I'm born in 1990 and I'll have 1991-2001 in my heart forever.
I'm playing chrono trigger right now and I must say, I feel nostalgic playing it. Looking a the stand point as a game, its incredible. There's a society that's thousands of years older yet more advanced than today. Each battle has its own personal transition instead of the same screen. The techs are all very balanced. When I thought Marle and Lucca where useless I reach a level that makes the three an incredible team. Frog is actually the better swordsman, it's just all these little things.
@Reaper679 Thank you, but don't get me wrong I do have gripes with Chrono Trigger, even though I do call it the best RPG ever at that same time I call it just a margin overrated. People say no game could have you not play for an hour like zeal palace. 1. yes they could, all you did was explore it's not that hard 2. it was 20 minutes before I faced the golem 3. I didn't enjoy that part. The thing with Magus at the cape ticks me off if you choose frog like me. How could I say no? I didn't know.
@GuiltusGrahdus Regarding either the recruit of Magus or his final punishment...I knew the game creators were testing my emotional response at this point. Do you let emotion force you to destroy Magus, or look past it and recognize he serves a greater good in the party? I mean, yeah Magus was kind of rough but if an alien parasite had corrupted my mothers mind and caused the disappearance of both my civilization and sister I think I'd kind of turned out the same way. God I'm so high right now
@Reaper679 You have people constantly saying games are dead now that Chrono's been released. (possible spoilers) Really? A doll? I'm sorry but that ruined the moment. You have no idea how hard it was for me to talk to his mom. My last gripe, CT didn't improve on the change history bit it just did it to death. All it did was have people change from their ancestor. None were as good as OoT song of storms thing in the windmill. Sorry but I didn't have this as a child.
When it comes to mixing all genres together, first-person shooter, side-scroll, RPG, adventure, horror, fighting this has got to be one of the greatest games ever made.
So nostalgic ... Every time I listen to Chrono Trigger music, I miss my childhood when everything was easy, fun and amazing. I tried to finish the game some time ago, but I found that it was not as exciting as it was when I was a child.
At ten years old, I could not say that this game would remain etched in my memory and make me regret my childhood at this point. Long life to this game. Long life to Square Enix. They gave us epic games that gives us wonderful memories and I thank them for that.
@schamp92 I find myself partially replaying it every couple of years. It's still amazing but of course it's not going to be as exciting because it's no longer new to you. You know the twists and turns and devices. The first time it unravels and you don't know the things that are going to happen around the next corner and they constantly take you by surprise while being tightly connected and pulled off expertly.
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which is electronic music inspired by great games such as Chrono Trigger. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
I think it's unfair to compare Chrono Trigger to Bethesda games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls. They're very different, but both of them are very great games in their own right. It's apples and oranges. Fallout is great for the exploration, possibilities, and realism, while Chrono Trigger is great for the music, strategy, time traveling, classic gameplay, and memorable characters. It's just unfair to compare such different games.
Heh Queen Zeal goes insane thinking she can control the power of Lavos then you show up and kick her ass, destroy the Black Omen and give her the finger.
@Xxk0suxX ahh ya, what a time to be a kid, and actually I think its more like the golden age of RPGS in that time period, Rpgs started to get less and less quality after SNES.... The rpgs on the consoles after the original playstation REALLY were crap and quality was non-existant anymore.... shame that a 16 bit console can have the best rpg games yet a 1 Terabite console cant seem to compete with the same quality of gameplay as a 16 bit console, thus the saying size doesnt matter!
omg I am so happy I got this game when It wasn't really to expensive. I checked it out recently at a gamestop by my house. and it was like 70 bucks. Very happy that I've had my game since the week it came out ^__^
@occultologist While it is true that it gets boring and annoying hearing the same thing over and over, the music in Chrono Trigger never gets that bad. Anyone who thinks differently shall be Robo Tackled.
another factor that may have forced snes composers to up the ante, was, time constraints. songs had to be short, due to memory limitations, therefore the music had to be really good, otherwise listening to it again and again would get really incredibly boring and iritating.
take the music from star wars (456) and compare it with most of the music you hear from movies. can you hear the difference? that's the same difference between a chrono trigger song and a god of war song. i know i'm right.
snes music is classic, timeless, the way beethoven or tchaikovsky is timeless, those songs demand our intention, they perfectly capture and express a fundamental feeling. if music can be compared with language (afterall, music is a form of communication, it speaks directly to our heart), then snes and ps1 music is more articulate, it has better rythm, superior melody. it's the difference between michael jackson's dancing and just any run of the mill dancer.
