And he said that he didn't even know who the person was. He said he was hurt because.....

And to confirm my explanation, if you watch the youtube video of the 1986 AMAs, you can see the anguish and curiosity in him when she calls him on stage to receive his award and she and Lionel Richie are on stage embracing each other, and Michael looks them up and down as to wonder is it him.
