this reminded me of themovie "the gathering" that i saw or actually skimmed through (becuz i luv christina ricci)&it was about (may contain spoilers...ha ive always wanted 2 say that) the ppl that gathered around when christ was crucified (yeah..it went there >>)& it was more focused on the ppl that come just to watch, like the ppl that used to bring knitting supplies&food to hangings like it was a source of entertainment or something to see sum1 die. Random but thats what it reminded me of. ^_^
You could have said, "Excuse me, but I was here first."
However, as you said, we are two-faced, even with language... if you need to tell someone that they are in the wrong, the social norm is to ask them to excuse you, to absolve you when there's v little chance that they will do so, because you're just about to criticise them. Etiquitte makes no sense! 'Tis compassion we need. If manners were based on this rather than on saving face, life w be nicer!
life would be nicer if we were all compassionate instead of obsessed with etiquette and all that rubbish! If I had questioned a posh person in front of everyone at the shop the whole village would have exploded with outrage and gossip!
Such petty minds. I live in a hamlet, where there's less pettiness, but when those people get together I imagine there's lots of uncalled for bitching. The local town is even worse! I think it comes from years of these people living next to each other - it's like a whole little world to them; blinkers even - everything that happens here is really important to them, even if it's incredibly mundane. I am so glad I didn't grow up where I live. Insularity is a corrosive, unhealthy thing. :(