yeah, you can say i'm biased or whatever, that it's just because i grew up with nes (of course nes is poor in terms of sound quality, but not in terms of art/music quality), snes and ps1, but as far as i can tell/be objective, as sound quality increased, art/music quality decreased. perhaps those old school programers were forced to focus on other things, since the graphics and sound were so poor, like a man compensates for his blindness by his other senses being hightened.
The story was outstanding but the music is what really made this title so enthralling. Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite gaming experiences. A must play for anyone remotely interested in 16-bit RPG's. Great game all-around.
This song...it always made me feel like something horrible was waiting in the very next room. And most of the time, I was right. Seriously, with all the Golems and evil queens and mindblowing cutscenes, I lost several years off my life just walking around.
i miss this game so much. I thought about getting an emulated version or somethin (I no longer have a SNES :( ) but I probably wouldn't get anything done after that lol
FFVII might be the most influenctial RPG I've played, but playing Chrono Trigger over a decade after release on the DS, it was the best RPG ever made.
I agree with you, and I add that FFVI is the best FF ever; FFVII is overrated. I consider Chrono Trigger, FFVI and Super Mario RPG the top 3 of RPG on SNES... and on history...
@chadinterrupted -- sorry to butt in, but there is no getting around to it... DO IT NAOH!!!!!!!!!!!! ASAP!!!!
Epic game. You must attain all endings. You must defeat Lavos. Save the world, chadinterrupted.... only you can prevent forest fires! gogogogogogogogogogogo! =D
Something weird on the cover...lol marle is the one that learns ice not fire or whatever that is. Just pointing it out. Awesome cover and game nonetheless
Best version of this game is on Ds, I have rapped this game on every system it was released for and the Nintendo Ds version was my favourite... All the extra's were sweet plus it was cool to see the version of lavos if consumed Schala.
blasphemi, how can you said that. This game story line was rape to fit in with the not so awsome senseless chrono cross. The sness ver is the best ever. Oh poor great lucca how can she be killed by some stupid cat? HOw the heroes who kiiled lavos were murderer by a stupid father with psicollogical problems. I felt like the efforts i put in the chrono trigger where in vain. i power up those character in a way i coulf finish the game right from the beggining. Scahala was never pregnant.
I don't agre with you. I know people who would buy the DS version even if had the SNES one due to the multiplayer mode, the extra dungeons, and... because they wanted a remake, good or not so good.
Ok damit after watching this my minds telling me to go download chrono trigger and play it again on a snes emulator. I FUCKING LOVE THIS GAME EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@KCRC2009 no, she's literally shooting it out. in fact, when the game was in production, lucca was supposed to be ice, while marle was supposed to fire.
I'm thinking about playing this game emulated (I've never played it before) during my winter vacation. Is it worth it considering that there are games like FF13 and Fallout 3 out there?
@kimcheolho There could be a thousand Fallouts out there. Chrono Trigger would still be worth playing. It will always be, even a hundred years from now.
@Talvegue amen brother. chrono trigger is just the oatmeal to your breakfast. nothing matches what 4 eggs and bacon can do for a man for breakfast. this is chrono trigger son.
@kimcheolho Listen to me, I'll only say this once, when I first played Chrono Trigger I was blown away, it amazed me in every way possible. There was nothing like it, it was ahead of its time. I first played the game in 2001 for the first time and could not stop playing it. Thats how good it was.
Chrono Trigger makes FF13 look like a poor excuse of a RPG. As for Fallout 3, IMO since I've played both games, I'd rather play Chrono Trigger. Its not about the graphics, its the story and music.
@kimcheolho I only played the SNES version so I dont know, they even re-released it on the Nintendo DS. But the SNES version as far as I can tell is flawless, its the original and I think they made slight changes to the other re-releases of it.
this song is so evil and debauched, yet so seductive, you just have to give into temptation, bow down and worship it. who could resist all that power. the mammon machine. they worship it and queen zeal like a crazy cult.
@XavierTheTitan: Cross was awesome, what are talking about? Sure it doesn't seem to be connected to Trigger at first but in the end, everything gets resolved. My only gripe with Cross is that they could have a bit more connections to Trigger, but hey, you still see Belethsar in Cross, you can still fight Ozzie, Flea and Slash and save Schala once and for to boot in Cross.
about the boxart, i don't think marle is using fire at all. it looks like crono is swinging his sword and that's the fire trailing behind it. frog and marle are just in a fighting stance.
No matter how shaded, shiny, realistic and grim games get, Chrono Trigger will always be one of the very best. Playing through this game never gets old. It's just one of those things that gets absolutely EVERYTHING right.
@outsideredge Spot on. 15 years later, and after playing great looking games, with orchestral, or studio quality music, I can still go back to this, and enjoy it, like it just came out. It's just friggin' superbly paced, balanced, great story, with great characters. Just awesome.
