An electronic grill igniter is the best thing I found to use as a trigger for a spud gun.

As for cutting the "ammo" just chamfer the end of the barrel. Kind of like the thing that you are using. Then, stuff the "ammo" down the barrel with a plunger. Just like a muzzle loading rifle. You'll get a much better seal and a lot more velocity.

I just noticed that in the slow motion shot of the launcher firing, you can see the explosion travel up the barrel in the parts that aren't painted. Very cool
