@Bla31n Rome attacked Syracuse during the Second Punic War. Archimedes' military inventions helped hold off the might of Rome for 2 years or so. After the Romans finally broke into the city, a Roman soldier killed Archimedes according to historical accounts. The Roman military leaders were hoping to capture him alive to gain access to his talents. Archimedes was deeply concerned with advancing mathematical knowledge, and he used methods very similar to those employed now in calculus.
