Walter was born in Folkestone, Kent. His mother was English and his father was from Barbados the difference in colour obviously didn't bother them. He was also the first black football player to tour South America with Totenham Hotspur. Considering his up-bringing and the environment lived in he had every rightnot to go, but his story very similar to mary seacole who was rejected by british war office, but felt sense of duty for war effort ,Walter wanted to do his bit for country, shame that war office, wasn't prepared to give him his well earned medal, mary had a happy ending she supported by men who served in war & queen who gave her a pension, the only person, wasn't supportive was Florence nightingale(administrator)
