I have both "A Quiet Normal Life, The Best Of Warren Zevon," and "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, The Anthology," which is a 2 CD collection and that song is on both of the albums. Love that song. I was just a little boy not excitable but little boy when it came out. Way to go Warren. May you rest in peace.
I loved when my teacher wrenched off my headphones as 1:30 came around the corner loud as hell. Her face was both shock and the very image of frustration and hate that I can possibly paint for you. XD
You know the 60's was the height of great rock music. But Mr. Zevon - he is the reason I don't criticize 70's rock. Some musicians came with a pocketful of original songs & creativity that stood toe to toe with the best of the 60's. Zevon is one of those boys. (OK if you count his work as Lyme & Cybelle -- he too is a 60's rocker. But his name was "made" as Warren Zevon -- and that was the 70's). This track is one of his classics. RIP & thanks Warren for leaving these songs behind for us.
funniest part of the song is the backup singers (linda ronstadt and jennifer warnes i believe) cooing "excitable boy" while warren's singing about rape and murder and mayhem.
“He took little Suzie to the Junior Prom, excitable boy, they all said. And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home, excitable boy, they all said.”
"and he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones...he's just an excitable boy" lololol love the happy big gay boat cruise saxaphones too, nice juxtaposition
“He took little Suzie to the Junior Prom, excitable boy, they all said. And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home, excitable boy, they all said.”............?
I love Warren Zevon. I remember the first time I heard it and I'm like oh this is catchy then the f-ed up lines come and my expression turns to O____o
@mimsy8i You know what brought me here? Actually liking this guy to begin with -- everyone stop flaunting the fact that all of the culture you consume comes at the recommendation of an internet celebrity -- it's embarrassing.
@neohip I'd hardly call it death metal. Waren was just one of a kind and wrote about issues that some others were writing about but did it in an origianl, funny way like all his songs.
@HaxorGlide It's supposed to sound nice and beautiful at the beginning, but becomes a bit sickening later. It's sickening because the music's so soft and the way he sings it is so innocent, even though he killed a girl got sent to a looney asylum and putting her bones in a cage. ^_^
College. Fall 1978. Along with all of the drugs, booze, sorority girls, came this album- a must play that we partied to for hours on end. From the first chords of "Johnny Strikes Up the Band" to the final sounds of "Tenderness on the Block" everything between is top shelf. Thank you Warren for the memories you'll give me for the remainder of my life. One of the best fucking albums ever.
Boy was a fuckin' handful as we grew up together.

oh god, this was one of my favorite songs as a kid fan of Warren Zevon.
I didn't have the inclination to hear the lyrics (i just found the music so damn catchy).
It's one of those songs that sounds positive at first, but then it turns out that it has a dark message to it. x-)

What i love about warren zevon is his ability to write music that didn't have an certain agenda. We need more music like that today.

@randykiller1000 that's kind of the point of the song. The whole time his behavior is dismissed as "excitable" up until he does something horrible.

@HaxorGlide It's about a guy with SERIOUS ISSUES, but everyone is just like "whatever. He is just 'excitable'."
Charlizardine 8 months ago 56
@HaxorGlide
It means a genius songwriter thought he could write a catchy tune about serious matters, and get it played on the radio.
No one ever listens to the words anyway.
It also means that Warren Zevon was Death Metal 20 years ahead of his time, but has never been given any credit.
neohip 8 months ago
@neohip some of the most popular songs on the radio people never really knew the lyrics. Most people have no idea "Lola" is really a man, for one.

In the filk community there's a subgenre of songs called "ose" -- songs dealing with death, destruction, doom, and despair. (Ose. Ose. MOROSE.)
This song is what filkers would call "cheery-ose".
MsCactusWren 8 months ago
@MsCactusWren I don't know much about filk, but I have also heard it listed as an example of "Lyrical Dissonance" in tvtropes.
