I've been waiting a long time for someone who can do the following:
1. Lay down rock, rock blues and blues tunes that will have you picking your jaw up off the floor. 2. Absolutely rip apart the fretboard by applying multilple techniques and blazing chops (this guy is NOT a one trick pony) from song to song and even within a song. 3. Have a voice that supports his guitar work AND can sing within the framework of multiple styles (rock, blues, rock blues etc..). JOE BONAMASSA is the REAL DEAL!!!
I can't stop smiling when this guy is interviewed. He's always gonna show something on the guitar to explain what he just said, but he's so in love with the thing that he can't stop playing. Always ends up playing forever. What a passion. Such a perfect technic it's ridicilous. Combined with soul, 30 years of guitarplaying (at the age of 34...) and a love for music that's just insane.. He will be mentioned along with Hendrix, Page, Clapton and SRV in no time.. And what a great guy to!
Saw him a couple of weeks ago. The man's a star and just loves playing. There's always fools who'll find something wrong with that. Not sure why. Would it help if he trashed a few hotel rooms and covered himself in tattoos? Go see him if you get the chance. Amazing.
@chefo93 Start simple. Learn the notes and pentatonic scales (standard stuff for blues)....look on youtube for pentatonic lessons. There are only a few basic shapes and positions. Sounds like you need to be shown.
Listen to BB King, Albert King, EARLY Clapton (Bonamassa is pretty much a Claptonite). Once you can associate the positions with the sounds and phrases , you'll see that it's not really that hard. That is, until you get to refining with bends, vibrato and sincere phrasing.
@bobgure I know pentatonic scales, I just don't have enough skills, I am not able to make solos like that...mine are always boring and the same...there is nothing interesting in them....that's why I asked how to learn to make such solos and such riffs...to make my playing that interesting. Thank you for the answer...I listen to BB King, but not that much...
@chefo93 Everyone, everyone learns by copying, QUOTING other players. What helped my playing and confidence was to take a not too difficult guitar solo from a record and learn it piece by piece, phrase by phrase, lick by lick. Blues playing at it's technical core is learning the stock phrases, the 'cliches' , if you will and gradually making them your own. Every blues player essentially plays the same licks; it's a limited vocabulary. Originality will come . Learn others' solos first. :-)
@chefo93 Bonamassa is 'quoting' stock Clapton, Freddie King, BB and Albert licks all over the place. Stevie Ray cut his teeth on quoting Albert King. It's like learning a language.....it's difficult to do on my own. I need people to show me stuff that I never could have figured out on my own. Try not to worry about fluidity and originality. It's already inside of you, but needs to find context, which memorizing solos will help condition. Learn a new phrase and make it yours thru reps.

Yes, it lets him screw the stoptail all the way down (increasing sustain a bit) and and also thereby decreasing the tension in the strings. It makes the 11 gauge strings he plays with have the tension of 10s (by his own admission).
