It's hard to determine the hover characteristics of the Harrier. Its maximum hovering ceiling, as well as maximum hover time, all depend on a few circumstances, temperature, fuel load etc. Now, a Harrier does not need to be near the ground to hover, this misleads some people. The ground does play a part, but only due to the decrease in atmospheric density. Throwing in optimal conditions though, the Harrier can probably hover for about 10 minutes, and probably up to about 5000 feet or so.

@HalcyonSkies Nevermind that each plane itself is different on the scale of lemon to excellent, and issues of maintenance, hours on the equipment, general wear and tear come in to play with each aircraft. Unlike the air arm of the army and navy however, who knows what sort of risky modifications these mercs could have done to maximize performance.

Acording to the series Kim's Sea Harrier was heavily upgraded to the point of being described as "working twice as good as a RAF Harrier". Dont know if those upgrades apply the Pegasus engine but in episode 2 he is seen breaking the sound barrier along Shin's F-8E so surelly it has quite more thrust than a standard Sea Harrier. Its that possible? probably not but this is an anime after all..Sniper Rifles cant blow up a firetruck with a single hit

A .50 Sniper Rifle (like the Barret) loaded with a cordit round could very well blowup a firetruck in a single hit.

Hell, it can even pierce through the turret of a BMP-1 and kill the commander inside.

How can you do that like they showed in the series? You would need a tank and a HEAT round to produce the same effect.

Even if you hit the fuel tank on that truck they wouldn't just blow up like that, reason is that you need to heat up diesel pretty much to make it burn, let alone explode requires prolonged heat to get it to ignition temp and pressure, a pretty high pressure I might add.

Actually, if hit in the fuel tank, a sniper rifle with a large enough bullet can do that.

The Barret .50 caliber (12.7mm) sniper is standard issue for the anti-material role.

In other words, it's anti-vehicle rifle, but is just as effective against harden structures like pillboxes, as the Taliban and others have found out the hard way as of late.

To take out fighters and vehicles, that sniper was clearly using such a rifle, but was it's Soviet counterpart.

About 14.7mm, give or take.

Problem is, fuel tanks doesnt explode when hit by a rifle bullet.. unless its an incendiary/Explosive one.. and we saw this sniper shot people with the rifle and it didnt explode/flamed.. so its standard penetrating bullets.. so no..it cant make fuel tanks explode..

They need to redo some of the things they did.

They preformed some of their stunts involving munitions too much caution and got inaccurate data.

As for the sniper, he was using a bolt action, which can be reloaded at anytime from one round to a full clip, and from his movements, had alreadly preloaded his munitions for a set pattern.

A round to crash the two Skyhawks, two for the firetrucks, and a forth round for the controller.

That guy was good, he knew his limits and was deadly with them.

nope. The size of the bullet, tracer incendury or otherwise will not make a petrol tank explode!!!! an explosion is essentially something burning or expanding extremely quickly. Fuels such as petrolium or diesel require oxygen to burn hence why you can put out a fire by smothering it. it is in fact the air/fuel mixture which is explosive not the fuel itself. A tank with just fuel will not explode. it may burn; but it wont explode.

Actually, that's incorrect.

As stated the Barret is a 12.7mm (.50 cal.) sniper rifle that can take out a tank, but only if it is firing on the vulnerable rear.

It really depends on the round.

Like say, a semi-HE round, like the pistol from the first Halo.

They do have those in reality and the Barret does use that kind of munitions and there is reportedly WP rounds for rifles have also been expertimented with, though not for the Barret.

*sigh* read the context of the the word "Tank" in which I have used it... I am refering to "tank" as a container not the armoured vehicle. Large bullets incendury, HE or otherwise are not meant for the anti-tank (AV) role. They are used against lightly armoured or unarmoured targets. If a modern tank could be taken down by a 12.7x99mm bullet then we wouldn't be using tanks at all and everything would carry a 50. cal machine gun.

The military uses specialized bullets for the Barret.

Also, the Barret CANNOT penetrate a tank's armor on the front or sides, not even the turret.

The Barret came about as a means to take out tanks by hitting them in the ENGINE block!

Tanks are too well armored for anything else.

So yes it is possible, depending, like I said on the munitions involved.

And like I said, the Mythbusters were often overly cautious when working with effects from bullets.

I only really know of the Barret since I'm more into the regular infantry and not into sniper tech, as I have poor aim anyways to be concerned, though I do take time to study and understand the various weapons and their tech.

and if you can't produce enough thrust to fly normally, you can't produce enough to hover, so he would've gone down long before anyway
