That was part of the appeal of Seinfeld at the time, the chance of anything happening to them at any time. But for myself I found my favourite episodes were those like The Dinner Party and The Chinese Restaurant, which had basically none of those extremes. And The Outing. They lent on those extremes too often. The genius of this kind of story is the probability that it COULD happen, not COULDN'T. Hitting the golf ball into the whale's blowhole was the most they pushed that without going too far.
I like the way they drop all the really unreal stuff in Seinfeld on this show. There was so much bizarreness and unreality on Seinfeld that it got unrelatable pretty often. Like they had to throw in a gross improbability or three in every episode or it wouldn't have any interest value to an audience. That's what made The Chinese Restaurant episode such a stand-out - they didn't use any of those "novel and improbable!" crutches. There were just too many of them for four normal people.
I find a lot of Seinfeld elements in the episodes to be that way: unreal and unbelievable. What's pretentious about having that sincere opinion and expressing it?
I agree avidalocan, Larry refined his humour I think. Seinfeld was great, but the writing was all over the place at times. Sometimes they relied on the mere wacky factor of a story. All the characters were complete lunatics at some point, whilst the others react with "what the hell is wrong with you", the roles always changed. The characters were hectic. CYE is easier to swallow, less surreal. You can always relate to all the characters including Larry.
Actually in the early seasons of Seinfeld, it tended to be more realistic. It was in the later years that they got really wacky. But I know what you mean.

That was part of the appeal of Seinfeld at the time, the chance of anything happening to them at any time. But for myself I found my favourite episodes were those like The Dinner Party and The Chinese Restaurant, which had basically none of those extremes. And The Outing. They lent on those extremes too often. The genius of this kind of story is the probability that it COULD happen, not COULDN'T. Hitting the golf ball into the whale's blowhole was the most they pushed that without going too far.

I like the way they drop all the really unreal stuff in Seinfeld on this show. There was so much bizarreness and unreality on Seinfeld that it got unrelatable pretty often. Like they had to throw in a gross improbability or three in every episode or it wouldn't have any interest value to an audience. That's what made The Chinese Restaurant episode such a stand-out - they didn't use any of those "novel and improbable!" crutches. There were just too many of them for four normal people.

I find a lot of Seinfeld elements in the episodes to be that way: unreal and unbelievable. What's pretentious about having that sincere opinion and expressing it?

I agree avidalocan, Larry refined his humour I think. Seinfeld was great, but the writing was all over the place at times. Sometimes they relied on the mere wacky factor of a story. All the characters were complete lunatics at some point, whilst the others react with "what the hell is wrong with you", the roles always changed. The characters were hectic. CYE is easier to swallow, less surreal. You can always relate to all the characters including Larry.

Actually in the early seasons of Seinfeld, it tended to be more realistic. It was in the later years that they got really wacky. But I know what you mean.
