World At War is my favorite CoD game and the most authentic depiction of WW2 in a video game IMO but this one started it all so I have respect for that. Haven't played this in at least 5 or 6 years but I remember having a blast with it. 2003 feels so long ago now haha.

CoD 1 is the only Call of Duty worth playing, in my oppinion. Much closer to what the developpers originaly intended to do when they made Medal of Honor on the PSX. Its better paced and more open-ended than any CoD game (on the other end, what game ISN'T better paced and more open-ended than any CoD game)... *serious face*

Obviously all of the WW2 ones are based on historical events. Black Ops uses real Cold War events as its backdrop (Bay of Pigs invasion, Kennedy assassination, the Tet Offensive, the battle of Hue City, etc), but uses the fact that most of these ops were classified to create their own fictional narrative. Modern Warfare is completely fictional, but based of course on modern warfare technology and tactics. I don't see Russian tanks patrolling the White House in real life
