You buy the software = you support the company and allow them to recover part of the money spent for making said software + other things.It can be movies,It can be music,it can be games,etc.

You get a pirated vesion = you didn't buy it,you probably acquired it through another person or website who have anything to do with the company.You support said person instead of the company

If it was a bad game though, the person who made the game, will owe him for throwing dirt in his face, (if it wasn’t their own fault) for making the game seem like something it wasn’t. (or indirectly forcing them to buy it)
