So beautiful. How large is the reference photo that you used for this art? (I'm making an assumption that you used a reference.) Also, did you use more than one reference, or more than one --like one for the background, and one for the wolf image? Lastly, did you take the photographs yourself? (I read that you work with wolves.) This is truly inspiring. Thank you for posting.
love this...have you tried odorless mineral spirits...I have very good luck with blending..it's one thing I am actually very good at..but am looking to find different techniques for rendering water and liquid or reflective surfaces...
you, sir, are a hero... @AnnihilatingAngel, i'm the same- love Prismacolor, but CANNOT lay down colors smoothly!! i tried the blender, oils, rubbing alcohol...still flecks of white! so i tried the white underneath and i was more satisfied than i have been all week of experimenting!
*whew* i feel like a million pounds were lifted off of me!!
Interesting! I use Prismacolors, but they drive me nuts, since no matter how much I use the colorless blender, I can STILL see the paper. Never thought to lay down white before, since the paper itself is of course white.
Why does it work? Because the white layer fills the tooth?
Absolutely Beautiful , love the detail on the log... the tree well all of it... and enjoyed your website... I use two hands and can not get as nice a picture as you!!! ...LOL and you are making a demo with one hand and drawing with the other...lol just had me giggling.. Your an excellent artist...thanks for sharing
wow i couldnt believe that the wolf was made by color pencils, that looks just like a photo. i loved it
im 1000000% subscribed
btw could u let me know which pencil is the best?? crayola pencils or prisma?? what's the difference between them?? cuz i have crayola's one cuz i think that prisma's are more expensive. could i get the same result with my crayolas pencils??
@blueguitar77 I have the full set of Prismacolors, and I read about the differences in quality from Crayola to Prismacolor. Beginning artists don't notice much of a difference. Intermediate to advanced artists all have rave reviews when discussing their change from Crayola to Prismacolor, saying it's just...better quality. Better for blending, more consistent in firmness of graphite, great for detail.
Yes I have used the colorless blender. I don't like using them because they dull the color. I have used rubber cement thinner not turpintine to make the colors look like I used a water color wash, however I have only used this method once and wasn't happy with the results. As far as the paper I use it is a 3 ply Strathmore Bristol Board with a Plate finish. I have tried using a Velum finish but I found it has way to much "tooth" to it a therefore really grinds down the pencils to fast.
ahh, in that case have you tried using sansador or mineral spirits along with a blending stump or torilons? ive seen videos of people doing it with prismacolor pencils and have gotten great results, also with baby oil, so that you can get a smudging effect and i belive the same effect with your technique. also why werent you happy with your results, with the thinner?
also how does the colorless blender dull the color? does it lift it or make the under layers muddy?
I don't do "Speedpainting". I understand people do. I think it's kind of a gimmick. My drawings take me 2 to 4 months sometimes longer. Completed my drawings are about 3 feet by 4 feet.
2-4 months? Wow. I admire your dedication, it simply amazing. There aren't very many artist that I know, professional or amateur that spend longer than 16 hours per drawing. Then again, I don't know many artists that have a lot of time or have a lot of detail in their art. The only artist I know personally has, at the most, spent a week for one drawing.
Simply amazing. Thank you for uploading this video on how you blend color pencils. (I really need it at the moment.)
Amazing definition, tone and blending skills. You truly are une artiste! I'm glad you pursue your passion , not alot of people have the determination to do it nowadays. =)
I use Prismacolor color pencils because they do blend rather well. Prismacolor also has this colorless blender (have you heard of them?) Would you recommend those as well? I've also heard of the technique you speak of (a layer of white first), and that does seem to work too. I was just curious as to what you thought of colorless blenders.
I think if I were a pencil I would hate to be called a colorless blender. Okay, bad joke. I don't use them. I think they tend to dull the colors. I prefer to use a complimentary color to blend with.
I am going to try this technique immediately-however, what about conte white, pastels, artstix, etc. Any success with other mediums as white other than pencil white?
Hi there, what do you do if you have a pencil based sketch and using white as a base may end up blending with your sketch? Right now, I have a sketch and trying to figure out what kind of medium I'd like to color it with. I'm leaning more towards colored pencils since I'm more familiar with them, but I'm a little scared that I'll mess it up and have to start over again once I start coloring. Any suggestions for working around my sketch?
Using white as a base is not something that is widely accepted as a good way to blend colors. I happen to like it though. You can use any color for a base and I do other colors as a base. It gives you some great effects. Try it you'll see.

You must go through so many colored pencils fast. I imagine you are frequently buying Prismacolor pencils, and that must get pricey.

have you used a colorless blender? how are they at blending colors together? or have you used turpintine ever to blend them?
what kind of paper do you use?

I havre tried them. Don't care much for them. You can't really use other mediums with Prisma Color because they are a wax and oil base medium.

Hi, could you possibly show how to create a shiny silk like fabric with coloured pencils? Thanks :)! Great videos, btw.

I will see what I can do about that. It might take a while! This is my busy season for my shows.

I like that white base technique. Very good. Thank you also for sharing the color names to help us get more realistic drawings.
