  • what I find quite interesting is that in this territory they are fighting while at the same time, in neighbouring territories they prefer to live "harmoniously"

  • Could you describe the setup for those that may appreciate replicating this. Mutant strain if any? Food? Etc...

  • fruit fly used TACKLE

    nothing happens

    fruit fly used KICK

    nothing happens

    fruit fly used GRAB

    nothing happens

how could they harm each other that way?

  • WOW in 3:30 KARATE KICK hahaha, nice video .interesting.

  • inject a fruit fly with phenylalanine..and video that

  • UFC!

    ultimate fly championship

  • Who won??? You should take bets. Give one a line of cocaine right before

  • "its mine"

    "no its mine!!"

seriously cant they learn to share :\

    LOL

  • awesome wrestling there. I dont think they can hurt each other.

  • Been working with Drosophila for a year now... never knew they could get aggressive!

  • Kick his ass, seabass!

  • "Go on Dave, take it to him"

  • pwned

  • thank god for van der waals forces

  • the last three comments, read from down to up please

  • I have observed for 30 minutes but all they want to do is find a way out of the chamber. i know theres also the factor of age where 3-7 day old flies only fight, but can u help to elicit aggressiveness in these flies? i need to be able to quick because i need to take trials soon. thank you.

  • i put 8 single male flies in 8 separate and EMPTY vials without food so that they would starve for a while as motivation to fight. After about 7 hours of no food, i unleash two random ones onto a similar fighting arena as the experiment used with a food cup with the same cornmeal medium.

  • ive been following this expirement but i need help. I got vials of wild-type drosophila melanogaster from Carolina reared on cornmeal medium. I tried to get this type of aggression for my experiment where im adding an ssri as a variable to see if it affects the aggressiveness of these flies, but they havent been very aggressive at all.

  • they`re just playing the love game!!!

  • This was probably the most amusing fly battle I ever saw. It's interesting that the fly just get pushed off rather than once they reach the edge, they fly away and come back.

  • looks like peanut butter in a bottle cap is totally worth all that effort. hey, he's only got a day or two to live! FLY FIGHT!!!

  • It looks like they're doing judo with 4 arms.

  • wouldve been a funny if a giant thumb came down and squished both at the end

  • Interesting! It does look territorial, as they keep pushing each other to the edge of the "wrestling ring," or perhaps they dated the same female. :-)

  • awsome. in slowmotion we see how aggresive drosophila can be. they actually flatten eachother. these flies seem to be fighting like females (headbutting/pusshyness) whats going on?

  • all i wanna know is, WHO WON?!?!?!

  • ohne arme keine kekse!

  • ajmccart, i think Dr. Dierick's work is really interesting and I would liek to use his work in an experiment maybe...ajmccart can u suggest some readings and articles that can help me develop a strong knowledge base for learnign about aggressiveness in fruit flies please??

  • Thanks for your interest!

I'd suggest going to pubmed . com, searching "Dierick HA" and looking up Dr. Dierick's most recent papers. He references all of the papers he considers important for his work. I assume you have access to journal articles, if not let me know.

  • intense battle.

  • I noticed they don't care if a female goes on the food territory. =O

  • What are they fighting for? Or did one spill the other's sugar solution

  • They fight for the territory. Perhaps the territory is important because this is their food, as well as where females lay eggs . . .

  • Hi! interesting behairvour .... I am getting my master's degree in Biochemistry in New york.... where is your lab?

  • Thanks for your interest! We are at The Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, CA. If you want to see more videos, look up "Dierick HA" in pubmed. . .the paper is published in Nature Genetics under the title "Molecular analysis of flies selected for aggressive behavior."

  • lol @ JWWells

    Ralph is the man.

  • How appropriate. The Greenspan Lab releases a video of... fly pushing.

  • wonderful! why these flies didn't fly away?

    And,which lab u r in?Martin Heisenberg's?

  • They can fly away, but they don't want to; they want to win! I'm in the Greenspan lab.
