This was one of the last fun drafts to watch. Now it's just a whole bunch of hoopla and drafts take about 97 hours to complete.
Also, Berard could have been a generational defenseman, but he was mishandled by the Islanders, and only played for Toronto for a year and two months before Marion Hossa carelessly swung his stick. It wasn't intentional, but it was careless (yes, I know he was going for the puck, but it was still careless).
@camouellette Actually, Redden was great in Ottawa until his last year with the team.
Ottawa traded Berard for Redden because Berard refused to sign. They were forced to make the trade. It worked out great for Ottawa, and, unfortunately, Berard eventually had his career essentially ended playing against Ottawa. Karma? Too bad, he could have been amazing.
it's funny to look back on these drafts and see what could have been. what if ottawa had selected iginla? sigh. i still think it was an idiot move to not report to ottawa. wade redden had quite the career in ottawa.
@JimB667 same here. his late dad, montreal canadiens greqat john ferguson, probably told him to do the awful deals. now, the leafs have lost tuukka rask, brad boyes, lars eller, and co.
@avalanchesuperstar theres no point in listing them... its simple. underacheiving + just poor managmenet across the board. some warm and fuzzy moments in '93 and earl '00, followed and preceded by poor management.
@JimB667 hope jfj dosent screw up the sharks now... hes head scout. probably going to scout some lima beans. you dont screw up a team as a gm just because you hate them. thats right, jfj grew up as a habs fan.
ON that same day, Bryan Berard and Wade Redden swapped teams. Its a shame what happened to Bryan but Redden turned out okay. To those who was wondering what the third overall pick was...your favorite whippin boy, AKI BERG!
And if he wasn't traded I bet he would still have 2 good eyes. Just imagine how awesome he would be today if he had not had that accident! I'm so sad just thinking about it.
true, his stats were pretty damn good for a defenseman, and when the accident happened, his stats declined gradually im sure if that didnt happen, he probably be on a team that won a stanley cup

hearing the name john ferguson made me puke in my mouth a lil bit.

@JimB667 That's John Ferguson SENIOR. Not Junior. John Ferguson Sr was a brilliant team builder. The complete opposite of his son.

I hate the hockey Gods for what happened to Bryan.
Fucking shame, he would've been one of the best d-men to ever play in the NHL.
