Yup, this bit's a pain in the head to learn! It's a great coordination exercise because there's 2 rhythms played at the same time with the same hand. It would've been nice to have multiple camera angles (including close-up shots) but this seemed like the best camera position to capture everything with only 1 camera.
But keep practicing it, and remember to LISTEN to what notes are being played as well as watching them. Keep going over the parts that break the rhythms down...and never give up!
it would make it tons easier if you made a video close up of the right hand reeeaaallly slow lol im having problams getting it down and i know you hav to try do it slowly and stuff also thanks for these vids they make learning easier than normal
@linayamada98 Yeah it is pretty tricky at first. Takes a while to get used to, so make sure to practice a lot and break it down and take it slowly. Just practice the rhythm of the vocal melody if you're having trouble and then go ahead and try to add in the rest afterwards.
@vanjaisadrumer Sure. In fact, it's a good idea to do that when you're first learning the song and getting to grips with things. Make it as simple or as complex for your needs at your current ability level. A good way of simplifying things would be to just play the vocal line with your right hand and the low octaves with the left. Keeps things simple before putting everything in there.
@icantbreakfree Hey, no probs. Glad you enjoyed the lesson! Couldn't find Part 1? It's definitely up there somewhere. If you haven't found it already, head to my channel, and you'll find it under the "Everything Else" playlist on the right hand side (I think).
@Dadde493 This is one of the more difficult parts of the song in my opinion. To play everything individually is fairly straightforward, but mixing it all up with both hands going and at full speed can be a challenge.
1. Practice JUST the top melody (the line Corey sings) with the right hand. Spend enough time doing this at whatever speed feels comfortable so that you barely have to think about it to play it. You're ideally aiming to be able to play this without looking at the keys...
@Dadde493 ...or really concentrating. TIP: I suggest keeping the little finger on the 'A' note at the beginning of the melodies, and then let the rest of the fingers find their position on the rest of the keys. You will need this hand position for the accompaniment anyway.
2. The melody and the accompaniment is usually played all with the right hand. But separate this to make things simpler. So move the F# and C# notes down an octave and play it with the left hand and mix it in with the right..
@Dadde493 hand to help you get the coordination down and imprint this in your muscle memory. This is essential so that your ears and your fingers can hear and feel where each note should be placed in relation to the others, and so you can understand where each note fits before or after the other. So...right hand = melody, left hand = 8th notes accompaniment 1 octave lower, and play these together. This is the HARDEST bit of these sections of the songs, so it WILL be difficult initially...
@Dadde493 Don't worry about moving on or doing anything else until you've figured out how this sounds and feels. You ultimately need to be playing the melody and 8th note accompaniment with just the right hand, but we're splitting things out in order to simplify and understand. Do this for 2 months if you have to, just make sure that you play clean and rhythmically tight, otherwise the structure of the song falls to bits.
3. Now we need to get things going with JUST the right hand...
@Dadde493 So you need to rely on your ears for this. If you can get the coordination necessary when it's split between both hands, you CAN achieve this with just one. You just have to remember what the melody sounds like with the accompaniment played underneath it, however this time it's going to be an octave higher (where it should be). If you get stuck, go back and play it with the left hand again to remind yourself where the notes fit in and how it should sound. Don't worry if this takes...
4. When (not if), you're ok with all this, you need to add the bass line with the left hand. This should be pretty easy for you if you're comfortable doing the rest with the right hand. It's just simple octaves and it makes the entire passage growl and sound a lot more intense.
Really, the best tool for you is to practice all this steadily and try not to become frustrated that it isn't happening overnight. It took me quite a while to master this...
@Dadde493 ...and I've been playing for years. I (or any other teacher) can only do so much for your technique and ability. I like to help as much as possible but the best help you'll get is from yourself. Sounds harsh but TRUST ME on this. I only know because I've spent countless hours and days sitting at my piano or behind my drum kit trying to nail whatever I'm learning...and the best part? I STILL DO! We all do.
Best of luck with it and be sure to let me know how you get on!
@Zer0MT Thanks that was just what I needed and you know what? I almost figured it out while listening to the song (sorry but my English is rubbish cause I'm Swedish) but it's just to try and try and try and then my band maybe could record it and put it on our band's channel! THANK YOU A LOT!!! :D :D :D
@Dadde493 Your English is great, don't worry about that.
And you're welcome, glad I could help you out. Yeah, it is a case of just playing and playing and playing. And if that fails...play some more! And obviously going back and following the lessons through again should help somewhat to give you a guide to follow as you're learning, which is why I made these.
@TheJennyMollyShow Yeah still really pleased about that, just like all my videos that have more likes than dislikes. The dislikes never bother me of course but it's nice to know your work is appreciated =)
You are my God!!It's pretty awesome but I have a problem adjusting the vocal notes into the piece. And the combination is pretty tough.I know exercise can make you better but I've tried really hard so far and I still get confused :/ any advice?
I understand, this is a tricky part. Here's my advice: simplify it & slow it down. Completely forget the left hand for now. Play the melody (A notes, etc) with the right hand and the alternating F# and C# with the left hand. The vocal melody for the most part alternates with the accompanying F# & C#, so bear that in mind and it should help you out. Watch the video again and just concentrate on the right hand, but use both hands for it and it should be easier.
@J0K3R1n4 ...and then you should find that after a while you'll start to find your 'groove' with this rhythm, at which point you will have a clearer understanding of what you need to be doing. Then try it with just one hand doing the melody and accompaniment (still without worrying about the left hand) and only when you're comfortable with it, add the left hand in. But the most important thing is breaking it down to make it easier at first and build from there. Let me know how that goes!
@J0K3R1n4 Here to help! It's hard to explain some things when you're not in person with somebody and not in front of the keyboard. But hopefully my roundabout explanations help a little bit ;)
A very useful tutorial, thank you for your time. The only thing I didn't like is that I think you don't explain the singing part very clean. Maybe try to do the singing and rest together but slower, for us that have problems with rhythm? :)
@Migty Firstly, thanks for your comment and praise. Very good to know the video's been of some help.
Also, thanks for keeping the criticism constructive. Fair point, I hear what you're saying. Now that I'm aware of this, I'll be sure to address it in one of the later videos. We'll be coming back to the same vocal melody later in the song, so I'll make sure to go into a little more detail and slow everything down further. Cheers!
@moniquecronin Thanks so much for the kind words. Don't worry, parts 3 & 4 will be completed soon. I doubt they will take us to the end of the song, as I might need more time to explain everything (especially with some trickier chords coming up in the accompaniment sections), but either way, it's all in the pipeline.
Thanks for posting, and I'm happy to hear you're enjoying the videos and learning from them.
@BIGZoMim Thanks. So are these actually helping you and useful? I was wondering if they're clear and concise enough? Too difficult to learn from? Let me know...
@Zer0MT no i think this is probably the clearest tutorial ive found so far of any song on youtube. i guess thats why im watching this one! very easy to learn from, for me i guess.