for me, videogames peaked in the mid to late 90's. thumbs up if you feel the same way. videogames were an artform back then. it's these songs that will live on in my head till i die. i can't even remember any songs from the ps2 era of gaming. by and large, contremporary videogame music is just background music, but songs from the snes era you can actually listen to without even playing the game. modern videogame music has no sense of melody. it's incapable of evoking any deep sentiment.
@occultologist I want to agree with you, but Final fantasy's and other rpgs such as musashi samurai legend have a very memorable ost that could just be listened to w/o even playing the game.
@occultologist i agree strongly, dude,do you remember the killer instinct theme? or the aquatic ambience theme from donkey kong country? well, the 90's era of game music had a true soul
@budeldias yes, i remember my friend, those songs are burned into my memory and into my soul, forever. i wish i could say the same for ps2 music, with the possible exception of a couple of games, shadow of colossus and hitman blood money.
@Lhivorde i just listened to that song, it was mediocre at best. i never played ff10, admittedly, but i played 12, and once again, the music was descent, but it was backdrop music, it didn't stand out on it's own, it was instantly forgettable, bland, dull. i'll give you another example. compare soul blade music to soul calibur music. soul blade, or ff7 to ff10 or 12.. no comparison, really.
@Fiskepudding127 admittedly, i haven't played any wii or gamecube, but i have played a lot of ps2 and some ps3, and i'm telling you, it's not the same in my opinion. i can't really speak for x box, wii or gamecube. i'll check out twilight princess and tell you what i think.
@occultologist There are also two logical reasons for how vg music has changed. The first is that when they were working with 8-bit technology, the melodies and harmonies HAD to be very good for it to sound any good at all. Same with the 16 and 64 bit machines. Secondly, in the ps2 era or the "6th generation" there was a change in what grade the music was interactive. Now composers make 8 or 12 bare compositions that change algorithmically according to the intensity of the gameplay.
@occultologist Thus one must be careful to put to much melody into it cus you never know it it might come out! Many vg composers have said that they are unhappy with this development as they now must sacrifice melody for some atonal percussion loops. Though the games that still use the classic stage by stage system still have wonderful music. Like the new Donkey Kong country. You still have a point though, as they don't need to have such interesting melodies any more cus of the sound quality.
@Latetothepartyreview god of war was descent, but can you honestly remember any of the music? no, i bet you can't, i sure can't, and i have an superb memory for music (oddly enough, i only have an average memory for everything else).
gow was forgettable, the melodies weren't catchy, they had no personality, character. accentuation, you wouldn't listen to the music outside of the game, it was background music.
@occultologist To be honest, I remember one particular song from it. The "Rage Unleashed" song. Also, there's a good argument to be had for songs on the N64 and some of the newer games on the PS2 had some awesome songs. Like Kingdom Hearts and the Metal Gear Solid games had some solid work. I can't argue with the fact that this some of the best music ever made.
@occultologist Luckily there are still a few relatively new games that hold those high standards - a few examples are Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Ico and The Longest Journey.
Those titles are definitely art, and should set an example for other games as well.
@occultologist Shadow of Colossus, Zelda, Mirror's Edge, and Touhou while not comparable to Chrono Trigger... At least have music that I don't immediately mute.
@occultologist I agree with your sentiment, but that's incredibly shortsighted and almost insulting in a way as there have been a multitude of finely crafted games since the 90's.
there is no game better than this. i love it. im 16. i only know of this game because of my bro, whos 24. i am so happy he had good taste in video games.
I love the begining to this song. Its hard to say which RPG is my favorite but Earthbound and Final Fantasy 7 and Chrono Trigger are my top three. TES Oblivion is pretty badass too...as far as music tho...man its awfully close between CT and FF7...I just couldn't tell ya!
Well, if you want to talk about the cover. At no point in the game is Chrono ever wearing a cape, and marle wearing a pink overcoat. Besides that This monster is fought in the year 1000AD in the cave north of melchior's house., not in a snowy place, (probably 12,000 BC) and frog can't be in your team yet because you don't have the masamune. and the fire can't be coming from Chrono's sword because Chrono uses Lightning magic, not fire.
@notoncemoreagain yah i know! this cover makes so little sense to me... It seems like the cover art was done before they even started working on the game.
@tnoble711 it's an odd coloring hickup. on other box covers i've seen it with the correct color. maybe it was a scan from an old box with the colors gone off a bit? marle shoots a lightning bolt at the sword, not a fireball (and yes, lucca is the fire girl)
i will forever love this game because not only was the gameplay and story line amazing (i mean each charicter was from a different walk of life) the music filled you to the brim with whatever emotion needed to be conveyed at that point in time, like when you meet Glenn you know he is a hero when the games starts you just get a feeling of hope and joy like a new day untainted. This game should be immortalized and made for every system with the only change being the graphics (if any that is)
sounds like rick roll

