I have 1985 tecate and that will start first or 2nd kick but If it isn't run like a bike then it gets hard to start and sometimes it gets load up-friend also has the same problem with his kx500 rebuilt two years ago(unraced) they need to be oped up like you stole it-still a priceless machine!
my cr250 starts with no problem. everytime. but my cousins xr500..does not. you cant kick it over and over again you have to wait till it gets some compression going..then kick the shit out of it. looks like you might be having the same problem. id look into that. might save you some frustration. awesome bike btw post more vids

I have a 1990 honda fourtrax 250 ATV with a 1995 cr500 engine. its too hard to start cause the kick start lever hits the brake lever cause the quad had a forward kicking motor, and I only get what seems to be 2/3 of a full kick. any advice on how to make the bike easier to start??? I might make a custom lever (i have big feet and the lever is too small and my boot slips off anyway). considering a service honda digital ignition
I put the 2001 CR250 complete ignition system (from ESR) on mine and that made the biggest difference in starting it. Its definitely still a pain in the ass though.
@Jam3xxx There was a kit a few years ago I remember seen in atv action that you could buy out of a company in california that made a system that hinged the rear platic and seat so it would lift back and outta the way so you could kick that thing of with no probs

i have a 2001 cr500AF and yes it is a bitch to kick over when hot! lot of compression no auto decomp. but i can only knick my bike like 3 times with a shoe on and then it feels like my foot is fucking broke lol !

you tried changing the coil see if that makes it any easyer to start or put a colder plug in it?? i used bpr6's in my old cr 500, aposed to the bpr7's they use as standed. it made it much easyer to start when hot. iv also owned a tri-z 250 and they were both animals but mixing the 2 together ... god damm that thing must be scary lol

Dude I had always wandered what would've happened and how far they would've gone had they not been canned. I mean look at today's quad's there a 700 sport quads can you imagine what the 3-wheeler market would be like. I love what you have done keep the 3-wheels alive. I also own a 250R and it is the best 3-wheeler I have ever owned.
Probably the bottom engine cradle and getting the centerline of the sprocket shaft and the swingarm pivot area aligned exactly. I ended up having the change how I was going to do it originally after realising the alignment wasn't gonna be right. @Jam3xxx use a blaster kicker on the 500 kuckle.. and get a compression release in the head. Thats what I have on mine and it works great.

I ended up using a newer 2001 CR250 complete ignition system with a home made battery assist that greatly helped with the starting of it.
