  • BJ Penn is an example of how MMA has progressed in only 5 or so years. He is a great technical fighter but I think his strength and genetic potential left him out matched against some of the modern super athletes like GSP.

  • For all the people here thinking that their the same size as bj and can lift heavier, good for you!....but I guarantee after 25 minutes in an octagon you wouldn't be able to lift more than him and that's the difference between beach muscles and a conditioned athlete.

  • @meetchvb how is it bodybuilding ? mma requires pushing (chest/triceps) and pulling (biceps/back) and alot of punching (shoulders) and alot of twisting (core)

  • bj had horrible strength and conditioning coaches for this fight. arm isolation excersizes don't make you much stronger ur biceps and triceps dont need to be really strong in mma.

  • the only lifts i do anymore are power cleans, i just focus on cardio and it's been way more helpful for me with my jiu jitsu.

    do you know anything about weightlifting?

    if you want to be explosive you need to increase you maximal stength bottom line and unless ur not lifting three times you bodyweight it can only be good for you

    i'am a track runner and in our sport relative strength is the most important thing

    i do maximal strenght workout 1 a month and my weight didn't increase that much because it works essentially the nervous system

    it's when u lift for more than 3 reps that you muscle mass increase

  • @ABU2710 i didnt write anything about explosive power? i was responding to the coment about strength. if you read the post, youd see he was writing how strong he was, but in mma/boxing stamina trumps power/strength. what made you feel as though you had to read your resume tough guy?

  • For MMA you work out on preparing for a fight, the first four weeks you lift heavy low rep then in the middle weeks you go low weight high rep so the weight goes down then in the last 2 weeks you do piometrics and bodyweight exersizes im a mma fighter i no these things

  • For all the morons wondering why he is training like this it's because this is probably the first phase of his periodized strength cycle where general strength/hypertrophy is established to be converted into specific strength/power as he approaches the fight.

  • people also don't realize, that BJ does a lot of other shit, Doing BJJ alone builds great strength and endurance, then he does wight trainng, and then he does functional strength training. People just assume, the only way to work out is heavy weights with low repititions

  • Guys weight lifting is only part of his routine. These simple exercises are benefitial to fighters(push ups, crunches,etc)but should be supplemented with other things like plyos, sledgehammer, kettelbells etc. BJ does all that stuff as well. I look forward to the fight and I think his conditioning will be very good.
