@Frentzen127 no that definetly isn't the HANS System.It's a part of the Car which they can pull of when leaving/entering the car.This is a part of the sideimpact protection to avoid contact with Obstacles that will hit the helmet from left or right.The announcers did t get that wrong as well.

Wasn't HANS. Believe it or not this was actually right at the beginning of HANS, and if memory serves HANS wasn't mandatory at the time and he wasn't wearing a HANS device, but the next race everyone was wearing one.

That's not a HANS device flying out. It's the cockpit head surround. This piece was placed inside the cockpit around the driver's head after the driver was seated in the car.

You can see a part of the hans device flying away on the left side of the car at 0:04 . He was very lucky indeed.

@YourPlanB There was no HANS in 2001 CART, they only used it in ovals but not on normal circuits like Laguna Seca. Besides, the HANS device was never that big in size.
