i baught 1 betta and put it in a big ass 10 gallon tank lol. quite a good idea cuz if i get a barb it could hide in caves cuz the tank is big enough for hiding places
@LibisFish One gallon for a betta? Yeah, maybe if you are only expecting it to live for a couple years. 5.5 gallons is the absolute minimum tank size you can successfully keep fish in without any special care.
@drgnfrc13 One of my bettas lived six years in a gallon pickle gar. The rest lived 4-5 years in gallon pickle jars. Bettas are not like other fish. They have a labrynth organ that allows them to breathe some air from the surface. This is what allows them to live in almost still waters like the rice paddies that they call home in Asia. This is also what allows them to live in a gallon without trouble--if you change the water once a week. Now, with goldfish etc I agree with you.
@LibisFish You're foolish enough to believe that just because a fish survives a long time it is healthy? smh. FYI, there are people who say the same about goldfish in 10 gallon aquariums (and I'm talking common/comet goldfish that get to 12"+).
@drgnfrc13 Which is why our ryukin (will grow to be far smaller than a comet) has 20 gal to himself. I never had problems with fin rot or other filth-related diseases. Several of my Wal-Mart bettas that I felt sorry for and brought home were sick when I got them and grew healthier with time--which suggests good husbandry. By the way, the majority of show betta breeders keep them in similar conditions to what I kept my fish in. A few also have large systems of "cells" for the fish.
@LibisFish Wow, where to begin... First of all; again, just because they survive does not mean they are in good conditions. Bettas are hardy, I agree, but that doesn't mean they should be kept in the worst conditions you can possibly give them without immediately killing them or encouraging disease. Regarding the show breeders, it is common for breeders to keep their fish in the absolute minimum conditions, this doesn't surprise me (many cichlid breeders do the same).
@drgnfrc13 Yeah, they didn't just survive, they got better. Their rotted fins (being from Wal-Mart) grew back and gained color, they became more enthusiastic in their behavior, etc.
Not to mention that these Wal-Mart fish had a much better chance at life in my humble pickle jars than they would have with most of the people bringing them home. At the time the "throw them in a jar with a plant and don't feed them" fad was big. Everywhere I looked people had starving fish. I did the best I could with what I had (guess what, I'm poor as dirt) and the fish were happy.
@LibisFish And as for the ryukin, a 20 gallon isn't much of an improvement, considering the metabolism of goldfish. I would never keep even the short bodied varieties in anything less than a 40 gallon breeder; 55 gallons for the more elongated breeds (orandas, comets, commons, certain fantails, etc.).
@drgnfrc13 You know what bud? Our fish are doing fine. And we aren't rich like you seem to be. So deal with it. They get the very best that we have, and much better than most people would do for them. You are an elitist. I'm not replying to you further.
@LibisFish It doesn't take a rich person to properly care for their pets; it takes a responsible person. If you can't afford properly sized housing, buying the animal in the first place defies logic.
I am not an "elitist;" I am just a person who does not believe in animal abuse; but it's okay, you are entitled to your ignorance. Too bad your fish have to suffer from it.
@drgnfrc13 Also, I always felt that they cell systems were a way to spread disease too quickly through the fishroom and did not allow each fish enough room to exercise.
@LibisFish And yes, I am aware that bettas are labrynth fish. However, that does not change the fact that they are affected by ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, just like any other fish. Dangerous levels of these coumpounds can easily accumulate in a single day in such a small volume of water, let alone an entire week. The only way I could see such a setup actually working would be with some sort of miniature drip system (ie more work than it's worth).
OMG!! i hav the exact same tank and those exact same ornamesnts: the plastic plant and the diver helmet! and i used to hav a betta just like that in it! but it died and im getting another on monday (hopefully)

@LibisFish Or I guess you could set up a DIY sump larger than the tank itself and fill it up with plants, but that would be a rather eccentric setup.
drgnfrc13 5 months ago
It's way too small, though. A betta really should have at least a gallon.
