Johns was a fucking badass, they should've just kept him as a sort of carry-on antagonist, one that just goes through multiple movies. Toombs is nothing compared to Johns and Toombs needs a whole team to fail at beating Riddick while Johns went in by himself.

I haven't seen this movie, only Chronicles of Riddick, and there is something that I just don't get. Wasn't Riddick supposed to be far superior a normal human, almost supernatural? isn't the other guy just a soldier of some kind? In the sequel, the only one who can match Riddick is the Lord Marshall and perhaps Vaako...

They changed a few things between PB and CoR. The best part of PB is the social dynamic between Johns, Riddick, and Carolyn (blonde chick). She spends the entire movie struggling to figure out who's the 'good guy, when neither of them is, while monsters try to kill everybody. It's a different type of movie, than the sequel.

Also, to answer your question directly:

In Pitch Black, Riddick seems to be pretty much a normal human...except for the weird eyes, what seems like super-hearing, and the fact he's awake during cryosleep.

The other dude is a skilled bounty hunter, who's been specifically hunting Riddick for a while.

That dynamic is ultimately the only redeeming quality that PB has.  It was expertly played out by the cast but the rest of the movie wasn't as interesting as CoR.
