"Luke was a historian. He was a historican of the book of Acts so he would have been writing down what happened as it happened or just shortly thereafter"
Now THAT is what I call an inept argument. 1) Luke accurately listing cities, towns and official titles makes him a travel guide, not an historian. 2) The claim what he wrote was "shortly thereafter" based on Luke being "a historian" is ludicrous. Your assumptions are unsubstantiated and thus your argument fails.
@Pilgrim1411 "Scholars are agreed that Luke was a first-rate historian."
Uh, no....The original claim "first-rate historian" came from Sir William Ramsey, in the 19th century (I have about a dozen of his books) and otheres simply repeat that one claim.
The claim "Luke made no mistakes in Acts" is based soley on the fact that the author of Acts was able to name various locations and official titles correctly. At best, that makes him a good travel guide NOT a good historian.
@Pilgrim1411 "Contact me for an extensive bibliography."
If you have any that base their claim Luke was a "first-rate historian" on anything *other* than simply mentioning various locations and titles correctly, then do send it to me.
@Pilgrim1411 Do provide a list of *historians* who support the claim "Luke was a first-rate historian" and not simply apologists like Norman Geisler in "When Critics Ask". One thing you fail to understand is that non-believers tend to be people who have investigated BOTH sides of the issue, so we have read people like Habermas, Geisler, etc. I believe Geisler's claims about Luke as much as I do his claims that UFOs are sent by Satan. Do YOU believe UFOs are sent by Satan?
All one need do is google bible or biblical inconsistencies, & they will find various lists of thousands, one of which is the two creation stories, one of which says he creates the heavens & the earth & all that's upon it, than the light, & in the other, he creates the light first. Did God create the Universe twice & in two different ways?
Jesus' immaculate birth isn't the only or first one in human history, Greek, Roman, Asian, Native American, African, & just about any other cultural story you can think of has stories of either Gods coming down to earth & making hanky panky with the humans, or someone suddenly being pregers. Theologians have verified that the bible was written over many centuries by many authors. That & the fact many books have been left out, & the order has been changed makes is validity suspect.
what the fuck has happened to the schooling system that people this dumb aren't still in Kindergarten>?
You can't assert from a negative. If the record on Paul's death wasn't included in part or parts of the bible, that can't be used as evidence for anything, until you can refute all other possible explanation for it's absence.
Historically, Jesus took his story from other mythical heroes including Dionysus and Horus. Which makes any "Historical evidence" found in any of these books complete malarky.
@Solidsnaik , That view is not supported by the vast majority of scholars today. The pagan-parallel thesis has been thoroughly refuted. Read THE GOSPEL AND THE GREEKS, by Nash; and THE RIDDLE OF RESURRECTION, by Mettinger (of Sweden).
Name three All of the refutations based their claims on the fact that the pagan myths are not identical with the gospels, whihc is an extremely weak argument. All one has to do is look at the Chronicles of Narnia to see something that has some with huge differences but was actually based on the Jesus myth.
@jimmo42, About 100% of critical scholars in the world today accept the life, death and burial of Jesus Christ. Sources provided in THE HISTORICAL JESUS, by Habermas. Even the liberal Jesus Seminar accepts this. Three? Habermas, Crossan, Borg. Jesus is history no myth. Read MYTH BECAME FACT, by Lewis. Read works by credentialed scholars. The genre of myth is different than the gospels.
I've read a couple of things by Gary Habermas, watched videos, etc. Typical apologetic drivel. Habermas is a con man. He stars off with the claim of his "minimal facts" which are allegedly supported by 75% of scholars, without telling you what these facts are. He then adds more details giving you the impression that these are also supported by the majority of scholars. Not a very honest method.
@Pilgrim1411 "The genre of myth is different than the gospels."
And what is your evidence for that? Do tell us! Perhaps the unsubstantiated claim that "there was not enough to create a myth"??? Well, let's call it a legend, then. Regardless of what word you use, there was plenty of time for stories of an iternant preacher to be embellished to the point of complete fiction. There are a number of modern stories that reached that point within years, if not quicker.
@Pilgrim1411 "Even the liberal Jesus Seminar accepts this"
All that says is there was an itinerant preacher who was executed for sedition. This makes the stories in the Gospels just as historical valid as Homer's Illiad or Ben Hur.
BTW, Jesus was a liberal so please do stop using it a a pejorative.
Interesting that you mention Lewis' essay. First he was NOT an historian or "credentialed scholars", but a novelist. Second, the Narnia series is a good example of how you can take an existing story (e.g. death and resurrection of Jesus) and twist it into a different story , while keeping core elements. It simply helps to support the claim that the Jesus story was based on pagan myths.
@Solidsnaik, Lies. Contemporary scholars reject that idea. Read THE GOSPEL AND THE GREEKS by Nash. Jesus is no myth. Even liberal scholars accept he lived, died and was buried. Read THE HISTORICAL JESUS, by Habermas.
A creationist citing evidence, wtf.
