i allways think it´s strange if you buy a 50k sound making device but you havent got a soundcard to record so it ends up sounding like you tapping with youre fingers on the built in microphone on the computer..
you modularguys so horny on a new module.. do you eavern have cloth on your bodys:)?
Some interesting comments here. This whole genre does suffer from an image problem. Partly the technical medium (youtube through someones crappy pc speakers is hardly going to convey the full sound being produced!). Partly the content - please, as a fan of alternative music styles and instruments, play some music! You are going to gain much more traction and recognition for what you do if you make it more accessible
Yeah, looks like most videos of modular monster synths on the tube have pretty poor music to bleepy-noise ratio. Maybe fiddling with all these cables lefts little time to actually make some music :)
These type of synths are made mostly for University/Hobbyist/Collectors. They sound and looks absolutely stunning, but they are not very versatile when it comes to switching presets, as there are none, hence limiting its live/studio production use.
I disagree strongly - these type of instruments require a different approach its true, but thats the beauty of them. Obviously if you want a piano sound in the verse and a string pad in the chorus then you wouldn't choose a modular synthesizer. But these instruments make beautiful music - and its an area which is developing all the time. Exciting times to come, I'm sure.
fair enough - but to say they are made for university/hobbyist/collectors implies they are not intended for serious music creation. They are in fact made for anyone who is serious about making music with synthesizers.
I know there are no rules to creating music, no matter what the instrument. But to drag this colossus on stage making the switch of 250 patch chords between every song you use it for is not very effective. I know you can get some SICK sounds out of these machines ,but most mucisians wants to ceate music there and then, and not experiment how to by turning a 100 knobs.
Not all music is created on stage, and not all people who create music have an impatient audience waiting to be entertained. Taking ones time to craft new an unknown sounds with electronic instruments can be very satisfying some, me included.
That said, I find a can create a really cool dance style patch on my modular faster than I can program my midi drum machine, and with cooler and more musical results.
Couple of points here worth mentioning. 1) A modular synthesizer is infintely expandable and so ascribing a sound to it is unlikely. If you want to make piano sounds or pads, go for it.
a 'musician' is someone who focuses their life on music.. if instrumentalist musicians were short-tempered they wouldnt learn to play a tambourine well either... all instruments take time..
furthermore, not all musicians want to be stage-performers.. some prefer to just play with sounds in their room, or are more happy in a studio making/recording/producing...
tapping my door sounds better

Yes, this is true. I know they have no presets! Just a large electronic "playground" I guess.

Well for those musicians there's always the tambourine, or possibly the washboard - i'm joking man, you're absolutely right
fishybishbash 2 years ago
washboard lol

Well, it's clear that you're not a musician, then.