Oh poor great lucca how can she be killed by some stupid cat? HOw the heroes who kiiled lavos were murderer by a stupid father with psicollogical problems. I felt like the efforts i put in the chrono trigger where in vain. i power up those character in a way i coulf finish the game right from the beggining. Scahala was never pregnant.

I don't agre with you. I know people who would buy the DS version even if had the SNES one due to the multiplayer mode, the extra dungeons, and... because they wanted a remake, good or not so good.

@kimcheolho There could be a thousand Fallouts out there. Chrono Trigger would still be worth playing. It will always be, even a hundred years from now.

@Dragonballvidmaster you can try chrono cross for the ps1 but I hearing that is is not the best
XavierTheTitan 1 year ago
@XavierTheTitan: Cross was awesome, what are talking about? Sure it doesn't seem to be connected to Trigger at first but in the end, everything gets resolved. My only gripe with Cross is that they could have a bit more connections to Trigger, but hey, you still see Belethsar in Cross, you can still fight Ozzie, Flea and Slash and save Schala once and for to boot in Cross.

nastynate3163 1 year ago 2
about the boxart, i don't think marle is using fire at all. it looks like crono is swinging his sword and that's the fire trailing behind it. frog and marle are just in a fighting stance.

No matter how shaded, shiny, realistic and grim games get, Chrono Trigger will always be one of the very best. Playing through this game never gets old. It's just one of those things that gets absolutely EVERYTHING right.
outsideredge 1 year ago

Lhivorde 7 months ago
@Lhivorde i just listened to that song, it was mediocre at best. i never played ff10, admittedly, but i played 12, and once again, the music was descent, but it was backdrop music, it didn't stand out on it's own, it was instantly forgettable, bland, dull. i'll give you another example. compare soul blade music to soul calibur music. soul blade, or ff7 to ff10 or 12.. no comparison, really.

occultologist 7 months ago
@occultologist There are also two logical reasons for how vg music has changed. The first is that when they were working with 8-bit technology, the melodies and harmonies HAD to be very good for it to sound any good at all. Same with the 16 and 64 bit machines. Secondly, in the ps2 era or the "6th generation" there was a change in what grade the music was interactive. Now composers make 8 or 12 bare compositions that change algorithmically according to the intensity of the gameplay.
Fiskepudding127 7 months ago
@occultologist Thus one must be careful to put to much melody into it cus you never know it it might come out! Many vg composers have said that they are unhappy with this development as they now must sacrifice melody for some atonal percussion loops. Though the games that still use the classic stage by stage system still have wonderful music. Like the new Donkey Kong country. You still have a point though, as they don't need to have such interesting melodies any more cus of the sound quality.

Latetothepartyreview 7 months ago in playlist Chrono Trigger Music
@Latetothepartyreview god of war was descent, but can you honestly remember any of the music? no, i bet you can't, i sure can't, and i have an superb memory for music (oddly enough, i only have an average memory for everything else).
gow was forgettable, the melodies weren't catchy, they had no personality, character. accentuation, you wouldn't listen to the music outside of the game, it was background music.
occultologist 7 months ago
@occultologist To be honest, I remember one particular song from it. The "Rage Unleashed" song. Also, there's a good argument to be had for songs on the N64 and some of the newer games on the PS2 had some awesome songs. Like Kingdom Hearts and the Metal Gear Solid games had some solid work. I can't argue with the fact that this some of the best music ever made.
Latetothepartyreview 7 months ago
@occultologist Luckily there are still a few relatively new games that hold those high standards - a few examples are Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Ico and The Longest Journey.
Those titles are definitely art, and should set an example for other games as well.

321findme 1 year ago
it's probably lightning, not fire. but the color is a bit off. i you look at the other music videos in this playlist it looks more like lightning

@321findme And marle doesn't use fire.. she has a double-tech of puttnig ice on his sword.

@notoncemoreagain yah i know! this cover makes so little sense to me... It seems like the cover art was done before they even started working on the game.
321findme 1 year ago
@321findme NO! I remember..the fire came from Marle lol they made a mistake ..it was supposed to be lucca!
tnoble711 1 year ago
@tnoble711 it's an odd coloring hickup. on other box covers i've seen it with the correct color. maybe it was a scan from an old box with the colors gone off a bit? marle shoots a lightning bolt at the sword, not a fireball (and yes, lucca is the fire girl)
IsilionNELE 1 year ago
Speaking of the cover...Marle doesn't shoot fire she shoots ice :P

i will forever love this game because not only was the gameplay and story line amazing (i mean each charicter was from a different walk of life) the music filled you to the brim with whatever emotion needed to be conveyed at that point in time, like when you meet Glenn you know he is a hero when the games starts you just get a feeling of hope and joy like a new day untainted. This game should be immortalized and made for every system with the only change being the graphics (if any that is)
