails.
ourearthhome 3 years ago
Well in fact the Slave Owners shouldnt have recieved compensation for slaves lost. They should have probably been compensated for their Plantations being burned to the ground along with all of their crops but not for the Slaves themselves.
As a point of fact the (Dixie-Crats) were the slave owners and the (Republicans) came about in opposition to Slavery and Dixie-Crat rule in the South.

Right now free-trade is destroying America because of neoliberal capitalist dumbasses like you.
mujaku 3 years ago
The fact is that there is no damn perfect system of government and I would definitly rather live in America than anywhere else in the world. Another fact is that the American system of "free trade" is the closest thing to actual free trade people are going to get and if u dont like it move to Russia.
mastaofjayhawks 3 years ago 2
your point is you would like to just keep getting ripped off by the oil companies and not do anything about it..its not free trade, its price gouging. stop defendng it. neoliberal is one of those rush limbaugh terms that has been popularized. that alone makes you a dumbass. And the US has always had a market economy. Tariffs are a different issue.
tallcoolone1 3 years ago
it would be a retarded video if those things werent true...This point also ignores the fact that Germany and Japan were highly efficient and productive BEFORE World War II. IN fact, Japan's need for more natural resources was one of the reasons they clashed with the US. Other than that, what point does this make? Does it mean we should not be good to other nations? Does it mean we should invade them and Bless them with our way of life..ask Iraq if that works...
tallcoolone1 3 years ago
This video was meant to explain the myths that people are getting told everyday. I am a 16 year old high school student and all i hear about is how China is getting so strong and that our economy is going to collapse because of lack of oil. This video shows how the media will tell the American public whatever the hell they feel like just to get a story. China's economy is greatly increasing and sure oil is bad, but its so overly exagerated its not even funny.
mastaofjayhawks 3 years ago

What about the depreciation from manufacturing garbage that is ignored even though it was added to GDP?
psikeyhackr 3 years ago
Well heart disease might explain a small gap, but did you notice the gap is trillions and trillions of dollars? The US economy is just a juggernaught.
rorydugan 3 years ago
Have you ever noticed anyone talk about how much Americans lose on automobile depreciation every year? Anyone ever calculate the total time spent watching commercials?
Maybe you need to separate nationalism from economics and ask what percentage of the population has homes payed for? The US has a relatively low population density. Why doesn't everyone have homes payed for by now?
psikeyhackr 3 years ago
Depreciation on cars and time spent watching commercials is sort of a sign of our nation's strength. We can afford for this to happen. Nations too poor to afford cars or have TV's don't have those problems you see.

So if people had not wasted money on crappy cars and payed off mortgages instead and we didn't have all of these foreclosures then the nation would be worse off in your opinion?

Why require kids to study Shakespeare but not take an accounting course? Might that cause them to not do so many silly things?

this is old news.

In fact China is the number 2 economy and is set to over take USA within 8 years at curreny growth rates
cobbler115 3 years ago
Many of those facts are no longer true
cobbler115 3 years ago 2

This was quite shocking. Although entirely true as far as i can tell, i think there is some important stuff left out here.
rorydugan 3 years ago
This stuff isn't shocking at all. Everybody knows US has a massive GDP output, although I'm not quite sure where it comes from. Guess its all in financials and services. Oh and growth rate only like %2 or %3.

think China has taken over Germany to be number 3 now
redhothits 3 years ago

Here's some shocking questions: who has the greatest trade deficit? who is the largest debtor nation?
bollagi 3 years ago
You have to look as debt as a percentage of GDP, otherwise, your stats are meaningless.
So, if you want to be rhetorical suggesting the United States; it is not.
Advocate1234 3 years ago
First of all, they're not stats they're questions that you simply cannot answer. The answer is yes; the United States is the largest debtor and has the largest trade deficit; although since the dollar is weakening the trade deficit is shrinking.
bollagi 3 years ago 2
And again, you cannot say "largest" unless you look at percentages.
Advocate1234 3 years ago
It really doesn't matter whether I look at the percentages or not--I'm not talking about relative percentages.
bollagi 3 years ago
Okay?
Advocate1234 3 years ago
Okay?
United States: 12,249,418
United Kingdom: 8,280,000
Germany: 3,904,000
France: 3,461,000
I'll let you figure out which is the "largest."
bollagi 3 years ago
Again, so what. It only matters when you look at the % of GDP.
In fact, I think the United Kingdom exceeds us on that end, and so does France.
Advocate1234 3 years ago
very cool

Here is a shocking fact: The music in this video sucks 78% of all the worlds donkey balls.

EasyFinance 3 years ago
Probably 40% of America's GDP consists of local, state, and federal government "output". If we measure GDP by the output of "real" goods and services that contribute to a reasonable lifestyle, then the numbers change radically. The "output" of a few million government bureaucrats staring at a wall does nothing to enhance the lifestyle of a teacher, window washer, doctor, or waiter. Subtract the GDP "value" of the work of people who do nothing. What's left?

bullshit. Complete utter right wing, neocon bullshit

We R all slaves to the a few powerful warmongers, which is far from' freedom.'

yeah, exactly.

Jamecr1 4 years ago
The sources of the data are listed right in the video.
rburk41 4 years ago
Thanks, I didn't see them the first time. They are still too small for me to read. Can you list them? It looks like it says online references or something??? Maybe a link, and who puts out the data?

And if the "Banksters'" succeed , we'll be their slaves paying for our own slavery forever.

Don't you get it? Our country and economy prevent economic slavery. America invented "rags to riches," it is almost impossible to move up in class in many countries.

Nice Epitaph,
How about this one ... Debt as Money.
1tonykirk 4 years ago
'We look at GDP numbers to reassure ourselves that all is well, yet a growing number of Americans still do not enjoy the higher standard of living that monetary inflation brings to the privileged few. Those few have access to the newly created money first, before its value is diluted.
sruser92 4 years ago
For example: Before the breakdown of the Bretton Woods system, CEO income was about 30 times the average worker's pay. Today, it's closer to 500 times. It's hard to explain this simply by market forces and increases in productivity. One Wall Street firm last year gave out bonuses totaling $16.5 billion. There's little evidence that this represents free market capitalism.
sruser92 4 years ago
What we fail to understand is how much government entitlement spending contributes to the increase in the GDP. Rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by hurricanes, which simply gets us back to even, is considered part of GDP growth. Wall Street profits and salaries, pumped up by the Fed's increase in money, also contribute to GDP statistical growth. Just buying military weapons that contribute nothing to the well being of our citizens, sending money down a rat hole, contributes to GDP growth!
sruser92 4 years ago
This is a lame video. When comparing economies between nations, the standard measure is GDP per head. By that measure, the America, although the largest economy in the world, is neither the richest nor weathiest.
